Speaking of Something Borrowed, I had a film professor use that film as an example of what to do right when thinking of a concept. I quietly disagreed.

In fact he praised that film on several occasions.

Me too..if there was a wider group to choose from, I might have bought something...but that was the only one I wanted.

Avant-Garde can be a wide range of stuff, too much to even list (start with the basics I guess if you haven't already, like Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, Hans Richter, Man Ray, Germaine Dulac, etc). I found a good overview here for ya:

http://mubi.com/lists/avant-garde-film

If you want an experimental filmmaker along the lines of the others you mentioned, Paul Sharits is someone that isn't talked about as much that I would recommend. Bruce Conner as well.
Fuck yeah, thank you!

And, I got The Magick Lantern Cycle blu-ray for Christmas, so I'm covered with anger

Hope you enjoy it. Oh and try to read up on the films before you watch them.

Is that still a blind buy? You know Ozu, you know his work and how he make's movies so it's not truly a blind buy, or is it?
I think you're right to point this out.
There's degrees of your "blindness", as it were.
When I blind-buy, it's usually something I'm quite well informed about and I'm often very familiar with the director in the first place.
And, as someone pointed out already, we go to the cinema to "blind-watch" a film and often without any background on the film or filmmaker.
Speaking of blind-buys, I watched my copy of Godard's Weekend yesterday and must say it was not one of my favourite Godard's. I loved the absurdity of it and its descent into mayhem and madness, but I found a number of the overtly political statements to really drag and go on and on. In particular, there's a scene where the two garbage collectors make very long political statements.
No regrets buying it though

Far too often!
At home, I've got the perfect seating position in the middle of the room, in the sweet spot between my 7 speakers.
There's no one in front of me periodically checking the blinding beacon of light that is their phone.
I don't have a fool sitting near me who feels the constant need to explain the plot to their partner.
And the only person that rustles plastic food wrappers is Mrs Drbikeshorts. And that usually results in me pausing the blu-ray and delivering a scowl

Hahahaha.
I actually love it when they rush out.
I'm usually thinking, "Good, p#ss off!"
Then I can sit there and enjoy the music over the closing credits, look for tidbits of information in the casting, crew, and particularly the "special thanks".
Even when I watch a blu-ray or DVD at home, I almost always let the credits play through to the end.

True. I saw The Hobbit a few days back. During a few pivotal scenes in a large Orc cave, I kept thinking about how good those scenes would look here at home on my HDTV.

I kind of wish I was at a premier back then. I would have been up in arms defending this new bold style of filmmaking. It was a revolution which we missed & unfortunately now it's a bit dated. The riches of that film have more to do with it's aesthetic, Brechtian narrative approach and historical significance, thus leaving us contemporary audiences somewhat cold. Nonetheless, it's phenomenal in it's own right.

The effects of the painfully indulgent and lackluster first half were probably still in effect

This. Some films even demand it.

I watched Shame for the first time yesterday and had to watch the credits for a while to let the whole thing wash over me.

Very excited to see Ivan's Childhood moving to blu-ray and getting such stellar treatment. This is my most anticipated Criterion release in a long time.

Please Criterion...release more Soviet/Russian cinema on blu-ray.

Eagerly awaiting upgrades or new releases of:

The Cranes are Flying
Ballad of a Soldier
The Forty-First
Andrei Rublev

Bondarchuk's War and Peace (1965)
The Dawns Here are Quiet
Ivan the Terrible
Star
July Rain
Little Vera
Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears
I am Twenty

....among many others, including more great films from the silent era like Storm Over Asia.

I keep waiting for Kino to upgrade Come and See, but they have been painfully slow with it. I am not sure who holds the rights to Tarkovsky's Stalker and The Mirror (Kino?), but I want those too.

Is it true that Criterion can send you replacement cases for odd sized Criterion releases? I hate the slim line amaray that Benjamin Button has, i want it in the classic Criterion style!

I have to sit through the credits of a lot of my favorite movies, simply to complete the emotional catharsis effect. The Grey is a great example. I could have easily sat in the theater for another couple of hours listening to the music of the ending credits and getting my mind around what had happened.

Jumping topics...

The review of Ivan's Childhood put a smile on my face this morning. You'd better believe I'm going to buy that film right away. I hope that Best Buy sells it, so that I can use the Reward points from my HDTV, Blu-ray player, and James Bond Blu-ray purchases, but I'll get it from somewhere else if needed.
