I'll probably pick up The Man Who Knew Too Much at Best Buy during U&S if they can ever find it in their store . I have the Masterpiece Collection and plan on buying the Classic Collection when it comes out. I just wish these other companies would do a better job on some of these releases instead of rushing them. I do like my Criterion releases, but the price is a little steep IMO.

The Academy got it right in 2007 with Best Picture. The last time they got it right before that was.. in the 60s?

I typically get decent service from B&N, but they really were dense on me this time.

During the Criterion sale, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" blu-ray actually was briefly listed at 50% off despite it not being released during the window. I ordered it because I was going to pick it up anyway. If they didn't ultimately honor the sale price, well fine.

They didn't honor the sale price. OK. But when it arrived, it was the DVD copy. I contacted customer support and they offered to send a return label and then send me the blu-ray.

I returned the DVD and waited. And then yesterday I got... the DVD again. I contacted them a second time and told them they sent me a DVD twice. They offered to send me a return label and suggested I order the blu-ray again from the website.

At this point I mentioned that I wasn't going to demand anything, but I was disappointed that they didn't honor the price from the sale. Then I was told "The Man Who Knew Too Much" wasn't part of The Criterion Collection.

I pointed out that the very link they sent me said "CRITERION COLLECTION" at which point I was told only "The Qatsi Trilogy" and "Monsters and Madmen" are part of The Criterion Collection. What?! Especially odd that they mentioned Qatsi as it wasn't part of the sale.

I suppose I didn't really offer any productive info here. I apologize for that. I just needed to vent for a moment. Ultimately all that happened was a paid a reasonable price for the blu-ray, but it was quite a weird trip.

Though this thread features a (mostly) more discerning crowd, there's something to be said, generally, for the fact that Silver Linings Playbook is the most easily-recommendable film of the Oscar Best Picture field, which bodes well for its chances there. It is perhaps, to be clear, among the weakest pictures of that field that actually has a shot to win.

Foreign Correspondent looks to be the next Hitchcock Criterion could release - at least it's streaming on Hulu+ right now. As nametag mentioned the recent BFI restorations look to be game, and my best first guess from that grouping would be Blackmail: with its historical status as the 'first' British talkie, and a silent version to boot, this would be a no-brainer for Criterion to release.
Moar Hitchcock please!

Two films at sundance are drawing comparisons to Terrence Malick:
Shane Carruth's Upstream Color &
David Lowery's Ain't them Bodies Saints

I bought a Criterion Blu-ray in-store. It didn't have the Blu-ray sticker on the wrapping, but the disc has the Blu-ray logo and it is deinitely Blu-ray.

Some "new" Criterions may be re-wraps (shrink-wrapped instead of cellophane).

I'm not sure how the rights to the Hitchcock silents stand after the BFI restoration. Before, half were owned by StudioCanal (Criterion's enemy #1) and ITV (from whom Criterion licensed The 39 Steps and The Man Who Knew Too Much). Personally of the nine, I'd like to see Criterion release The Lodger and Blackmail (is this one of the 9?). StudioCanal supposedly has the rights to Blackmail. I bought the StudioCanal/Lionsgate DVD set of 5 early Hitchcock films, and as much as they are historically important, I don't think most of them are particularly good (especially the silents other than The Lodger). If Criterion does get the rights, I'd rather them release 'em in one quick go than the once-every-few-months model they've been doing with the Chaplins.

I'm much more interested in Criterion releasing the rest of Hitchcock's post-The Man Who Knew Too Much British output which is realistic as they are all owned by ITV. Would love it if they released Lifeboat if Fox has no plans to do so. I believe Image (which owns Criterion) has the rights to Under Capricorn, so maybe they can work something out there?

Just curious, I know Psycho already has a blu-ray release, but can anyone tell me why Criterion never added it to their collection?

The rights for the "Hitchcock Nine" are still split between ITV and Studio Canal. My most wanted Hitchcock Criterion would be Under Capricorn - an undervalued film that was beautifully shot by Jack Cardiff.

Hitchcock's The Ring is a good possibility for a Criterion release. It was recently restored and is BFI controlled.

Haven't heard much about the first, but Ain't them Bodies Saints has had my attention for a bit. One of my most anticipated of the year.

The first one was the Carruth's follow up to the mind bending Primer. Sam Adams of the AV Club says it's "one of the most transcendent experiences of my moviegoing life." High expectations.

Not sold by Amazon.com but by other sellers that's why, should I trust them?

I have never bought from those sellers, but, I've rarely ever had problems with other marketplace sellers, so I'd say its worth a shot.

Duly noted, going to keep an eye out for Upstream Color, for sure.

Now Primer - that would make a great Criterion release, it would be right up their alley I would have thought.
