I went to one of the biggest electronics retailers in BC at the time, A&B sound and snagged myself a brand new Toshiba dual disc DVD player. I think I still have the receipt, that thing pushed over $600 after taxes. $600!!! Just last week I was complaining about spending $50 to get a blu ray player that also had a huge selection of streaming video on it.

But with all that I went through to get the DVD player, all that money spent... The damn place, and everywhere around, were sold out of The Matrix.

Can you even imagine anyone producing so small a run of a smash hit movie and running out of stock todaIIIy?! Seriously, that would be like then shorting The Dark Knight =\

That said, I still haven't replaced my Batman Begins HDDVD. It, unlike many HDDVDs, has TrueHD and a stellar picture, plus I'm quite happy with my HD-A30 player, slow as it may be... Maybe one day I'll phase out my HDDVD films, but for now, I'll hang on to my 2 HDDVD players and my Xbox add-on

Well, they do say porn decided the VHS/Betamax wars and its adoption of DVD and Blu are the main reason they came out as winners.

I still am confused why DVD had no rivals, and why the hell there had to be with Blu and HDDVD (which I'll still never buy being 'better'..). Maybe format fights skip a generation? Will the 4K video just be on blu ray with no questions asked? Then after that, will we even be purchasing physical media? =\

This may sound inappropriate, but I'd go gay for Fassbender.
Oi, Zenith isn't crap. They're LG. I still have a zenith VCR from 1987 that still works. It weighs more than my TV.

It has been scanned in 4K and cleaned up in 2K, hence the cover saying "2K" only instead of 4K.

It is not the reason of the lower tier price. The reason is that it is a bare bones release, and is priced as The Organizer, The Makioka Sisters or Three Outlaw Samurai.

As for a women of Criterion poll. Who would get nominated? The votes could be all over the place with no definitive winner.
I agree with Again, but I want to add, since I'm being called upon:

Peter Tork
Burt Lancaster
Johnny Depp
Michael Palin
Michael McKean
Stephen Stills
Jean Paul Belmondo
Cary Grant
Malcolm McDowell
Max Von sydow
Steve McQueen
Micky Dolenz
Mike nesmith
Davy Jones
Ewan McGregor
Christopher Eccleston

Just off the top of my head.

My parents bought their first VCR, a Zenith, back in 1985. They still own it now, and it's still usable, although they never use it anymore. I used that VCR to record all the Miami Vice episodes when I was in middle school.

My HDTV is an LG brand and I have no complaints whatsoever. I've only had it since the beginning of December, but a handful of friends have owned LG HDTVs for years with no problems.

Would you say it was ironic? That that look like a decadent western subculture? Hipsters are all about the irony.

I inherited the VCR from my parents. Our first CDs burner was an LG. We both have LG TVs. They have a LG bd player and my DVD player I bought in 2005 from LG is still kicking despite the constant moving I did as a student. It has a huge dent in the top too.

Count me as another devotee of Kieslowski and his trilogy. In my case, Blue is my favorite, but as much because its focus on mourning and recovery is a theme I'm drawn to. Many regard it as the least accessible and -- as others have stated -- I think the other two are more accessible. Particularly with Red, that doesn't make it any less a "pretentious art film" but the narrative is more linear where Blue is more lyrical (if that makes sense) and therefore makes for a less strenuous watch.

Also, I for one never think of the European Union aspects as the driving force o the films, but more as a backdrop (much as Kieslowski's Dekalog is built around the Ten Commandments but isn't about them). I think of these as character pieces.

I can ensure you that Blue is the most "artsy" of the three films, with White as the most "quirky" and Red as the most straightforward (just my opinion).

- While the film is fresh in your mind, now is a perfect time to dive into the supplements. I found the special features on the set made me appreciate each film much more, especially Blue. If you are strapped on time, I would recommend the "Cinema less on with KK", "Video Essay" and "Reflections on Blue documentary".

I was in your shoes once but while Blue can be difficult for some, it is also a quintessential example of a film that can stick with you and one that you learn and appreciate more of upon additional viewings.

Enjoy!
Thanks for the info. I plan on watching some of the bonus features tonight so maybe it will clear up a few odds and ends. Maybe I was expecting a more exciting picture. This was more of a drama I would say.

Juliet Binoche's performance in Blue might be in my top five favs ever.

Glad so many people like the Three Colors trilogy. Makes me more excited to pick it up soon.

If Eraserhead is one of the titles announced, count me in.

I need more Cronenberg. Wasn't Scanners believed to be a title in the hint drawing for this year? Hopefully that is released soon.

Agreed. I'll just add that you'll probably pick up more on a second viewing with Blue than with the other two films due to its quiet, introspective nature. One can see how a contingency has been forming over time recognizing it as the high-mark of the trilogy, but I still give that to Red, which is a most beautiful - yet unfortunate - cap to Kieslowski's filmography.

Do so. Even with the unfortunate framing issue on Blue this is one of the very best sets that Criterion has released, whether judging by film(s) or by accompanying extras. I would have no qualms paying MSRP for the Three Colors trilogy - fortunately we don't have to!

Scanners appears to be one of the easier hints from the New Year drawing. Speculation has arisen that since it wasn't announced the same time as the upgrade of Naked Lunch - another easy hint from the drawing - there may be a boxset of sorts of Cronenberg's early films coming, as Criterion has been hinted at as having their rights. *This is just speculation* though...Scanners could just as easily be announced on its own, the holdup due to gathering extras and/or a myriad other things.

Man, we need Criterion to release The Dekalog already. I have never seen it and I really do not want to order the Facets set in case this comes out.

If you buy the Facets, then within a month Criterion will announce it. I daresay it is your DUTY to consign yourself to a needless double dip for the sake of this community! I would throw myself on that grenade but I already own the set (and the two extended episodes on Kino) so the jinx factor won't work.

I had to see a t&@$&ted version just to see it. The import was too expensive.

Anyways I just saw Body Double, holy crap! Flaws and all I think it would fit nicely in the collection as well as the underrated Femme Fatale
