Went ahead and ordered Laura, The Maltese Falcon, and The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre.

Here's to hoping for a release of The Big Sleep, but Warner Bros. is too busy re-releasing films for the umpteenth time.

Hahaha - good point
Yeah, Fassbender isn't exactly handsome, but he's got something magnetic about him. Awesome actor.
Funny that he's leading the way in male nudity in films - he's also the reason most actors would not want to do full frontal nudity.

Most handsome actor, well, obviously the man who was once in love with this beauty

...and that man is:

But few actresses looked as gorgeous as this Italian beauty:

My favorite actress, however, has always been:

Too bad Queen Margot never entered the Criterion Collection.

Yet I always felt that few, if any, continental actresses looked as stunning as:

I had no idea either..interesting that he's been talked about a bunch of times in this thread lately, in the last few days.

Sorry, should have mentioned it's Twilight Time. I'm looking forward to that release, not entirely happy they're the ones releasing it but will want it.

I'd say he is. Well, for me personally--he's the most attractive celebrity, like overall. (I said the 'yeah, we get it' part because he seems to be what I talk about most on the forum and that's the reaction I imagine there is)

  • Secret Beyond The Door
  • Stranger

What do you guys think of these?
  • Dark Mirror
  • Strange Love Of Martha Ivers
On your list, I'd say SCARLET STREET is definitely the best, followed by THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1946). They're all definitely well-worth seeing, though. DARK MIRROR is very good throughout but by the end doesn't quite seem to be as good as it started out to be.

Then there's always TOUCH OF EVIL and CAPE FEAR. I rather liked THE TRAP, as well, another rare Technicolor noir. You might enjoy Olive's so-called Film Noir box set, but the only real noir of the bunch is DARK CITY, and it's also quite good with an impressive Hollywood feature debut by Charlton Heston (great to double-bill with TOUCH OF EVIL for people used to BEN-HUR and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS). Also on Blu is the excellent KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL, and of course INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS is really a noir thriller even if it's considered sci-fi. If you like FORCE OF EVIL, then I'd strongly recommend BODY AND SOUL, which I think is even better. And back to Criterion, THE KILLING disc includes KILLER'S KISS, which I prefer, and you could probably call SHOCK CORRIDOR and especially THE NAKED KISS late noirs.

One of my favorite noirs, which I'm hoping either Fox or Twilight Time will come out with, is NIGHTMARE ALLEY. I also wish VIOLENT SATURDAY would be upgraded to Blu-ray, as it's another overlooked Technicolor (and scope) noir that's very well done. Others on DVD only so far that are must-sees include MURDER MY SWEET, LADY IN THE LAKE, and the weird noir comedy HIS KIND OF WOMAN, among many others.

EDIT: I just researched the Statistics page and answered my own question. The Dark Knight is, by far, the most popular movie that appears in the most collections on this site. Batman Begins is second place. Inception is not far behind. Wow, the kids love their Christopher Nolan.
Without a doubt it was. It is why I bought a DVD Player. I remember, back in 1999 I had just gotten my first bonus check from my first REAL job at a marketing company. The first thing I needed to buy was a DVD player. A DVD player to hook up to my non-Svideo crappy brand Zenith TV (a whole 27"!!)

I went to one of the biggest electronics retailers in BC at the time, A&B sound and snagged myself a brand new Toshiba dual disc DVD player. I think I still have the receipt, that thing pushed over $600 after taxes. $600!!! Just last week I was complaining about spending $50 to get a blu ray player that also had a huge selection of streaming video on it.

But with all that I went through to get the DVD player, all that money spent... The damn place, and everywhere around, were sold out of The Matrix.

