As fo 2013 I'm hoping most for Eraserhead because it has been such a creative influence on my life and work recently, and I love the fact that D Lynch has never said much about the meaning of the film so I'd be interested to see what Criterion has to say.
Also, after seeing Guillermo Del Toro speak in person at Toronto's TIFF Lightbox in 2011, he hinted at a personal campaign of his to get L'arcano Incantatore on the collection. Del Toro screened the film that night and I was immediately sucked into the atmosphere of the beautiful calm italian countryside, making the haunting and supernatural moments all the more frightening. A proper transfer would look stunning and very filmic and "pure" in a 35mm grain/depth of field sort of way.
Since Del Toro's Cronos was released several years ago, logically, I'm hoping for a release of Devil's Backbone, which in my opinion is his greatest film to date... here's hoping Pacific Rim is even better!...oh god am I kidding.

Del Toro's DEVIL'S BACKBONE is coming from Criterion. I can't remember where, but they hinted as much.

I would absolutely *love* to see L'ARCANO INCANTATORE released, too. Such an atmospheric little story. It's my favorite movie by Pupi Avati. I even bought the Italian DVD (and found some fan-made subtitles for it). That and ZEDER. I know Avati's HOUSE WITH THE LAUGHING WINDOWS will be released on BD in the UK next year, but I far prefer those other two.

I am really envious that you got to watch INCANTATORE on the big screen. That most have been amazing.

I watched The Thin Red Line Blu a couple of weeks ago, I watched The Tree of Life last week, and I'll watch The New World soon. The New World is Malick's weakest movie in my opinion, but it is still a thousand times better that the best films by most directors. I have Badlands on the calendar and cannot wait.

I am also looking forward to the theatrical release of Malick's new film, To the Wonder, in a few months. My current favorite director with a film starring my current favorite actress (Olga Kurylenko), so I'm sure it will be a winner.
Hopefully To the Wonder gets a fairly wide release because my city only has a couple indies showing at any given time. I'm a huge Malick fan and Will be disappointed if I have to wait for the bluray.

I first watched Days of Heaven on TCM HD. I absoluely needed to have it on Blu ray afterwards, 1080i left much to be desired. Picked it up at Amazon's regular price and haven't regretted it since Have you seen the Thin Red Line Blu-ray yet? It will BLOW YOUR MIND!

Default criterion.com question

Is there such a thing as a "best time" to buy blurays from the criterion.com website? It looks like most of them are $8 to $10 lower than the list price right now. I'm just wondering if they ever go lower ... because I have a criterion gift certificate to use. Just wondering if I should hold out for a possibly better price.

The Criterion site has flash sales, I think they've had two of those this year, where titles are 50% off. But I don't think there is a set timetable for when they happen.

A couple times a year they mark them down 50%, I'd wait for that.

Ivan's Childhood on Blu-ray. I traded my DVD version in a couple weeks ago to make room for the Blu. I'll have some Best Buy Rewards Points coming my way from the purchase of the Blu-ray player/HDTV/various James Bond Blu-rays three weeks ago, so that'll cover most of it. I love that movie.

Regarding Picnic at Hanging Rock, are people hoping for a Criterion upgrade because they think it would better the BD release currently available in the UK and Australia, or because it would be a Region A release?

I have the current Blu-ray (released through Umbrella in Australia), and I'm generally quite happy with it, but I've never seen the Criterion DVD to have any sense of what a Criterion release might be like. Anyone care to share their thoughts on this?

If Criterion does do an HD release of Hanging Rock, I hope they include both cuts of the film. With all due respect to Peter Weir, I don't agree with all the cuts he made in revising the film, and feel some valuable moments got lost.

Love your avatar.

I had a time to view Les Visiteurs du Soir last evening. The beautiful production design was what originally attracted me to the film, along with its medieval setting. I'm not sure if it was because of my lack of expectation but I absolutely loved the film. Wonderful performances, compelling dialogue, masterful direction, and a heart warming tale (wink) whisked me away in a fashion that only cinema can. (for myself anyway)

Happy New Year to all by the way.

I liked it alot too. However, in regards to the fantasy elements, it would have been more fantastic if it was in, say, Jean Cocteau's hands.

Just a feeling, looking at what CC as been releasing mostly, no certainty of course we have no way of ever knowing what they will release on any coming months unless one of us here is cheating and is actually working for CC? Now that would be cool in a way if we could recruit one of them for this thread, might kill the suspense and make the "I wish for these" post a bit useless but still

I stop worried about Malick reviews a long time ago, he is just not for everyone and yet some people just keep on watching every movie he make's even if they already know they won't like it. I think some do it mostly so they can then b!tch that Malick as wasted another 3 hours of their precious life

I think its one of these two things

-most people don't have a region free option and as such a region A release is all they can hope for

-you also have "collectors" of Criterion and I am not using this in a bad way, they just prefer having the Criterion version over MoC of BFI or others.

How did the Blu-ray look? The price for it up here in Canada is $41 and that is a stiff price for one single movie, plus the question over if the image is nice or not as made me wait on getting it.
