then more than likely the TV version will be a 1080i Upconvert (much like Brazil L.C.A. version) I still love my MOC Steelbook

OH Well CG, I guess Christmas didn't come early for you....

I do wonder Joe, as the MOC version is very good. I assume Criterion will put in a similar effort. Even though its already out on BD, a reincarnation of Sid and Nancy would be great too.... A COX double bill...

I finally found a spare 4 hours to watch Heaven's Gate. All I'll say is I know a flawless masterpiece when I see one. I know this presentation is a bit different from the one critics saw in 1980, image and sound wise, but I don't think that can excuse the savaging it got. What a crime this film has been maligned for so long.

So much for what I said yesterday about not updating my Akira Kurosawa DVDs to BD just yet.

Barnes & Noble emailed me a 30% off Members Coupon this morning, so I went there during lunch break and grabbed Seven Samurai.

Seven Samurai = $49.99
+ 40% Off All Blu-rays flash deal at B&N.
+ 30% Off Members Coupon
+ 10% Off Standard Member Discount
= $18 and change final price.

I did not want to turn that down. Of all my Kurosawa DVDs, Seven Samurai and Stray Dog are the ones that I revisit with the greatest frequency, so I'll let Seven Samurai be my token Kurosawa BD for a short while.

I would normally trade in my DVD edition of this, but I think that I'll use it to give to my brother as an extra Christmas gift. I'm looking forward to seeing how Seven Samurai on Blu-ray compares to the DVD.

I went to B&N in the first place to get the new Olive edition of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, since that's one of my favorite flicks and this is supposed to be the best transfer to date. The new coupon got me doing some math and sealed my decision to take advantage to buy both, though.

In my best police megaphone voice:
"The Great Owl... Step slowly away from the Blu-ray store rack. Wait until January before making any more purchases."

The idea of a Criterion edition of Repo Man puts a smile on my face in a big way. I love my existing DVD copy of that movie, and I even own the old CD soundtrack. I know that Criterion will knock this one thoroughly out of the park, though.

I love my hard plastic VHS copy. Must have seen that movie 10 times over the years.

It certainly couldn't best the MoC, unless Criterion added another film or something.

Good news for those who aren't all-region though, whoever you are. I jest.

Default Three Colors White disc has arrived

Just a quick Thanks You! to the people who helped me with info on trading my first printing of the Three Colors White disc for the 2nd printing. The 2nd printing arrived in the mail today.

We've been having a steady rain/snow mix with heavy winds all day today, so I was a little scared when I saw the soaking wet, soggy paper disc mailer from Criterion sitting in my mailbox. But after letting it dry a bit, I popped it into my bluray player and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks again!

EDIT: Just noticed that a $10 Criterion.com gift certificate was not included. But I suppose that's just gravy anyway, so all is okay. (Still, it would have been nice. )

I thought it was a hint towards Andy Warhol's Blue Movie, which meant a collection similar to Hollis Frampton's and Stan Brakhage. Nothing wrong with Repo Man, but would've preferred the Warhol films.

I also thought about this for a moment. I think we need at least one avant-garde release per year. Criterion should give us another one in 2013. Andy Warhol, Maya Deren, Michael Snow and many others can be made into releases. I would ask for worldwide avant-garde but I know that's asking too much of Criterion .

More Hitchcock, please!!

My most desired non-Hitchcock title would be Mikhail Kalatozov's The Red Tent (1969) with Peter Finch and Sean Connery. Filmed in 70mm and a Russian version that's 1/2 hour longer and reedited with a (mostly) different score.

What we need is a David Lynch Box Set with a bunch of his greatest work and Lynchianess:

I'm hoping someday, we have something like this:

Disc 1: Eraserhead
Disc 2: The Elephant Man
Disc 3: Blue Velvet
Disc 4: Wild At Heart
Disc 5: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Disc 6: Lost Highway
Disc 7: Mulholland Drive
Disc 8: Inland Empire
Disc 9: Shorts (The Alphabet / The Grandmother / The Amputee)
