The new teaser for Almodovar's next film, Los Amantes Pasajeros (I'm so Excited!). Laughed so hard, I know someone who will be drooling all over this .
[Show spoiler]

Part of me is so excited, and part of me is sad this won't be out in the US for another year... but mostly excited. Very excited.

Who knows, Almodovar is deciding between going to competition in Cannes or releasing it before. He is planning on releasing it in March for Spain if he decides for the later route (Which is the most probable, according to him). This seems like a really singular project from him. It looks like it is his own way of taking all the dramatic plots from his previous films out of his system. If he decides for an earlier release than I am sure the wait shouldn't be all that long .

Carlotta are definitely bringing the new resto for Elio Petri's The Assassin to Blu-ray (Street date is March 6th). There has never been a good English-friendly release of it. The film was recently restored and screened in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival. A colleague claims it looked phenomenal. Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Micheline Presle and Cristina Gaioni. This would be a great choice for Criterion!

And we could have a nice release of Alberto Lattuada's Mafioso.

Rounding up a pure Italian week would be Mario Monicelli's La Grande Guerra a.k.a. The Great War. It is so sad to see that no U.S. distributor ever bothered to put out a respectable release. Maybe the rumored Teorema will finally come out this year. It is also so frustrating not to have anything substantial with Silvana Mangano on Blu-ray. Bitter Rice is still missing.

L' Assassin Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

This site's announcement mentions that initial March release (then November for the US)..either way, it sounds about right for the US, going by the last couple films...and yup, it's definitely looking to be more in line with the earlier films than the latest, which I'm really looking forward to .

Interesting info regarding "Mafioso"! Great film on so many levels~ wry humor, wonderful scenes of family and village life and the Sicilian countryside, a dramatic change of tempo mid-way through, and some very dark drama, accentuated by a great turn by Alberto Sordo. Would up-grade for sure although it's hard to see that the pq could be much improved from the previous release.

With the focus on Italy, still aching for a Criterion release of "Nights of "Cabiria"...

What is all this talk about Barton Fink? I own the international Universal version, but wouldn't hesitate for a second about upgrading should Criterion release it. And doesn't Fox own the rights for it in the U.S.? Plus is it true that Fox have lost the film print of the movie?

I would be very excited for the extras on a Criterion release since there are no extras other than deleted scenes and trailer on any DVD editions other than the French special edition that has documentaries, in french only.

I started my Criterion with Rosemary's Baby and The Killing and both were splendid movies. I was very amazed by the PQ of The Killing!! Such clarity for an old movie. This will probably sound very stupid, but any chance Criterion releasing 2001, or A Clockwork Orange??

0%. Warner Bros. will release those titles about 30x each on blu-ray. Each release will have different packaging and/or cover art.

Would Brazil be a good blind-buy if I am a fan of Gilliam's other films? (Twelve Monkeys, Fear & Loathing).

If you are a fan of his other films, then yes. Brazil is probably his best known film.

If you're interested in any of sets, costumes, makeup, props and cinemaphotography, yes.

Appreciate the feedback, will more than likely pick up a copy when the price dips down again.

Do you think the prices will go up tonight? I see some off them are already back up. Might have to make one last purchase.

Hey guys. Having a problem with my Videodrome disk here. Its brand new, but it won't play on my Panasonic DMP-60. I have a ton of other criterion-releases, and they all play just perfect. This is the first time my player won't read a disk.

Has there been any trouble with this particular release?

Yes, I have the latest firmware.

As repeated ad nauseam, age has nothing to do with clarity. Film is film, lenses are lenses. I'm not sure how and why this perception came into being, but I figured it'd pretty much been squashed by now.

Glad you enjoyed them though. And no on 2001 or Clockwork.

I'm close to ordering Letter Never Sent or maybe Three Outlaw Samurai.. The first one sounds a little bit more appealing to me.

Would you consider it fairly safe as a blind-buy or is it a love it or hate it kind of film?

It's a beautiful, beautiful film. I just finished watching mine for the first time the other night and adored it. For $15 each on Amazon however, I'd definitely recommend getting both.
