I missed the last %50 off sale thats why I am asking. How did it work? B&N sells blu-rays at full-price(10% off at best) which is $39.99 then %50 off is $19.99. therefore Che must be $29.99 with the sale but these are not much. I bought mine for $33 and I bought 8 of my criterion blus from amazon.com when they were $16-21 a few months ago. am i missing something here?

well, B&N also has $5 off coupons at times. so for example, a $40 criterion:

$40 regular price
$20 with 50% off
$18 with 10% off membership
$13 with $5 off coupon

that's ideal. some cashiers won't take multiple discounts, but many do. even without the $5 off coupon, $18 plus tax is still pretty good. Che may be $50 regular price there, which would be $25 with 50% off, then $22.50 with membership (and $17.50 in the event of a $5 coupon)

Also, a lot of Criterion dvds are 29.99 instead of 39.99.

Not that many of you still buy dvds...but I do!

Whether a 13-year old child would enjoy "Lola Montes" or not, I don't know... but, I believe you'll be safe concerning the nudity.

Kids need to be scared. Not enough of that these days.

I remember I use to watch rated R movies when I was very little. Now I watch more meaningful films while others are catching up since they were on Power Ranger movies while I was watching the Shining. I guess that is why I don't fall for the Avatars, Transformers, etc.

I agree. Kids should "discover" movies like I had to do. Watching Cannibal Holocaust at 13 and started exploring the criterion collection around 15

I have been trying to introduce art-house to my wife and so far so little success. When Criterion started releasing blurays I started buying them immidiately. I wanted to see titles like the 400 blows, the third man on HD so much, so I watched them right away. This was the wrong move. As she had never seen movies other than blockbusters, this was kind of like too much art overload She liked a few(Monsoon wedding, the last emperor) but still everytime I offer watching a criterion bluray she says let me put my pjs on I know this can change and one can learn to appriciate such movies. I was like her too once. gradually I discovered why these movies are monumental and historic and started enjoying them.

so far she enjoyed, kieslowski's three colours, monsoon wedding, the last emperor, tarsem's the fall, nuri bilge ceylan's distant, climates, three monkey, fatih akin's head-on, the edge of heaven, she fell asleep watching last year at marienbad but she said she liked it she wants to watch it again. Looking at my collection can you recommend art-house movies to start-off?

thanks

You're fine...but truthfully, the 13-year old will probably fall asleep watching this film until the final 30 minutes.

You're not alone. Hehe...I looked at your collection (and you have good films) but I suppose that it depends on her interests really. The films that you mentioned, what was the connection that she enjoyed...lighthearted feel good films? If she liked "Monsoon Wedding" then I recommend Aamir Khan's "Like Stars On Earth" (an Indian which Disney released several weeks ago). It's hard to say...depends on your wife's interest. I've learned that my wife enjoys films when she watches with her lady friends or when she watches films with my son. Last night, I tried to get her to watch a little "Sunrise"...but not her thing.

Truthfully, I have an easier time having my seven-year-old watch films with me than my wife. Heck, he watched "Johnny Guitar" with me the other day. My wife, she'd watch a little but then slowly go to the computer and next thing you know, she's playing "Farmville" or whatever on FB.

Hehe...not as bad as the suggestions of people on theauteurs.com recommending noobs to show "Salo", "Fat Girl" or "Sweet Movie" to their children.

I've seen A Clockwork Orange at age 10, it was the biggest impact a movie had on me, ever.

On wednesday people were speculating about criterion's bd releases for may. Someone mentioned Walkabout, which was one of the names on that poll - the one that Howards End won
Remembering the titles on that poll, two others came to mind (along with Roeg's movie) : Picnic on Hanging Rock and Kwaidan. Anyone have some information on the release of these ? Can't wait to watch them in HD

Default May release speculation

seems to be centered mostly on Red Desert, Walkabout, and M.

Hopefully, Criterion posts the info today rather than Monday (15th of the month).

It certainly was not in that poll, it was on the list from Criterion's first Blu-ray announcement and it's the only one that's been unreleased (if you exclude Ran and Le mepris which Criterion lost).
