The one "in the middle" you mentioned is called "Satan Met A Lady" from 1936 starring the great Bette Davis. I happen to own it but I've got to say it's one of those thirties melodramas Warner Bros. churned out in high volume.

Knowing the Coens, 1) I don't believe that for a second; and 2) maybe they should've, then their remake might have actually been good.

Agreed! The remake is really not that amazing. Sure John Wayne was not the greatest actor that ever was but he was Rooster Cogburn and having anyone else trying to reprise the role was just not a good idea. Certain characters like that in movie history are just owned by the original actor and when someone else want's to revive them is a big mistake

It's another situation like Following. It's been a long time coming, but due most likely to Cuaron's schedule it has been pushed back several times. It was hinted at in at least 2 New Years drawings over the past 3 years.

You can pick up Warner Archive titles cheaper at ImportCDs and Deep Discount. Also WBShop does present opportunities from time to time to get it cheaper than this $18.95 price, too.
Thanks. ImportCds had the best price. There in California and I'm in Oregon, so I'm hoping for fast shipping.

Even though I said I wasn't going to spend anymore on Blus until I finished the big batch I just bought, I had to splurge on Quadrophenia. It is one of my favorite movies ever so, even though I already own the UK disc, I need the exclusive Criterion extras (the improved picture and sound won't hurt either)!

That could be rule number one in a list of criteria to consider when contemplating a remake (or a reinterpretation). In the same sense Vivien Leigh is Scarlett O'Hara, Greg Peck is Atticus Finch, and Tony Perkins is Norman Bates. James Arness as The Thing, on the other hand, probably not so much.

But True Grit was based on a book... and from what I remember reading at the time the Coen Brothers film came out, that was what had inspired them to make a movie. They wanted to do an adaption of the book (which they loved) and they did not set out to make a remake of the earlier film.

I wonder if WKW would still be interested in making The Lady From Shanghai now? Goodness knows Nicole Kidman's career has changed a great deal in the proceeding years.
Days of Being Wild has the worst English subtitles I have ever seen on an official Blu-ray release. I know it's an import, and that it was probably not done with English speakers in mind the same way... but it is really a bad translation. It should be re-released by Criterion or Kino on Blu-ray.

A few relatively minor errors exist on the "As Tears Go By" Blu-ray from HK but it's barely noticeable or distracting. It's worthwhile as a purchase. That Blu-ray only had a few translation hiccups and it was barely an issue.

Yeah, I love The American. Two really good performances from Clooney.
Both The American and Solaris are slick and stylish films that never lose sight of drama, whilst satisfying genre expectations.

Whoa!
I disagree! A fantastic film that grows on you with repeated viewings.
I'm a fan of John Wayne, but I much prefer Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn.
Although, I'm sure you're right about the Coens and they have seen the first version of True Grit.

Yeah, Days of Being Wild has dreadful subtitles. I'll definitely get it again if produced by Criterion, Kino or even one of the UK producers, like Artificial Eye or Studio Canal.

Everyone loved it.
Seeing it all in one day is amazing. Highly recommended.
Wow that is so awesome that you had people over and watched Fanny and Alexander over some coffee and what not. I virtually don't know a single person that I am acquainted with that would be up for doing something that.

Yeah we all know the Coens saw John Wayne's True Grit. They aren't fooling anybody I still need to see this Coen version, I have had the blu-ray since July and still have yet to watch it. Should probably get on that.

Agreed, however I'd watch a Gone With the Wind remake, especially if it was done like a mini-series on HBO or something. Which is how I predicted movies would go a few years back. TV, the cinema's bastard step child, is now the more creative of the two, and offers up way more freedom and originality these days.

With all the praise Purple Noon is getting I will have to consider a pick up. My list is so long already...guess that's what B&N sales are for.

I've also organised some of the same guys, plus Mrs Drbikeshorts, to see The Master in 70mm at The Astor Theatre in Melbourne tomorrow afternoon.
A couple of us already saw it in 70mm at the same theatre, with an introduction and a follow up Q&A with P.T. Anderson. Fantastic experience.
The film is a lot to take in, so I've been looking forward to seeing it again
Just so I'm still on topic: it would be great if Criterion releases it on blu-ray

Blasphemy sir!! Unthinkable! even if it were eventually to be a Criterion release (to stay on topic). But I must agree there's some really stunning productions coming out of the cable network system these days.

Yes, and hopefully one of them is the show I'm currently developing and wrote the pilot for, LOL.
