I have the DVD box set, and it's one of my prized possessions, but Criterion could take it to the next level.

Hey...for those with access to NetFlix...there is a GREAT documentary by the BBC/BFI called "The Story of Film: An Odyssey" that was added recently. It's a (15) episode doc and is quite thorough. Worth a watch if you can. It's currently available on Amazon (DVD only- 5 DVDs) for $59.99
Watching this now on Netflix...very interesting...thanks for sharing Rich!!!

I rarely regret dropping streaming and going disc-only but this sounds pretty interesting. They don't even a have a place-holder entry for the discs though.

+1. I have the original laserdisc box set as well as the DVD box, and the Scorsese Man in the Shadows doc.

Problem is that not only do Warner have to license it to Criterion, for it to come out on Blu-ray it will be an expensive set, then with the production of extra materials it's hard to see how Criterion would make much money out of it. IMO Warner will do it themselves as a Halloween tie in eventually

Yep, because of documentaries like this and Hulu's Criterion section...I'm glad I never got rid of streaming..well worth it, especially in regards to any future Blu-ray purchasing!

Oh...forgot to mention that this is available via streaming. I dropped the disc rental option, so I don't know if you can rent the DVDs for this doc.

No discs atm and it doesn't look like that's changing anytime soon. Sometimes 'maybe someday' titles will be in the database and you can add them to the 'saved' section of your queue but there's absolutely no sign of this one.

Thanks for the heads up on the books James! I might consider those at some point. I've seen the first four episodes and am loving it! Trying not to watch too many at one time, so that I can savor it.

I'd like to buy the discs, when the price drops a bit...a shame that it's not available on blu-ray.

After finishing the first episode of The Story of Film: An Odyssey on Netflix, is there by chance any work being done for an upgrade to Benjamin Christensen's Haxan? Or would I be better off just purchasing the dvd?
I had the same thought as far as an upgrade for Vampyr, but I have a gut feeling that the dvd version of these fine films are about as good of a quality that we will ever get to enjoy. Thoughts and or opinions are kindly welcomed...thanks in advance!

I'm sure CC could eventually upgrade both of these titles. They are both running on their Hulu Plus channel now, so I guess hope springs eternal.

Eraserhead!? I finally break down and buy the Japanese import and now its going to get a criterion release..... Oh well, i'll happily double dip on that one

At least now maybe this means we'll eventually get a Mulholland Drive criterion release? since it seems like the Lynch vs criterion feud might finally be over? That would make 2013 the best year ever!

Yeah, it figures. It was just a few months ago I finally ordered the Australian region-free Blu-ray of ERASERHEAD that Umbrella Entertainment put out (although the boxcover says Region B, it plays just fine in a region A player), which really looks fantastic, but if there are enough good bonus features from Criterion I'll probably break down and get that one too.

Maybe that's the way to assure a Criterion release. Just buy the import version, and within a year or so Criterion will put it out (happened to me with BLACK NARCISSUS, and more recently SANSHO THE BAILIFF as well)!

Worst narrator ever, but such a great show. I started watching a few weeks ago but haven't gotten a chance to finish. Is there more than one season?

Sorry, Freaks is on the blindly-wishful Badlands "Guess It Every Time, Regardless of Logic" fan-nag list.
(Rather like the proliferation of "Uh, apartment building....'Bringing Out the Dead'!" guesses.)

A little farther down, but there. And it did seem a bit of a stretch.

I was using http://streamingcriterions.com/ to see what Criterions were streaming.

Apparently its not so up-to-date or reliable.

Pina and Kid With a Bike are not listed there, but have been streaming on Netflix for a bit now.
