A pretty nuts film, but a great example of when the essays in the booklet provide guidance. I don't think I was really having trouble with the film, but the essays pretty much confirm what you thought it was about.
There's great stuff about Goddard being a total pr#ck to Mireille Darc, plus an interview with Goddard from the late 60s.
Such a scathing film full of unpleasant people.
Don't worry. The Battle of Algiers will set you right again
I've watched The Battle of Algiers before, although it was back in June. There were some interesting things about Week end, such as
[Show spoiler]Godard taking the piss out of Bergman
but certain parts of the film were disgusting, and I probably shouldn't have been eating g while watching it.

As for TV shows:
Sherlock
Doctor Who
Venture Bros.
Archer
Criminal Minds has been rather weak the past few seasons but There's an odd good episode
Murdoch Mysteries
Scooby doo mystery incorporated (they poke fun of Kubrick, Andy Warhol, Russ Meyer, and so many others )

I'm more of a reruns kind of gal, and I'll often watch old sitcoms more often than current ones.

I'm not sure it's a great blind buy candidate though. Even setting aside the graphic content, Lars is pretty much a poster boy for YMMV.

Then again, I bought it blind and really liked it so...
I'd love to see a poster of Lars Von-Trier and "YMMV" underneath in bold letters

The tv talk makes me curious..what are you guys' (as 'Criterion regulars' here) favorite current series?
There's only a handful of TV shows that I go out of my way to watch on a regular basis...granted...I don't have HBO, Showtime, and/or Starz.

Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad are tied at the top of my list. The writing is superb...how can you root for a crack dealer and a murderous MC?

Archer is just out and out funny...good writing and voice casting!

Not to play devil's advocate, but don't you think someone like Julia Louis-Dreyfus (for example, since she is who everyone else has been talking about) had a few advantages as well. She is a Louis-Dreyfus after all. My point is just that all filmmakers or actors have backgrounds, and a fair number of them have so-called advantages. I'm not picking on your post, by any means...just wasting time

As for TV, the only recent show I have watched is Sherlock, and I absolutely loved it. I watched all six episodes in a couple of days a few weeks ago, and immediately started to watch some of them again. My wife and I are also watching Weeds on blu, and I have been rewatching old seasons of Bones. Also, I just finished Freaks and Geeks, which I had never seen until now. I kind of loved it, although I had a hard time not constantly thinking about who the actors are and what they have done since, especially James Franco.

The shows that I rewatch the most are probably Twin Peaks, Buffy, and Veronica Mars.

It looks like Import CDs will have it for $14.xx...I might have to jump on it as well for that price.

I've got no problem with your (or Octogon's) opinion on Dunham. Interesting that we like some things and are polar-opposites on others.
We've recently finished the fifth season of Mad Men. That show seems to get better and better. I'd like to see a spin-off with Christina Hendricks where she just walks around all day in 60s outfits, smoking and looking disdainful.
We've recently started the third season of Breaking Bad. Wow. Another show that gets better and better. One thing I don't understand: why is classified as a drama? Cracks me up every minute. Incredible show.
We finished The Wire. Happy to say one of the greatest shows ever.
Just finished the second season of the British drama The Hour (starring The Wire's Dominic West) and really liked it. Ben Whishaw (Q from Skyfall) is cool and Romola Garai (from Atonement) is also fantastic. And easy on the eyes.
Recently finished Band of Brothers. Note: I seem to be really behind on a lot of TV shows. Anyway, truly great TV and killer blu-ray.
I'm also a huge fan of animated shows like Archer and Venture Bros.
My three greatest shows of all time: The Thunderbirds, Get Smart and The Larry Sanders Show.

Thanks for the reminder on the Venture Brothers...another well written cartoon with great voice acting! My wife is BIG on Murdoch Mysteries, as well as Inspector Morse/Lewis, Midsommer Murders, and most anything that runs on Masterpiece on PBS.

Well...looks like Amazon's "Prime Promise" of "get it on it's release date on Tuesday" falls by the wayside again. The Man Who Knew Too Much will be shipped ON the release date. Not a huge deal to me (I'll likley get it tomorrow or Thursday), as I won't watch it until the weekend...but if I was paying for Prime (my wife got another trial), I'd be kinda pissed.

There are masterpieces and then there are very occasionally films like The Battle of Algiers. I think this film is extraordinary and still incredibly powerful.
I would put it in my top five Criterion films.
Actually, top three with The Leopard and Seven Samurai.

I'm not sure what the deal is with them lately. My copy hasn't shipped either. Also, TO ROME WITH LOVE is expected Friday.

Sleeper/Hannah and Her Sisters are on schedule though...

It seems like this is happening frequently with Criterion releases. The only time it has happened to me recently was with Brazil. I wonder if Amazon is having a hard time getting the discs from Criterion early enough. Regardless, it seems strange.

When something like this happened to me in the past (a long time ago) I sent them an email, just to let them know and not asking for anything, and they ended up giving me a $5 gift card. Good customer service is always a pleasant surprise.

It seems like "some" preorders (Criterions) are hit or miss...it's either got to be stocking and/or pressure not to ship them before the release date? Looks like Import CDs have had their toes stepped on in this regard.

I will get Fantomas today...but that's not a preorder.

I would agree with your insight...I think it's a stocking thing.

What was the email address that you used for Amazon? Maybe I'll give it a shot...they have taken enough of my money.

I don't use prime, although It's now available on the Canadian site, but the shipping on the American site has really dropped in quality in general. They upped Canadian shipping prices, yet it takes 2 weeks or more to get here now. My last order took 3 weeks, and Canpar sent it to Dartmouth, called it a missort and sent it back to moncton to then deliver to central NS. Kinda stupid ssince they drove by the address I had it shipped to to return it to moncton.

I am pretty sure I just used the Help page and then elected to send an email when it gave me options, and then clicked on the option for shipping. It is definitely worth a shot.

I have no current favorite TV shows to speak of, since I do not have cable and I do not pick up any television channels. If not for my Blu-ray player, I would not even own a television.

This made the setup of my new HDTV pretty simple at the beginning of December. I plugged the television into the surge protector, hooked it up to the Blu-ray player with the HDMI cable, and I was good to go.

The last television show that I watched was when I rented the first season of The Walking Dead a couple years back, so I guess this would somewhat vaguely count as a favorite show, although I have not seen any subsequent episodes.

The Walking Dead series is routinely filmed in my area, and I live within walking distance of the building that was used for the Centers For Disease Control during the first season. A year and half ago, two running friends and I met at 4:00 in the morning so that we could go running through one of the film sets of the series without being caught. We ran through the road blocks, ran by the set trailers, took photos of one another by various landmarks, and finally had to leave when a security cop spotted us. Pretty funny.

To Rome With Love was a film with some pretty mixed reviews, but I adored it.
Completely nuts and silly, but so genuine and endearing.
Same as Midnight in Paris
I've never seen Sleeper, but I'm fan of Woody Allen's so I think that'll be a blind-buy.
