Wife and I watched Three Colors: Blue last night and while it was good it didn't really wow us like it was hyped up on this forum. I read some background behind the movie and how different things in the movie represented a liberty or other aspects the director was trying to get across. This kinda helped but maybe I'm just not into the artsy type films. I'm going to watch White and Red and maybe it will click more.

I watched Letter Never Sent the other day and Russian propaganda aside, what a beautifully film it was. Also, I was really impressed with the cinematougraphy, with the exception of the flames overlayed within some of the shots (that was way too cheesy though I am sure, an impressive technique for back then).

Also, kind of unsettling was how "hipsterish" all of the male leads looked. On one hand, all of the beards, vintage glass frames and workwear look made it look less dated (almost very current). On the other hand, I was asking myself why all of the Williamsburg folks were speaking Russian.

Great list.
Neo Noir films can be a lot of fun or they can be heavy handed and slavish.
You've got John Dahl's The Last Seduction, but you also want his Red Rock West.
I also love Peter Medak's Romeo is Bleeding, starring Gary Oldman.
Also, special love for Steven Soderbergh's Underneath, starring Peter Gallagher.
The 90s were great for Neo Noir
Frankly, noir doesn't get better than this:
I'm also a big fan of One False Move, which i think would be considered 90's neo noir.

The Bunk,

Welcome to the site, key in your collection and avatar, man. You're a nobody without one

And yeas, Letter Never Sent is stunningly beautiful, almost Tarkovsky beautiful. I just fixed my TV settings and this is one of the prime candidates as to watch next, along with Red Desert, Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven.........

As for a women of Criterion poll. Who would get nominated? The votes could be all over the place with no definitive winner.
I guess there's just too many to choose. First world problems

I'm pretty sure I mentioned Maggie Cheung. Not a problem - she's worth mentioning twice

Trivia: did you know she's married to CCs own Olivier Assayas? I really freaking hope their kids get into movie making.

Letter Never Sent was my favorite 2012 Criterion release.

The males in that movie do all look like they're on their way to a Bon Iver concert, though.

Actually, no. They were married for about 3 years.
He's now married to Mia Hansen-Løve.
It seems Maggie Cheung has mostly retired from films. Such a shame.
Would love to see Irma Vep get a good blu-ray release.

My wife is Chinese, so I was able to break out Yi Yi in the past and her parents were able to watch it without subs...pretty cool.

Perhaps you'd better organise another poll for us: most beautiful actresses in a film in the Criterion Collection.
Make it fair for the girls here: most beautiful/handsome actor in a film in the Criterion Collection.
For what it's worth: Maggie Cheung
And I guess Alain Delon
Really fell for her in "In The Mood For Love"...those tight dresses certainly didn't hurt.

You're brave...or your OCD isn't quite as bad as mine. And I really wanted to watch it now...I think it will stay $21.99 on Amazon, so I can always pick it up after Criterion addresses the stuttering issue, if I can't wait until July.

Be strong. Deep breaths. Go to the shelf and hug a disc that may feel neglected.

Lol, yup. It is almost scary how much they look like your stereotypical hipsters. This is not a slag towards the film at all, just funny how a film almost 60 years old contains characters in it that resemble members of a subculture within modern society.

Hey there. As a HUGE champion of the Tree Colors Trilogy though not a massive fan of all things art house, here are some things to consider:

- Each of the three films were filmed by different cinemataugraphers and Krystoph gave each one a lot of artistic leeway in the filming (ultimately he has the final say and has been quoted as saying the editing process is one of his favorite when it comes to filming). I can ensure you that Blue is the most "artsy" of the three films, with White as the most "quirky" and Red as the most straightforward (just my opinion).

- While the film is fresh in your mind, now is a perfect time to dive into the supplements. I found the special features on the set made me appreciate each film much more, especially Blue. If you are strapped on time, I would recommend the "Cinema less on with KK", "Video Essay" and "Reflections on Blue documentary".

I was in your shoes once but while Blue can be difficult for some, it is also a quintessential example of a film that can stick with you and one that you learn and appreciate more of upon additional viewings.

Enjoy!

It seems not all reviewers are reporting the issue? The Beaver didn't mention it.
