Hi retablo,

Last night I watched the entire film alone in 1.66:1. Today I saw it with the family in 1.33:1. I only compared different segments with the 1.85:1 version.

There is a very nice video essay on the release that explains why Criterion felt that it was important to present the film in three different ratios. You should see it. I personally prefer the 1.66:1 version, though the 1.33:1 version is the one I am used to because of the DVD release.

As the gentleman from Criterion explains, however, all three look very good, because the film was lensed by a master cinematographer. It is difficult not to agree with this observation because once you get the BD set and start comparing, you will quickly realize that all three versions have a very natural flow.

I hope that you and everyone else enjoy the release as much as I did.

Pro-B

ps. Preacher

When do they announce what's coming next? the 15th each month? I always like hearing predictions. And from going back and reading up on Days of Heaven, I can only imagine people are excited for Badlands.

Yes, the 15th.

Like I always post, I want a David Lynch Box Set, Vanilla Sky, and Waitress.

Are there rumors/speculation of a sale, or just wishful thinking?

That On the Waterfront set looks amazing.

Criterion!!!!! For the love of all that is holy, please please please release Nobody Knows on Blu-ray. I just watched this magnificent film and need to own it or my life will be incomplete! I'm actually kinda pissed that you haven't yet.

Can't wait to watch the director's other films, including his one Blu-ray (Criterion) release: Still Walking.

btw, people who recommended Kurosawa films to me awhile back in this thread, I saw Yojimbo and enjoyed it quite a bit! Definitely better than Rashomon and not boring at all. Fun to compare A Fistful of Dollars to the movie it directly ripped off. Sanjuro is next!

My appetite for Criterions is never ending!!

I'm at 53 criterion blus now.

And the upcoming months are gonna be wallet busting!

Didn't care to own On The Waterfront, but the review has sold me!!

Might I ask your guys' favorite Criterion in your collection?

Thanks

Scott

If I remember correctly, the releases coming out the next week or so are usually listed as in stock.

The sales tend to be on in-stock DVDs and Blu-rays only (not backorders, not non-disc merch like replacement cases, posters, etc.). However, last year they did honor back orders because of site issues and lots of Facebook "fan" whinging. Newer releases and boxed sets typically sell out first.

Prices are discounted from the MSRP not the website price, so 50% off of $39.99 not $31.96.

U.S. and Canada orders only, of course.

Some past Blu-ray.com posts about the Criterion.com sale truths:

Complaining about site performance/site being offline

Complaining that discount is off of MSRP, not website price

Complaining that preorders aren't eligible

Complaining that [desired release] is backordered

Haul lists

Complaining that shipping is too high for one disc, taking my business to Amazon, etc.

Complaining that shipping to Canada is too high, eh

Complaining that they do not sell to/ship to anywhere outside of U.S./Canada, sometimes branching off into misguided rants about region-coding

Complaining/tweeking 24 hours later that their order hasn't shipped yet

Generalized complaining

Complaining that there is a problem with their order and asking the Blu-ray community to solve it rather than, you know, contacting Criterion customer service like a grown-up
Thanks for the list.

Part of me hopes that the pre-orders won't count because I can save some money for later

I'd rather there be a sale as opposed to the alternative, which you can easily avoid by not looking at this thread during the discount period. You're coming off kind of whiny yourself.

I have more than one favorite Crtierion, but I will choose Still Walking because it was the most influential. It was a blind buy using a Borders gift card, and at the time it was the only Criterion they had that I had never seen. From the description on the package, I wasn't sure if I would like it. Was I ever in for a surprise. I loved it so much it led me to explore more deeply into Japanese cinema and now I am a huge fan of many different Japanese directors and their work.

Also, BN has 50% off sales every November and July. Criterion announces new titles around the 15th of each month.

These two bits should be put in the thread title as they're asked just about every week.

If the Upgrade & Save threads are any indication, having info in the title will not stop people from asking for that exact same info.

It's only just into Febuary :P There's still almost a whole year left worth of releases to challenge On the Waterfront's and hopefully there are indeed some more mighty impressive releases. On the Waterfront is no doubt a contender for release of the year already though which is very impressive that it's not even a matter of consideration.