Can you even imagine anyone producing so small a run of a smash hit movie and running out of stock today?! Seriously, that would be like then shorting The Dark Knight =\

That said, I still haven't replaced my Batman Begins HDDVD. It, unlike many HDDVDs, has TrueHD and a stellar picture, plus I'm quite happy with my HD-A30 player, slow as it may be... Maybe one day I'll phase out my HDDVD films, but for now, I'll hang on to my 2 HDDVD players and my Xbox add-on

I still am confused why DVD had no rivals, and why the hell there had to be with Blu and HDDVD (which I'll still never buy being 'better'..). Maybe format fights skip a generation? Will the 4K video just be on blu ray with no questions asked? Then after that, will we even be purchasing physical media? =\

I hope that nobody takes offense right now while I'm wearing an Olive Films team jersey while sitting on the Criterion Collection side of the bleachers, but the Olive release of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is one of the top five most worthwhile Blu-rays that I own.

On the most attractive actress/actor subject...

pro-bassoonist beat me to it. Monica Vitti for the win. Modesty Blaise on Criterion someday in a perfect world? That would be fun.
I'd also go for some Isabelle Adjani movies on Criterion. She is beautiful in Herzog's Nosferatu, and she is also a big reason why I will pull the trigger on a pre-order of the Twilight Time release of The Driver.

Actor? I'm comfortable enough in my masculinity to say Alain Delon.
Now, it's worth noting that Le Samourai is my all-time favorite film in part for the reason that all of the actresses who appear in that film are stunning. The hatcheck girl who appears in the movie for about thirty seconds total, is just incredible.

Great list.
Neo Noir films can be a lot of fun or they can be heavy handed and slavish.
You've got John Dahl's The Last Seduction, but you also want his Red Rock West.
I also love Peter Medak's Romeo is Bleeding, starring Gary Oldman.
Also, special love for Steven Soderbergh's Underneath, starring Peter Gallagher.
The 90s were great for Neo Noir
Frankly, noir doesn't get better than this:

Not such a bad choice, but I've got bad news for you - I think he'd be a "top"
Maybe this is another poll topic for Shell to put together: which actor or actress in the Criterion Collection would you turn gay for?
I said Alain Delon was the most handsome actor in the collection, but I don't think I'd turn gay for him - I don't think he'd hug me afterwards

Great list. I'd add Asphalt Jungle, Out of the Past and Where the Sidewalk Ends (not to mention most of the titles in Warner's first two Noir DVD sets). Always great seeing Nightmare Alley and Scarlet Street referenced. Two of my favorites.

Here's hoping Rififi, The Killers and Night and the City (my favorite Criterion noirs) get upgrades someday.

You know what, I've never seen Red Rock West, nor the other two but I'll certainly try to find a way to see em. I've seen nearly all of Soderbergh's films exept for Schizopolis, Underneath & King of the Hill. Considering his "last film comes out on Friday, I've gotta get on that.

I guess that's the obvious choice.

How about El Hedi ben Salem in Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul?

Oildude and I have done the same thing...it's a real bummer, as I was looking forward to watching it this weekend. But on the positive side...it'll be at least $6 cheaper, when I'll likely buy it in July. The only purchases I'm willing to take a hit on (immediate gratification) in the near future is On The Waterfront (getting from B & N...store...get to use an $8 coup) and Sansho. The Brando will be a few bucks cheaper if I go the B & N route, but Amazon cheaper on the Mizo (can't use a coup...unless an unexpected 20% coup shows up by/before the release date).

On the subject of actresses, we also cannot forget about Irène Jacob (The Double Life of Véronique, Three Colors: Red).

I think we'll let Jess opine and leave it at that

As for a women of Criterion poll. Who would get nominated? The votes could be all over the place with no definitive winner.

Also...

Vivian Leigh in That Hamilton Woman.
Criterion needs to hurry up and get this one out on Blu-ray. It's an outstanding movie for so many reasons.

YES YES YES!!!

Irene is the winner for me by a mile. She just has that natural, almost innocent beauty about her. Both TDLOV bad Red display her beauty vividly.

And for guys, again, I am straight as well, however Alain Delon is someone I have a huge man crush on.
