I bought the DVD set of When Horror Came To Shochiku a couple of weeks before I bought my Blu-ray player, but I would have waited had it been released on Blu-ray as well. That's an awesome collection of sci-fi/horror flicks. They look amazing with the upconvert through my Blu-ray player, thankfully.
At the recent Wexler talk it was suggested that some movies released in the Eclipse series could see blu releases. I think the titles that were specifically mentioned or referenced were Les Miserables and The Jungle Book, and there is speculation that Daises might also get an upgrade.

While Les Miserables was specifically mentioned, Kim was very confused about The Jungle Book (which was in response to a question from twitter) so I doubt that's getting an upgrade.

The post above is the one I addressed, where you go on to speculate that Criterion's release of Rosemary's Baby has some mysterious issues that make it only "mostly faithful to the source". Then, later on, you went and edited your latest post. That speculation can not be an opinion.

Either way, seeing that you don't remember what you claim and knowing that you cannot possibly explain why Rosemary's Baby might be only "mostly faithful", it is time to move on.

Pro-B
I most certainly *can* express my reservations about Rosemary's Baby regarding its selection as Criterion's "Release of the Year", however minor they may be, and as already noted, they were just that. But why on earth would I *choose* to engage in such a conversation with someone who can't seem discuss any "difference of opinion" without resorting to personal insult, rude dismissal and even "stupid" name calling?

Give your head a shake. Life is too short.

Now, Bonjour Tristesse was mistakenly listed (that went to Twilight Time) so nothing is carved in stone but it does make a Criterion release seem a bit less likely.
Yes, but I haven't quite given up hope that Criterion could wrest it away from that awful company.

Default 2013 World Cinema Wishlist for Criterion Collection

Since members are posting their CC wishlists for Blu-ray (or upgrade to Blu-ray), I thought that I would post mine. However, in the spirit of Criterion Collection's commitment to world cinema, I am narrowing my list to the films of countries outside the USA.

My top ten, in no particular order:

The Night of Counting the Years(Shadi Abdelsalam- Egypt)
The Decalogue(Krzysztof Kieslowski- Poland)
Le Samurai(Jean-Pierre Melville- France)
The Sweet Hereafter(Atom Egoyan- Canada)
A Page of Madness(Teinosuke Kingasa- Japan)
Pather Panchali(Satyajit Ray- India)
Yellow Earth(Kaige Chen- China)
Los Olvidados(Luis Bunuel- Mexico)
Abraham's Valley(Manoel de Oliveira- Portugal)
Passport to Pimlico(Henry Cornelius- United Kingdom)

My upgrade wishlist:

Blast of Silence (very wishful thinking, I know)
Carnival of Souls (w/ all of the DVD extras)
Closely Watched Trains
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Divorce Italian Style
Elevator to the Gallows
(the only Malle I like)
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
The Fugitive Kind

The Killers (mainly the orig. '46)
Night on Earth
Pickup on South Street
Le Samourai
Seduced and Abandoned
The Shop on Main Street
Short Cuts

Stranger Than Paradise (w/Permanent Vacation)

I recently watched The Organizer and was blown away.

It makes me wish Divorce Italian Style and Seduced and Abandoned were planned for blu even more.

Closely Watched Trains and The Shop on Main Street should be serious considerations.

I'd like to see a Blu-ray release of The Naked Prey. I bought that Criterion DVD years back when I first started trail ultrarunning, and when I was researching persistence hunters in Africa to understand their techniques, so this movie has a fun personal significance to me. I mean, the "clay man" scene is still one of the most creepy and unsettling movie sequences that I have ever watched, and it's still intensely difficult to see, but the overall movie is spot-on amazing.

Since I have a 32'' 1080p HDTV and sit roughly eight feet away from it, my existing DVD collection looks just fine upconverted on the Blu-ray player, but there are still a good many Criterions that I will gladly upgrade when I get the chance.

Do you have to be a certain amount of feet away from your TV to see an upconvert ?

