Glad you enjoyed them though. And no on 2001 or Clockwork.
Well, given its low budget and initial poor performance at box offices, I would've thought it would get less treatment in terms of storage. My comment regarding its clarity is how Criterion restored it so well that modern audience can enjoy. If film is film, why do some blu rays get poor pq ratings? One would argue studios poor job at digitally restoring the film. My praise was directed to Criterion's fantastic job, not to movies that came out in the 50's.

Question Tomorrow's Announcements

Has anybody heard any rumors regarding tomorrow's CC announcement?
Has CC posted any recent clues?

Having seen Lonesome two weeks ago, I just saw King Vidor's 'The Crowd' & a genuine masterpiece it is. It shares many of the themes of Lonesome: Love in the big city, the struggle to assert oneself amongst the crowds, and then some. Much of the first act is similar: our lonely protagonist, the all American Johnny, falls in love with a girl at Coney Island. What follows is a painstaking story about the myth of the American Dream and a couple fighting the prevailing winds. The film also contains some of the great busy metropolitan shots and inventive special effects only to be matched Tati's great 'Playtime'.

Add this one to my list of CC wants.

Unfortunately, The Crowd happens to be a Warner's title so there goes Criterion's chances.

On the other hand Warner's is releasing Vidor's other big silent, The Big Parade, on blu next year so this shouldn't be too far off. Hopefully, I should add - The Crowd wasn't even released on DVD!

This sounds interesting. I bet that there will be another 50% off sale on their part!

I think he is talking about their monthly announcements which happen every 15th or the next Monday if it falls on weekend (Like it did this time). I don't think there is any kind of hint or heavy rumor at the time. I wish to be surprised (I really, really hope so !) but they have one of the toughest acts to follow after Eureka unleashed the "Slate of the Year" last Tuesday .

Criterion doesn't "restore" films though. They do some digital cleanup and contrast manipulation, but that's about it. Granted, they almost always give a great presentation - Children of Paradise nonwithstanding, but they were only using the masters provided to them.

Film IS film. Some titles get poor PQ because of using dated masters, or overuse of digital manipulations. But unless a film is shot, say, with soft filters, regardless of how the negative is stored (see Jaws, etc), it will have clarity if given a proper scan.

Thank you. I tried ordering both of them, but Three Outlaw Samurai is apparently shipped by another company that won't ship to Denmark. I guess it is settled then

I've only seen Letter Never Sent and I enjoyed it. Did not love it. It's visually stunning but I wouldn't recommend it as a safe blind-buy(does such a thing even exist?).

Nah you're probably right. I ended up ordering it anyway though. Very interested in it and it was cheap.

I'm thinking about picking up at least Broadcast News. I might order a DVD too but I'll wait until they've announced the March titles so that I don't have to double dip later.

That's not true. Different film stocks and lenses have different qualities, and image quality is also dependent on how a film was photographed and processed, not to mention the condition of the original elements after several decades. Many film stocks from the 70s were prone to color fading.

This makes me excited about today's announcement. From Criterion's Twitter:

"We’ll be announcing our new releases for March later on today... It’s a big one."

Also, David Ehrlich, who writes the Criterion Corner blog, visited the Criterion offices last week and tweeted this:

"Just left the Criterion offices... tried to contain my haywire nerdiness. All I can say is that 2013 is going to be *very* good to us"

I wonder if this "big one" is a title we were already aware of ? Or a total surprise?

I wonder if they mean "big one" as in the whole month...or just one big title. I'm going to guess the whole month.

On another note, does anyone know how to change usernames?
