Fantastic story!
I was really just expecting a quite simple and straight forward story, so was very surprised that it was such a cleverly layered and non-linear narrative.
I watched it with the Matti Bye score, so I'll have to go back and re-watch it soon with the KTL score.
Damn, the last time I saw the film was on TCM. I wonder what score was used?

After reading the review here, I watched it with the KTL score - I also highly recommend it. The dark, almost-droning ambient music fits the mood of the film very well. One of these days I'll go back and watch it with the Matti Bye score, but I'll probably always remember it with the KTL one.

The narrative structure and acting caught me off-guard. For such an early film, I figured it would be much more straight-forward - it was so much better than I expected!

You're better off trying a Hulu Plus free trial (or just subscribing for a month or two).
You beat me to the punch, was going to say get Hulu Plus that way you can see Andrei Rublev in anamorphic widescreen, which their very old DVD of it is not in.

Yeah I've been watching a lot of them recently, but not to the extent that I could watch them.

1) Especially live tweeting, that's the worst. I don't think you're giving the film it's due if you're multi tasking or preoccupied with your phone.

2) I've had my Nikkatsu Noir set setting next to the BD Player for two months, should I just dive in chronologically?

That's a good idea, by release date, if you believe that a filmmaker is influenced by what has been done before. I think that most of them are.

Perhaps, we should just do Post-your-picture Friday.
Not sure if I'm watching anything yet. I've started reading Wolf Hall, and plan to finish it tonight, and start Bring Up the Bodies, the sequel to it. I may watch The Caine Mutiny, seeing as I read that yesterday. I may watch High and Low too, as I also read King's Ransom yesterday. The Kurosawa film was far more enjoyable than the novel. Mifune's characters was an immoral *******. Kurosawa definitely softened him up and made him more human. The ending was much better too.

I see you enjoy reading then watching.

Are you going to re-read Gatsby then see Gatsby 3D this summer?

How is the Caine Mutiny novel? I saw the film back in December and really liked it.

Yes I agree, it's just too daunting diving into hours of content like box sets/ TV series. I like finishing what I star on the same day.

Did anyone else have a problem with the disc? Towards the end, my copy goes all watery and blurry and there's wet sniffing on the soundtrack
Yeah, I have the same problem.

Faintly related, I watched Red Dawn on Blu-ray a couple nights ago and had completely forgotten that Harry Dean Stanton starred in the movie.

I've bought a ton of Blu-rays over the past couple of months, so most of my weekends have featured extensive viewing marathons. Since my Blu-ray collection consists of personal favorite movies with no real blind buys, the past two months have felt almost like a film class.

I have a few recent Criterion purchases on the burner to watch. Léon Morin, Priest, Last Year at Marienbad, Red Desert, and Ivan's Childhood. I've seen 'em all before, but this will be the first time seeing them on Blu-ray.

Non-Criterions? Quite a few. I usually watch movies the evening that I purchase them, but I've bought so many the past couple of months that I'm behind.

I really enjoyed it and it won the Pulitzer. The ending is vastly different from the film, and Herman Wouk seems to have a lot more nudity in the books, because almost every other page, some sailor is running around naked. Queeg also seems far more pathetic, creepy, and mentally ill. Bogey was good in the role, but he make Queeg more sympathetic. The novel also focused more in Willie's background. I haven't watched the film in awhile, but a lot of it is really close to the novel. There were a few slight changes of events, and some stuff was cut out obviously. I highly recommend it.

Warning. Some might be offended by the portrayal of the black crew members in the novel, as they have the ebonic accent and are seen as totally stupid.

I'm dreading Gatsby to be honest. I probably will reread it though.

Sometimes I watch before I read the novels, Most times I try to read before I watch. I'm also on a bit of a reading kick right now anyway. I've read about 40 books of various genres and lengths since the first of the month, with a few being rereads. Many have been adapted as film or TV series, or will be soon. Not all of the film TV adaptations were as good ad their books, although on a fee occasions the film was better than the book. Some, such as Eye of the Needle, were par. I enjoy the film, though many might say It's poor.

Yeesh, a 3-D Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann? That sounds like something The Onion would dream up.

The Jack Clayton version was not perfect, but I would be more inclined to watch it than go to the theater for the new one. I can see how a 3D version would suit the whole "fall of the American dream" subject matter in a fitting way, though.

Speaking of Jack Clayton, I wish that someone would get cracking on a Blu-ray release for Something Wicked This Way Comes.

If it does well then look for Tender is the Night 3-D.
