I was right about to bring that up-- they teased Grey Gardens on Blu-ray a year ago now & it still hasn't been announced for release yet! Is that normal? I feel like other films have been teased & released since the Grey Gardens tease... or maybe it just feels that way.

I'm anxious though!! What's the normal time span from newsletter tease to release?? Over a year?? (Though since titles have been announced for the next few months, we'll be pushing a year & a half at the earliest for this Grey Gardens release.)

He would have no doubt injected some of the spirituality back into it, and made something beautiful and weird if not entirely coherent.
Supposedly, Dali and Orson Wells were going play a part. A lot of the preproduction was used or inspired Alien and Star Wars design. There would be more fanatics of Dune than Star Wars, if it happened. Oh well, we still have Holy Mountain and El Topo, movies that Lynch will never top.

Wasn't Ridley Scott picked to direct Dune at one point?

Recieved my copy of Chungking Express from Amazon. After watching In the Mood for Love I knew I had to pick this up before the price sky rocketed for this oop title. Cant wait to finally watch it.

There is no way to say unfortunately. Some titles are teased for years and still have yet to show up. There is no telling.

I do wish we knew more about the process Criterion goes through when acquiring titles. Would be very interesting.

I am not sure, but H.R Giger made some preproduction designs for Jodorowsky before he worked on Alien (as you know Scott's movie). I am pretty sure he used some of Dune designs for Alien. By the way Pink Floyd was going to make the soundtrack to Jodorowsky's Dune. One of the greatest movies never filmed.

Found out that Ridley Scott was hired by Dino De Laurentiis to direct the film after Jodorowsky, in 1979 after Alien. Ridley Scott worked on pre-production and tried to get Harlan Ellison to write a script, but in 1980 Scott left to work on Blade Runner.

Now I remember where I heard about Ridley Scott's involvement with Dune. It is in the documentary Dangerous Days which is on the Blade Runner blu ray.

Interesting. I know Jodorowsky's version was going to be loosely based on the book. I wonder how faithful his version would have been and it would of been cool if the soundtrack was by Vangelis.

I am glad that Ridley Scott is back making science fiction films again.

I've always been enchanted by the premise and the the little mythology I'm familiar with. The thing was that I started reading the book when my school schedule was quite packed, so I figured I would have better luck during a break, but alas, I've been putting it off until this day. I've vowed to read more novels this year (as opposed to so many film textbooks), so maybe I'll pick it up soon

I hope One day a truly Great adaptation will be made.

I am glad there are other Jodorowsky fans in criterion forum.

Lynch and Aronofsky films should be gate way movies for more deeper surrealist movies, such as El Topo or Persona. I always felt that Lynch's surrealism was kind of superficial, my personal option.

I hope more movie fans will get a chance to see a Bunuel, Bergman, Jodorowsky, or Fellini film.

Next to Almodovar, he's my favorite director. Not just from a film-related view, but just as a person I find him endlessly fascinating. I'm always glad to see other fans as well.

Lynch and Aronofsky in the same league? Lynch films lesser than Jodorowsky, Buñuel? Superficial? People agreeing with this? Where am I?

It does have a plot (a little too simplified in Lynch's studio-approved version), but it takes a movie version to see it.
Lynch's version has good art-direction, has the Lynch Repertory Company (Kyle MacLachlan, Dean Stockwell), and came from the dream-surrealist period of his career closer to Eraserhead and Elephant Man than to Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, but it's just too danged slow-moving, and the internal whispering gets plain ol' laughable after a while.

Do what I did--Watch the Lynch version to get the sci-fi "wow" factor, and then watch the 00's SyFy cable miniseries to get the complete toned-down rational sense of the book plot.

I need to watch some Alejandro Jodorowsky movies. I've been meaning to watch El Topo and the others, but have never taken the time to do so.

On the subject of Dune, I read the first novel, but I moved on after that without reading any of the sequels. Most of my friends insist that the Sci-Fi channel version of Dune is much more faithful to the novel, but I have not been able to bring myself to watch that CGI-heavy stuff in lieu of the David Lynch film that I love so much.

The earnest, unintentional risibility of Lynch's Dune is what makes me take to that film. There's just too many bombastically silly moments: The Cube fighting, Sting, Sandworms........I'm just stating the obvious.

Anyways, is everyone satisfied with their Image Blu rays of Long Good Friday? Just saw mine the other day and there's certainly room for improvement.

Any chance "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" will get the "Criterion treatment" sometime in the future?

I'll get around to watching them someday. El Topo is one of those that I pick up every time I see it in a store, but somehow never buy.
