I am always surprise by the love this movie get's? I did not get to see it in theaters and saw it months later and all the while I kept asking myself "when does it get good, when?"

I respectfully submit that if you saw hate at all - let alone hate in full force - it's because that exactly what you wanted to see.

This. Who cares really? Congrats to Dunham, even though I'm.not a big fan myself. People need to get over it already. I can think of tons of other award winners that were far less deserving than Girls.

Change of subject, I won the bet I had against my friend. He bought Battle of Algiers back in 2011 during the November b&n sale and still hasn't watched it. I grabbed it this past sale. We had a bet I would watch my copy before he watched his. My copy finally showed up today after 7 weeks (far from the normal wait time) and he still hasn't watched his copy.

Purple Noon also came today, and Week End and Brazil came last week and I watched both yesterday, as I needed a bit of a break from Game of Thrones in literary form. I'm still trying to digest (pun inteneed) Week End. It was honestly more confusing and off kilter than Pierrot le fou and I'm not sure what to think of it. I'm off to watch Battle of Algiers now.

Not Criterion related nor Blu-ray but still...

Just notice that the 1958 French movie Les Miserables will be release on February 19 (just saw it on Amazon.ca) It's a great movie with Jean Gabin in the role of Jean Valjean. If you have a few extra bucks it's well worth it

You make a compelling case. Rhetoric doesn't get much more hateful than "I don't like her" and "Her show is hysterical and she's a fearless actress."

Scathing stuff, that is.

Oh, please, read the posts. The positive quote is in there to give context to Coop's post. Thats about the status quo whenever "She who must not be named" is mentioned.

Anyways, no need to polite the thread further.

This may not be the right place but:

Everyone seems to talk about Criterions on here and I guess should buy one and experience it myself.

So, any recommendations?

I like horror the most and I know Criterion releases lesser known films so I don't really know where to begin. It's nice to have real people recommend something than go in blind.

Thanks!

Hey guys. Any Australians out there know of any places to sell your old dvds or trade them in? I just never bothered cause i assumed Cash Converters would only give me 50 cents per dvd. Just have so many sitting around taking up space!

In addition to the ones posted above, I highly recommend Eyes Without A Face if you like horror movies. Sadly, it's only available on DVD right now, but it's definitely worth checking out if you don't mind the standard definition. Eyes Without A Face is a beautifully filmed masterpiece (with a few seconds that are decidedly not beautiful...but, hey, that's horror cinema for you).

Do you enjoy the pre-code horror films?

If you do, Criterion has a great blu-ray edition of Island of Lost Souls (1932).

The only real drama she generates these days is hand-wringing over the 'haters'.

A couple people brought up her wins and the responses were pretty measured. They weren't positive but so what.

For my money, this reflexive 'haters gonna hate' reaction to any and all dissent or criticism is just as silly (though granted not as vicious) as the intitial backlash.

Ill admit that I've never seen a pre-code film. Not a huge fan of older, B&W movies but I'm trying to get more into them lol.

I'm considering ordering the Universal Classic Monsters set to help with that.

I actually dont think ive seen any movie prior to the Wizard of Oz.

Forget horror, Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorite films period.

Guillermo del Toro's Cronos is an interesting take on the vampire mythology. It might not be to everybody's liking but I really enjoyed it. It's also a lot like Pan's Labyrinth in that it's not really scary exactly and not really horror exactly but it's really, really effective at whatever it actually might be.

If you consider suspense/thrillers like Psycho or The Silence of the Lambs part of the horror family then give Diabolique a look. It's as good as thrillers get.

The other peeps in this thread shall forgive me, but I'm going to steer you away from Criterions for a brief moment to recommend that you find a copy of the original 1922 version of Nosferatu to add to your horror collection. It's not yet available on Blu-ray, but it's very much worth grabbing on DVD.

Simply put, Nosferatu is my favorite vampire film ever made. Even today, it still unsettles. Now, this movie will probably not outright terrify you or having you holding the edge of your seat with white knuckles, but it is outstandingly creepy with its images and atmosphere. Nosferatu demonstrates such a genuine awe and respect for its subject matter that I'm inclined to think that the filmmakers actually did believe in vampires. You will know what I mean if you watch the film.

That Deer going Chaos Reigns is as creepy as I don't know what. Not really sure why but it is. Some people say this isn't really a horror film, well I beg to differ. The tone of the whole film is truly horrific.
