I actually think the release of the month might be the Eclipse Series 21:
Oshima's Outlaw Sixties followed by By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two. |

![]() First of all, half of this forum has been the "I want Seven Samurai", "When is Seven Samurai.....?", "I need Seven Samurai" posts and the ones who don't like it are the evil ones? Now it's "I can't live with Fox's release of a Wes Anderson movie, so it needs yet another release by Criterion" people, and yet, I am the evil one. Those are the people who don't care for other releases. You are far from the truth about me buddy. The problem is I like more than samurai movies and the rest are pushing away the talks on this forum about other releases with their Seven Samurai love-fest. How come we don't talk about Bigger than Life, instead of every page being about Seven Samurai and Wes Anderson? The other half of this thread are the "I am to lazy to look at the first page about replacement cases" people and then get mad because the know they are lazy and people catch them on it, but still those people are the evil ones for calling them out. I am going to stand my ground on here. With the 100 of Seven Smaurai lovers on here, I am going to be the 1 who don't really care for it, and you can hate that all you want, it won't change the fact you all will have yet another release of it by the end of this year, on BLU! OMG! ON BLU!!!!!!!!!!! Last edited by SpiderBaby; 02-14-2010 at 04:01 AM. |

Not directly Criterion related...actually making quite a stretch here...but I just saw A Single Man and absolutely loved it.
Set in the 60's, and having a great wardrobe/set designer made this film look a lot like the era of films that Criterion has released a lot of. |

Yes, that Eclipse set does look very titillating, I must say. That may be a buy during a 50% off sale (and I don't have any Eclipse sets as the lack of extras can't justify the price usually) along with Early Bergman.

3 months ago we had the same problems and I was under the understanding this wouldnt continue. Everyone here is welcome to their opinion and is free to debate the post, however insults, whether indirect or direct dont produce positive discussion and lead down the path of no return

I like samurai films. And Wes Anderson. But I also enjoy plenty of other directors. I don't see the need to criticize each other's taste. I can be entertained by a Michael Bay movie, and then be consumed by a Kon Ichikawa, Max Ophuls or Federico Fellini film. I recognize the difference between entertainment and art. I feel they both have their proper place in the world of cinema.

Hi Everyone!
I have just found great interest in Criterion releases. I have ordered Monsoon Wedding, which is scheduled to arrive tw., The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Fellini's 8 1\2. All of them a blind buys. ![]() I am curious to get some recommendations. Can you recommend Wings of Desire? How about The Man who fell from Earth? and In the Realm of the Senses plus For All of Mankind. What are they like and why would you suggest getting them? I have read the reviews, but I'd like to get some additional input. Which other Criterion releases do you think I should add to my collection? Thanks a lot in advance ![]() |

Which other Criterion releases....if you are open to the DVD's...the box sets are amazing. But if you mean strictly Blu-ray, then I would go for "Pierot le fou", "Play Time", "Paris, Texas", "The Third Man", "400 Blows". But wait and see if B&N does do the 50% off Criterion sale next month. |

Thanks for the tips. I checked out your recommendations, and I think they all sound great. Problem is that "Pierrot le fou" and "The Third Man" aren't available at Amazon.com anymore, and they are very expensive. I live in Europe, so I don't think the sale at B&N would benefit me, but I appreciate the heads up. ![]() I am very much looking forward to all the great Akira Kurosawa movie releases coming up! |

Does anyone buy Criterion films when they are not priced at MSRP anymore? Soon there is going to be no incentive for retailers to even carry Criterion films if they have to essentially sell them at cost or even below cost to get them out the door. That is precisely why you don't see a lot of Criterion films at the big box retailers, and probably why Barnes and Noble have these sales in the first place. I usually end up paying around thirty five bucks for my Criterion films...which is a drop in the hat compared to what I used to pay for the LD's many many years ago.

All of my Criterions (57?) have been either at retail or the 30% off coupon that borders would send out.
Except for the blus, all sub $20 thanks to amazon.... I have ordered a few relatively cheaply through dvdplanet about a year ago but their prices have gone up. And I have missed out on all the B&N sales because I never knew of them, but the next one I will be all over. As far as Criterion goes, if you are picking up the dvd, go through their website (cheapest as any other price you are going to get, plus when you spend $500 you get $50 credit). Blus, Amazon has it covered. Unless I'm totally missing something I dont really think there I was way to get their dvds unusually cheap (besides the B/N sales). |
