They probably helped out on the restoration and or re-release of the film.

My girlfriend watches everything with me, she loved Playtime. She gets to pick to tonight what to watch. The choices are; Ran, Revanche, Lola Montes, and The Ladykillers.

Hehe...for those who watch "Lola Montes", please chime in if you agree with Sarris's 1963 comment of "Greatest Film of All time". Of course, he explained himself about the comment once again in 2008.

Again, I side with Roger Ebert, I do not feel that Martine Carol was right for the role of Lola Montes...I don't know if Greta Garbo or even Marlene Dietrich would have been a good choice since it was made 14-years later after Garbo's last film but it would have been an interesting return and It may have been a successful film in the box office if she did return.

But would be curious to see how some of you feel about the film. Production values are absolutely beautiful but for me, Martine Carol seemed like a miscast as Lola Montes and as much as I enjoy Sarris's reviews, I personally don't feel this is the "Greatest Film of All Time".

L'Oreal has become the biggest sponsors of film festivals in Europe but in this case (from Europa Film Treasures: The Lola Montès film has been restored by the French Film Archives in collaboration with the Films du Jeudi, the Films de la Pléiade and Marcel Ophuls, the Thomson Foundation for cinema and television heritage, with the support of the Franco-American Cultural Fund, thanks to the patronage of L'Oréal and Agnès B, with the assistance of Filmmuseum Münchnen, the Royal Film Archives of Belgium, the Film Archives of the town of Luxembourg and the technical advice of François Ede.)

Is the original Ladykillers any good? I saw the remake and frankly thought it sucked.

So is it true that Criterion does have the rights to Chaplin films now?

Supposedly it is. Front page of this website says Criterion is reportedly the studio with rights to at least two Chaplin films in the U.S.

FYI--New copies (remaining stock?) of the OOP Ran DVD seem to be backordered at bestbuy.com. I just placed an order (I know, I should have done it before it went OOP) and it is supposedly being delivered between March 1 and March 15.

I should note that I found out via this thread. It seems that someone received a new copy around February 1st.

I would love to have those on Criterion by the end of the year, that would be fabulous.

That is wonderful news..and here I thought I had to buy the imports. That is spectacular news especially for those who have waited years for the 2-disc DVD sets to go down in price. Those oop discs are too expensive!

But Chaplin films on Blu!!! That would be nice!!! With MoC and KINO bringing silent films to Blu-ray, I hope Criterion brings "The Kid", "Passion of Joan of Arc", "Pandora's Box" and possibly other silent films on Blu!!!

And this makes me happy because there are many of you on this thread who have never watched silent films but are buying all Criterions on Blu...so, hopefully this will jumpstart your interest in them. So, hopefully Criterion silents on Blu happens!

Being a big fan of Sarris' writing, I know that he has disavowed his earlier claim of Lola being the greatest movie of all time. In fact, I think he changed his mind on that many years ago, so it's a bit cheeky using his quote to market the new DVD and Bluray.

Yes, I thought he shifted this claim to The Earrings of Madame de....

It's actually all the MK2 Chaplin films. These two, plus:

A Woman of Paris
The Gold Rush
The Circus
City Lights
Modern Times
Monsieur Verdoux
Limelight
A King in New York

And a number of short films, including those that make up the "Chaplin Revue" feature. Essentially, all the content of the MK2/Warner release, plus whatever new content they create. And hopefully multiple cuts of the films when applicable.

I would expect only the "big" titles on Blu (The Kid, The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times and The Great Dictator) at best.

Can anyone confirm packaging for the the combo pack of Sanjuro & Yojimbo is the exact same as the individual releases? It sounds like they are the same but the combo pack has a cardboard slip case that can hold both?

That is exactly right. The only difference is the outer slipbox that the two releases fit in.

Wow Revanche and Hunger really interest me as releases. I really want to check those out.

As for Pierrot Le Fou, I still haven't watched it. I wish I watched it earlier and if I had enjoyed it I would have bought it then.

Do you think Criterion will try to go out and acquire titles like A Prophet, and L'Efant?

Or how about American indies nobody is considering for release, The Painted Veil or Mean Creek?

Paramount does a good job on their movies but do they even care for Mean Creek?

I couldn't get through Mean Creek without thinking about Home Alone.
He looks SO much like his brother.

Personally, when I watched it, I was expecting such a great film and at the end I was complacent. Actually, I was thinking more of "I wish they released 'Earrings of Madame de' on Blu-ray"'. I'm going to be truthful, not a film I can see myself watching again.

Btw, for those who have not read the latest interview with Roger Ebert, please check out the Esquire Magazine: http://www.esquire.com/features/roger-ebert-0310

Incredible that with all he has faced healthwise and the battle with jaw cancer, he still manages to catch film and continue to productive with his books and review.

I wish I had my 3 new films in.
Shoulda ordered from Amazon instead of Wherehouse.com...they said shipping is 1-3 weeks!
I can't imagine waiting until sometime in March to finally receive them.
