Saw both True Grit movies (in order and not too far apart) and I was struck by how the later one was close to the orginal, in terms of story, even scene sequence. It's hard to believe that the Coens never saw the original, because it's unlikely that two filmmakers would adapt a book so similarly. The later one is "grittier" in at least one sense: you see how the snakebite affected the girl's life.

Jeff Bridges isn't John Wayne, but he did a good job of being a cantankerous old guy. I thought both were "good," and there are differences, but do still consider the later one to be a remake.

I'll spare you by not going on-topic. Do you really want to hear about another problem I've found with a Criterion release?

I'm a fan of John Wayne, but I much prefer Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn.
Although, I'm sure you're right about the Coens and they have seen the first version of True Grit.
Agreed.

I'm guessing not. The latest news on Paramount's legal battle with IMF (that I could find) from April:

The studio has been unsuccessful in scoring a quick win in claiming exclusive rights to Federico Fellini's classic La Dolce Vita

Hey guys. Having a problem with my Videodrome disk here. Its brand new, but it won't play on my Panasonic DMP-60. I have a ton of other criterion-releases, and they all play just perfect. This is the first time my player won't read a disk.

Has there been any trouble with this particular release?

Yes, I have the latest firmware.

That's one of my all time favourite discs now. The soundtrack is stunning, the 5.1 remix sounds fantastic.

Can't wait for Monday announcements. Will we ever get some Carl Th. Dreyer on BD?

I'm going to make a wild guess and say The Passion of Joan of Arc will be a BD upgrade.

It's been restored by Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation, so, I think, an Italian blu-ray will be released next year. But, if we go by The Leopard blu-ray they released, it will be region locked and only have Italian subs

There's already a Japanese Blu-Ray that utilises the Film Foundation restoration

Maybe I will have my Italian down by then. I have been teaching myself for the past couple of months but just when I think it is coming along I try watching an Italian film with the subs off and I can only make out a few words here and there. Making sentences yourself comes a lot quicker than making out a conversation I have come to realize, you really have to develop an ear for the language(any new language). Hopefully I will get to that point.

I've looked into that and can only confirm that it is Italian audio w/Japanese subs. If anyone knows differently, please let us know.

Buono fortuna with that mi amico! I've been working on my pauvre francaise depuis trente ans and still can't follow a conversation with any degree of competence. Best advice? Get an Italian girlfriend! Preferably in Taormina. I was going to get a petit-amie to help me with my French but Mrs. ElliesDad wouldn't let me.

Isn't it supposed to come out next year in BD? Or maybe I'm thinking about The Hudsucker Proxy.

Universal have released Barton Fink in the UK (and other territories).
According to forum discussions on this site, there is some edge enhancement, but the grain structure is fine and hasn't been DNR'd to death (see The Big Lebowski).
I'll probably pick up the US edition when it becomes available.
I find it incredibly sad that a film from acclaimed filmmakers and the winner of top awards at Cannes could be treated so shabbily.

I'd just go ahead and get the Warner Archive DVD - I can't recall any of those titles being upped to blu thus far, and they certainly are not priorities for Warner's to do such.

You can pick up Warner Archive titles cheaper at ImportCDs and Deep Discount. Also WBShop does present opportunities from time to time to get it cheaper than this $18.95 price, too.
Well, with the Warner Archive starting to do Blu-Rays as well, it's possible that we'll see Barcelona get released on Blu that way...

The Hudsucker Proxy is confirmed as an upcoming Warner Archive Blu-Ray. I haven't heard anything about Barton Fink. I'm pretty sure Fox has the rights to it in the US, which makes it more saddening that they didn't include it in their Coen Brothers box set...

I take a look at my poor quality/supplements-free copy of Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and still CAN'T believe no one is interested. I asked Criterion about three months ago about this and they answered that there were no plans to release it in the future. How can a Palme d'Or winner, which came out in 2007, and that remains the centerpiece of one of the most important film movements of the decade (The Romanian New Wave), be treated so poorly ?

The new teaser for Almodovar's next film, Los Amantes Pasajeros (I'm so Excited!). Laughed so hard, I know someone who will be drooling all over this .