According to the HDTV chart that I've seen on several websites, I need to be four feet away from my 32'' television to ascertain the full benefit of the 1080p resolution.

I figure that there is room for subjectivity, though. After all, some people like to sit on the front row in a movie theater, some people prefer to sit in the middle section at the theater, and some people like to sit toward the back. I generally enjoy sitting in the middle-to-rear sections of theaters.

I bought a 32'' HDTV because it made the most sense in my living room as far as available space is concerned, and it's also a heck of a lot better than my previous TV, a 27'' tube television that I bought back in 2000, was. I probably could have got away with buying a 720p 32'' television, but I shelled out the extra $30 or so to buy a 1080p 32'' since I only use my television to watch movies.

Now, from my usual seating place of seven to eight feet away from my 32'' 1080p television, I have compared Blu-rays to the respective DVDs (by way of Blu-ray/DVD combo movies that I own), and I do notice an improvement when watching the Blu-ray. Casino Royale, for example, looks better on Blu-ray than on DVD from where I sit from the television. I admit, though, that the difference is negligible, and that a lot of what I notice may be self-serving "biased unreliable witness" perception.

Since I am new to owning an HDTV and Blu-ray player, I am still enjoying the novelty of seeing my existing DVDs at a far better resolution than I ever have before. I cannot readily tell if my Blu-ray player upconverts these DVDs in the best possible way or if I'm simply reaping the benefits of watching the DVDs on the HDTV as opposed to watching them on the old tube television. In a strict sense, though, the Blu-rays put so much more information into the screen space than a DVD will, but, in my particular situation, the world will not crumble to the ground if I continue to watch my existing DVDs instead of upgrading.

I did make a point to upgrade my absolute favorite Criterion movies (Melville's films, Seven Samurai, Solaris, the Malick films, Godzilla) to Blu-ray, but I can take my time with the others with no sense of rush.

I am glad that Criterion handles the matter in a classy way by charging the same price for Blu-ray that they do for the DVDs.

I also agree 100% with you that the Blu-rays are cooler in terms of sheer storage space.

I own a LOT of Criterion titles on DVD, though, and it's not economically feasible at this point to upgrade them all to Blu-ray. For the most part, I will simply wait until the movies that are not yet released on Blu-ray are released in that format, and/or take advantage of drastic sales prices (Barnes & Noble 50% off sales a couple times a year, and such) to figure out what else to buy.

Any Powell & Pressburger is worth a Blu upgrade. I'm really hoping Criterion gets back the StudioCanal-owned films (The Small Back Room, The Tales of Hoffmann, Powell's Peeping Tom) eventually since I don't see Lionsgate ever bothering with them. They've sat on Peeping Tom for years in the US, let alone a lesser known film like The Small Back Room. I'm not even hopeful the StudioCanal half of Hitchcock's silents would get a US release from Lionsgate.

The Pierre Etaix films that have been hinted at might be dropped into an Eclipse set. It seems reasonable to expect a second Czech New Wave Eclipse set as well. If they really can only release these on DVD it would be nice if they came in the old-school mega-DVD sets they used to release - a la the Antoine Doinel cycle or the von Sternberg set - rather than consigning them to extra-less, context-less Eclipse sets.

It seems there is a set released every two or three months, though much of that depends on what's available I guess.

And "Sisters of the Gion" which was included with "Osaka Elegy" on that AE Mizo boxset.

Excellent picks ! Los Olvidados, The Night of Counting the Years, A Page of Madness and Pather Panchali would make my year. I hope they get to the very much expected WCF titles, they shouldn't delay them any longer .

I don't really get why Criterion are (seemingly) going to release the WCF films in a boxset. The films don't have much relation to each other

I just wish they would them sooner rather then later, rather in a box set or not!

Is anyone surprised the alcoholic beverage of choice for those who frequent this thread is beer?

I think some people have the perception we sit around sipping wine through straws, nibbling on cheese while mispronouncing words like allegorical and didacticism.

I voted for wine btw
