For Criterions, check out up Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes.

Lola and Querelle. Most of his later films are very colorful as he made bigger films production-wise (Lili Marleen being one).

Watched Last Year at Marienbad. I was mesmerized and confused at the same time. Stunning visuals, though. Something that I am going to have to watch multiple times.

Also watched Le Havre and absolutely loved it! Going to check out more from Kaurismaki. Loved the tone of the film.

Just based on colors, not the melodramas part, try Seijun Suzuki's Detective Bureau 2-3 or The youth of the beast. Very colorful movies.

Otherwise, of course, stuff like Powell - Pressburgers's The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, or Renoir's The River or French Cancan.

Quick question. I love the criterion collection but often wondered why some have incredible and unique boxes and some show up in really cheap looking black cases. It really sucks when you are putting your criterions together.

+1

No other director uses colors in the same way Almodovar does nowadays. Such a shame they are taking so long to hit BD this side of the pond.

Kenneth Anger uses colors in great ways too but you said you got the Magick Lantern Cycle for Christmas (GREAT release, among the very best available in BD) so you got yourself covered already .

I used my Barnes & Noble member discount and the "Buy Two, Get One Free" sale to buy these three for $76:
Ivan's Childhood
Last Year at Marienbad
Red Desert

I owned all three of these on DVD, and they were all top priority for upgrades.
Ivan's Childhood simply has some of the most amazing cinematography in film history, and, although it's a downer of a movie, I cannot look away.
Last Year at Marienbad puzzled the hell out of me the first couple of viewings, but I love the beautiful and eerie "trapped in a loop" feel of the story. It could be the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. It could be the woman's jealous husband replaying various scenarios of his wife's affair in his mind throughout the movie. The characters could actually be ghosts who are doomed to repeat the same life moments for all eternity. I still do not know, but I just love watching this film.
Red Desert is a repeat-viewing flick not just because of my fascination with Monica Vitti. I like the way that Michelangelo Antonioni uses drab industrial backdrops to a creative effect, as if to show the alienating effect or the strange offbeat beauty of these settings. I look forward to upgrading my DVDs of L'avventura and L'eclisse to Blu-ray someday. Did I mention that this film stars Monica Vitti?

...and, yes, I have already ordered the plastic Criterion alternate case for Last Year at Marienbad.

Are you talking about random DVD editions? If so I have always assumed as the company made more money they were able to increase quality not just of the on disc content, but also the packaging as well.

Since I'm new to Criterion, I was wondering if anyone knows of a sale coming up anywhere? Wondering if I should wait or get one or two more with U&S this weekend.

It depends a little bit on the title.

$20 after U&S is a very good price. You probably wouldn't be able to beat that by very much until the next Barnes and Noble sale in July (and even then beating by more than a couple dollars isn't guaranteed).

$25 after U&S would be a closer call. Criterion themselves run occasional one-day 50% sales, Amazon will sometimes drop random (or at least it seems random) CC titles down around $20-$22 or so.

Still, if it's something you really want $25 isn't a bad price. It's not like Amazon will have it for fifteen bucks next week.

I went ahead and ordered the region-free UK edition of Melville's Le Silence de la Mer. I ventured to Amazon UK today, noticed that the price had creeped up a few pounds, and ordered the Blu-ray from a third-party distributor who was still selling brand-new copies for the former price.

Today's pickup of Ivan's Childhood, The Tin Drum & Pina for $80.

Not an amazing price, but it's ok and I have them now as opposed to waiting.

This may just be because I have a degree in sociology from a somewhat liberal university and the fact that I'm a staunch feminist, but from the first time I saw marienbad, it seemed so clear to me that the film was about the woman's rape by the male protagonist, and the subsequent psychological effect of her unsuccessful attempts to compartmentalize and sublimate the trauma. I think in one of extras this was mentioned as a more modern interpretation, but it hit me with force right away.

This movie is one of the best examples of how textual interpretation is a dynamic and subjective process involving the biases and expectations (known and unknown) of the interpreter.
