I just laughed and told him that I thought it was a wonderful movie.

These days, though, whenever someone who is a casual movie fan asks me about my affinity for Criterion movies, I just show them Dazed and Confused. That one probably has more universal appeal than any other Criterion that I know of.
- I actually had no idea until just recently that the ending to the American version was changed....which sounds pretty awful to me.

- As for universal appeal, Charade is a fantastic one. I think it's physically impossible to hate Charade.

- The whole 'the stuff I watch is just for me' thing is not just with Criterion releases.... I'm currently watching the films in the new 'Lost films of Herschell Gordon Lewis' blu-ray set...which I'm honestly sure everyone I personally know would absolutely passionately hate.

The film-noir is probably my favorite genre and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's full of mystery and suspense that will have you guessing until the very end. That's what a mystery film is supposed to be. Can you guys recommend me the best film-noirs of all time? I plan on picking up The Maltese Falcon very soon because I enjoy Bogart.
Film-Noir is probably my all time favorite genre as well...enjoy The Maltese Falcon, aside from Casablanca...my all time favorite Bogie film...a classic!!!

Wish you did have a region free player, cause Double Indemnity is another great noir release, and it's by MOC. So whenever you decide to crack on the region free player, you'll have to check that one out!

I agree. When the older Werner Herzog stuff is released on Blu-ray someday, I will be able to repel other people from my home with the greatest of ease.

Unfortunately, Out of the Past, starring Robert Mitchum, is not available on Blu-ray at present time.

Criterion had a good DVD run of film noir stuff years ago. Thieves Highway, Night and the City, The Naked City, and Blast of Silence.

With Blu-ray, The Maltese Falcon is a great place to start.

Hopefully we get Double Indemnity in the U.S. soon, as well as Touch Of Evil.

Thanks! Hopefully those DVD Criterions are upgraded soon!

Definitely...

I'd add Sweet Smell of Success and Pickup on South Street (also on Criterion DVD)... and Leave Her to Heaven will soon be released on blu, which is another really excellent one.

I've got a few blind buys coming my way. Solaris and Pina, as far as non pre-order items go. The latter will be my first 3D blu, but my dad recently got a great 3D TV and player, so I'm eager to finally use that.

Also, one more week until The Kid With The Bike. Can't wait to watch that again.

EDIT: I just researched the Statistics page and answered my own question. The Dark Knight is, by far, the most popular movie that appears in the most collections on this site. Batman Begins is second place. Inception is not far behind. Wow, the kids love their Christopher Nolan.
Showgirls made me convert.

I will definitely give that commentary track a go. Admission of Guilt: I've listened to commentary tracks but I've never seen a film while the commentary track was playing. I've gotta find a way to download them so I can listen to them while I study.
Yeah, it's tricky. I've barely enough time to watch everything I want to watch, let alone watching with a commentary. I often put them on if I'm riding my exercise bike.

I just had a quick look at your collection and I didn't see Force of Evil. Frankly, it's a must-see for the genre, for John Garfield, for Abraham Polonsky's killer dialogue, and for a shouting match between Garfield's character and his brother.
What about The Postman Always Rings Twice? It's also another great Garfield film, this time with Lana Turner.

To my eyes, the most beautiful actresses are: [insert really long and evolving list of actresses]
Perhaps you'd better organise another poll for us: most beautiful actresses in a film in the Criterion Collection.
Make it fair for the girls here: most beautiful/handsome actor in a film in the Criterion Collection.
For what it's worth: Maggie Cheung
And I guess Alain Delon

A big +1 for Double Indemnity. Great film. The Masters of Cinema package is really good. Get it with The Lost Weekend

Or guys .... and unsurprisingly I'd say Fassbender (this is where everyone goes 'yeah, ok, we get it', but I don't care )

Alright guys, these are the ones I've settled on getting:
  • Force Of Evil
  • Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
  • Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
  • Scarlet Street
  • Secret Beyond The Door
  • Stranger

What do you guys think of these?
  • Dark Mirror
  • Strange Love Of Martha Ivers

Ok, nice to see that, I was worried that it was only me!...not that there'd be anything wrong with whatever...

Wow, what you can learn from a google-search! The individual who directed both "Amelie" and the wonderful "A Very Long Engagement" also directed "Alien Resurrection". Did he lose a bet?
