Is this the first month where all new releases have BD versions, no DVD only titles? Well in the main line at least, Eclipse is a different beast.

Technically yes, but three are BD/DVD re-releases, only Stagecoach and By Brakhage: Vol. 2 are new, whereas February saw three new additions in BD and so does March.

It does appear that way... plus, more blu-ray releases versus the single DVD releases in the main collection.

This may be my most costly Criterion month ever. M and Stagecoach are definite purchases, while Brakhage and Walkabout are very tempting. I need to see Walkabout again, while I need to simply see more Brakhage to see if its worth it.
What the heck? How am I supposed to have my numbers in order on the shelf if the Brakhage come together but aren't numerically consecutive?

Well, you could put it with the outer box's spine out so just 518 shows. Or you could break it up, place the two volumes in their separate places, and then place the box itself next to Vol. 2 so all 3 spine numbers are in the right place (aka the mega OCD way )

Deal is over. It's up to $21.99 now. Thankfully I bought it last week for $19.99.

I'm currently up to date on all Criterion blus.
Funny thing is, I didn't buy my first one until December 20th.
So I've purchased all of them within a two month time span.
I was planning on posting pics after I get my February releases in.

And am I the only one who puts them in alphabetical order instead of by spine number?
I would put them in spine number order if they had re-ordered them starting at #1 like MoC did, but having random numbers and gaps would really mess with my OCD.

Interestingly, 518 is not listed on the DVD side of things. If you pull up the DVD listings, it goes to 517, and if you pull up the 518 page from BD, it doesn't list a DVD option. So here's my question (it's not a big deal, just curious)

Does that mean that the box set will be Blu-ray only? If so, does that mean the first Blu-ray only number? And if so, how weird that it's an empty box.

I mean, the spine number stuff is cute and I like to arrange my titles that way, but there are so many inconsistencies and you could never even get them all anyway thanks to the OOP titles that I don't think it's worth getting bothered about. There are quite a few spine numbers that are just the outer shell that holds cases with their own spine numbers. There's Bergman Island that has its own spine number on the DVD side, but is included as a special feature on the Seventh Seal BD. And then the Yojimbo / Sanjuro boxset that DOESN'T have its own spine number for whatever reason.

Impressive collection for a student! Looking forward to updated pictures of your Criterions.

Regarding spines, I'm with you there. Unless you've been keeping up with the DVDs as well, it's sort of silly to order the films by spine number. Also, once you obtain a considerable amount, finding a movie would take longer if not ordered alphabetically. I guess it's there for the true die-hards that have been following Criterion for years.

Oh, not "bothered" in the slightest. I have no intention of ever collecting them all or really caring about spine numbers; I just found it mildly interesting enough to post.

I recently placed an order for Pierrot le fou BD version and grand illusion on dvd with criterion on their website. I received today ONLY pierrot le fou. Is it normal? Will I be getting Grand illusion later on or did they do a mistake and forget to ship it? Or maybe they were out of stock?

That's because the first releases of those two films were separate without a box to sell them together.

Just to clarify you are talking about DVD release, right? I would hope those two films packaged together will have their own spine numbers.

Last Year at Marienbad
The 400 Blows

I was leaning The 400 Blows, but wanted some other opinions.

Thanks in advance.
The 400 Blows is great, but The Seventh Seal is another essential classic! Actually THERE ALL GOOD! Buy em' as you can afford em'!

The Last Emperor is one my favorite movies. I was so happy when Criterion licensed it and I was finally able to toss my old Non-Anamorphic Artisan DVD. Sadly the Blu-Ray doesn't have both cuts of the movie like the CC DVD does, but it's still worth having.

Yes. The original DVDs that came out in 1999 with this cover art as #52 and #52:

There was no two-pack box.

Then the DVD re-releases came out in 2007, individually as well as in an unnumbered box.

Now the Blu-ray releases will mimic the 2007 DVD re-releases.

That's why you buy the Bergman Island, so you don't have the hole in your collection....

Hehe... to tell the truth, I bought it during the 50% off sale because it was so cheap, forgetting it was on the Seventh Seal BD.
