Just watched Monsoon Wedding and Kicking and Screaming today. Enjoyed them both but Kicking and Screaming was definatly the better of the two. I thought it was hilarious, dont know why all the hate on it from the criterion forum.

Thought about it.
I'm too lazy/don't wanna spend the money now.

I'm not sure that it will be quite the same scenario.... the Third Man didn't have a two-month advance notice of OOP status. But, as it is CC, I'm sure that there would probably be healthy profit margins if someone were to sit on them for a while... I'm just glad to have mine, and that others have the opportunity to pick it up with the knowledge that its going OOP (avoiding scalper prices) I for one truly appreciate CC giving such an advance notice as this (I just hope they notify of all future OOP announcements in a similar manner)

I'm seriously considering picking up two or three copies.

As for Howards End - damn. I was hoping there was someone named Howard, and he got a violent but deserved "end.".
I rent Criterion movies through Netflix, to see if I'll like them (besides two blind buys, 8 1/2 and Paris, Texas) I didn't really care for A Christmas Tale. I didn't think it was bad, I just felt it was too long and the story not good enough to make up for it. I didn't care for that other IFC movie Gomorrah either, unlikeable characters, dull storyline. The only IFC movie I enjoyed was Che, but I don't see myself watching that again anytime soon.

I actually liked Howards End, but again, like the previous movies, not enough to actually own it. Needless to say, I won't be buying any of the titles I just mentioned.

I didn't care for Gomorrah at all. I watch a lot of films, but that one just bored me and I can sit and watch Playtime over and over.

The funny thing is that Amazon has been out for about a week or so now and their delivery date is almost 2 weeks from now. I got my copy coming from that wherehouse.com sale they had last week. Cost me $22, before shipping, but I definetly got one. Amazon had The Third Man on 2 week wait for a month or so and then all of a sudden, it was discontinued. The same may happen with Pierrot if people waited till now to order. CC may not send out any more copies to retailers anymore and may just sell what they have left for their own. That would make the most sense, keeping the money at home.

amazon will only let you max out on 3 copies for one order. I'm sitting on two sealed copies...well actually 3 because the one I ordered for myself I haven't even watched yet.

I think I'll shove these other two copies away for awhile and see what happens on ebay after they finally yank the title. Thought about getting more, but honestly I'd rather someone like myself is able to still order from amazon for immediate watching. I'm kind of against the whole scalping thing....sort of

Really? To be honest, I was enjoying "Gomorrah" as it was playing... but, I didn't love it until it was actually over and I just sat there and let it all sink in. It was the very next day that I ordered the book that the film was based on.

so this whole Studio Canal OOP business got my OCD in such a grind that immediately rented/borrowed the rest of the titles i don't own on BD to see if i'm missing anything... and so far... i'm not. the stuff i don't own currently are just not interesting to me =P.

meanwhile... i came across this:

did you guys really think Kagemusha is that badly transferred? is the studio for playtime and kagemusha bitrate starving these grainy movies?

Personally I loved Kagemusha's transfer. The grain was great in my oppinion. I thought that the color and detail was really good. I dont understand people who think grain equals a bad picture.

Although, too much grain is annoying.

yeah and I can watch some odd stuff but Gomorrah just wasn't grabbing me at all. Loved Howards End even though I wanted to hit a few people. haha

Take AVS pq review threads with a grain of salt. I mean, I love the forum and I spend more time over there than here but the bitrate-encode-DNR-EE NAZI-Brigade over there can get tiresome. Check the threads on Terminator Salvation and the Watchmen US to UK screenshot comparison threads for proof.

That being said, I'd personally rate Kagemusha a 3 out of 5 for PQ. It wasn't bad by any means and a lot of the shots look outstanding but the macro-blocking was a bit too much for me. A higher bitrate encode in and of itself could have helped at least a little bit with retaining the proper grain patterns in the source.

But who knows why it turned out the way it did...and since I had nothing to do with it I won;t comment too much. At the end of the day I'm happy with the title and likely wouldn;t pick a remaster if it were made available.

I even think people are way too harsh on 8 1/2. Sure, it has some ringing/possible EE and DNR but wasnt distracting to me or consistent enough to care.

I can honestly say that I'm not sure where CC's short and unhelpful reply comes from, maybe he's not sure why anyone would want to replace the solid Criterion artwork, but Nick you may wanna check out the custom cover art thread. Here ya go!

https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...ml#post2890654

glad I could help.
