Just finished The 39 Steps. Wow! What a fantastic film.

It's a lot better than The Man Who Knew Too Much, in my opinion. Robert Donat was great. Maybe it's just me, but he looks so much like Charlie Chaplin, in my opinion.

I would definitely recommend it, as it has a nice blend of mystery and humor all wrapped in one. Looking forward to watching The Lady Vanishes, as it's the only Hitchcock Criterion I haven't seen yet

Hopefully we see more Hitchcock in the Criterion line-up soon.

Just off the top of my head.
How close was Peter Lorre to making the cut?

Particularly with Red, that doesn't make it any less a "pretentious art film" but the narrative is more linear where Blue is more lyrical (if that makes sense) and therefore makes for a less strenuous watch.

Also, I for one never think of the European Union aspects as the driving force o the films, but more as a backdrop (much as Kieslowski's Dekalog is built around the Ten Commandments but isn't about them). I think of these as character pieces.
I've only seen Blue so far, but that was my feeling too.

And actually I was thinking of All That Heaven Allows. Now that would be a great upgrade to blu.

I hear ya Shell...but the fact that two different reviewers from two different organizations have reported the same identical issue...chances are decent that it's a widespread issue.

Please let me/us know if your copy exhibits the stuttering issue...I will gladly eat crow and re-order mine!

As it released today...anyone that braved ordering it, please let us know as well.

Where is it supposed to skip? I can put the disc in quick and look for the spot.

I'm more than likely going to watch The Lady Vanishes, so let me know!

Edit: I see the time

Quote:
Starting at around 00.36.00, for approximately 28 seconds it looks like the data on the disc becomes extremely difficult to read and the film essentially begins stuttering. However, the sound does not appear to be affected. After the aforementioned 28 seconds, everything goes back to normal.
Let me check it out.

Alright folks, I just threw in my The Ballad Of Narayama disc and I can attest that there is an error from approximately 00:36:00-00:36:28.

I rewinded it a few seconds to 00:39:55. It starts off with a Japanese man running and it eventually cuts to a scene with an orchid of maple leaves. At the start of the maple leaves clip, everything goes into a slow motion / stuttering effect. The song lyrics that appear in the captions on the screen are crystal clear and the coloring and everything else seems to be okay, but it just drags on for approximately 28 seconds before resuming at a normal pace.

Hope that helps

I would still recommend buying it now because when Criterion decides to correct this issue (if they ever do), then you're looking at a $10 gift certificate. There's a possibility that if you order it post-correcting that you will still get a faulty disc.

Thanks...that's very nice of you!

According to Pro-B...it starts around the 36 minute mark and stutters for around 20-30 seconds. I believe someone said it was during a scene where you see the camera panning through the trees.

Thanks again...let us know...

I agreed with you entirely. I would like to add that Irene Jacobs is one of the most beautiful French actresses I have seen in French cinema. It's her beauty and acting that also makes Red and The Double Life of Veronique the two greatest Kieslowski films.

Not sure where else to ask this:

Anyone know if Netflix offers the Criterion Collection or earlier Blu-ray release for Godzilla (1954)?

I want to add my own praise to all the Irene Jacob love and also add: I saw her first!
Red is also my favourite of the Three Colours films, but I also love her in The Double Life of Veronique.
Have people been watching the video interviews with her in the supplements for those films? She's still stunning. She's like fine wine
I was always a fan of Blue, but after watching it a couple of times recently, my estimation of it has only increased. Juliette Binoche is an extraordinary actress. Very powerful film.
I like White, but it has never really matched the other two films for me. Having said that, I know a couple of people who rate it higher than the other two.
I recently hosted an "Epic Criterion" day for a few of my film-buff friends where we watched the whole of Fanny and Alexander. I'm now organising another one where the choices will be between the Three Colours trilogy and Carlos. Can't go wrong

Dammit, I own them, but I kept hoping they'd get off their butts and get the other 2 on blu-ray. Looks like I have to grab the BFI discs now.
