I think there was an Italian DVD with the original "festival" cut of the film, which was about 150 minutes long. Would love an opportunity to see this version.
I've got a region 4 DVD of the theatrical cut and I've got the region A blu-ray with the so-called Director's cut. I like both cuts, which is why I'm keeping my DVD.

I absolutely loved both and I was wondering if Days of Heaven is worth a blind buy for this seemingly classic and beautiful film on Blu-ray. I was also wondering if it is worth it to pick up The New World becuase the Blu Ray is very reasonable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Sorry if I am going off topic,

Silent.
Welcome to the site. Yess they're all worth worth a buy. Sorry to be concise, but the Soderbergh marathon must continue

Paris, Texas is remarkable on Blu-ray. I just finished watching this, and it's the clearest improvement of Blu-ray over DVD that I have noticed to date. The scenery of the remote southwest is so beautiful in this edition. It goes without saying, of course, that I could watch Natassja Kinski all day.

I always get emotional at the conclusion of Paris, Texas, and tonight was no exception. It's a wonderful film, through and through.

I wonder if the Wim Wenders film, Until the End of the World, will ever be picked up by Criterion. I've never seen that film, but I would blind-buy a Blu-ray, because the soundtrack CD was such a big part of my life when I was in college. R.E.M., Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, U2, and all the other bands had some amazing off-the-beaten-path tunes on that CD.

Isn't there a Wim Wenders box set in the works? His road films, I believe.

Leonard Cohen's soundtrack adds an extra dimension to that film. I would love to see it on blu as well.

Rich, yes, I did. My impression is that they were not aware of the issue. You will have to wait and see what they decide to do. I don't have any additional info to share with you.

MOC typically region codes their discs when Criterion has the N.A. rights so you're probably OK. You're right though, it's a fantastic package.

Off-topic: I'm pretty excited about the release of The Thief of Bagdad.
I've never seen it, but I've been on a big silent film kick over the last 12 months, so blind-buying this is a no-brainer. Can't wait. (Although I will wait until the price drops a little )

Yeah, I remember that being released. The problem I have with DVDs (and I too am in Australia, so we're talking PAL) is that the audio speed-up has always been a source of irritation, but now I've found 1080p Blu-rays, I find it hard to go back to the pitch distortion with getting seriously distracted.

Oh definitely. Its a catalogue release that will benefit alot on blu ray. When the day comes, it won't be the film we all remember. Well except Tarantino, that guy's got a print of the film.

Is there a chance that Criterion could release The Hunger, starring David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve?

I just finished watching the Top Gun Blu-ray, and remembered this earlier Tony Scott flick.

Criterion could do well with a souped-up edition of The Hunger. A supplement featuring Peter Murphy and Bauhaus, perhaps...

My daughters collect Monster High dolls, and they recently released Catrine Demew, a play on Deneuve's role in The Hunger, which I am now incredibly excited about seeing due to me falling in love with Deneuve in Last metro. Seems like criterion will risk horror, but won't touch anything animated.

Oooh, can you imagine a bill plympton brakhage-esque set?!

I need more Cronenberg. Wasn't Scanners believed to be a title in the hint drawing for this year? Hopefully that is released soon.

I just watched Blue, knowing nothing more than the fact that the colors play a role into the themes of the films. I did NOT know...

[Show spoiler]that the damn movie would start introducing and then KILLING her 5 year old daughter. The violence and the screaming after the car crash cemented my tears immediately and caused me to relate instantly with Julie, even though I'm still on the fence about Binoche as an actress/person (yes, sometimes it's tough to separate them for me).

But throughout, I felt her pain and struggle, I respected her strength, as I wouldn't hesitate to polish myself off if my wife and daughters died, I have but my sister left and, sadly, that's not enough to keep me going after the only things that matter in my world were taken from me. She had very few friends, her mother was unable to remember her, and she wasn't the most welcoming of people, yet STILL I felt such compassion towards her, and such a bond. She was brilliant, and beautiful, in the role.

I do remember laughing when I looked back on the movie poster on IMDB: "Mysterious... SEXY!"

What the what? Really? Powerful, moving, heartbreakingly honest... SURE, but sexy just seems silly. Basically, they seem like buzz worlds to try selling a more art house movie to the public.

Needles to say: BRILLIANT. Loved it. Every minute, even if they really rammed the OMG IT IS BLUIUUUUUIE!!!!! Theme down our throats. Over. And over. And over.

And what the crap is with the mice?! Clearly it has specific meaning, but *I* don't get it. Poor things. If anyone know how rodent handle their young, you know that those babies likely died after the filming ended.

I own 2 lg TVs and 2 LG blu ray players that I'm happy with. Doesn't meant that, as a company, they didn't produce shoddy workmanship along with the majority of tech companies in the late 90s, though. Hey, look at the bears. Are they the same team that went to the Super Bowl when I was a kid? Or the Bulls? Companies change, and just because they made good quality stuff in the 80s and are generally improving now (though they sell the majority of the budget priced products, and seem to have the majority of the mechanical complaints outside of Samsung) doesn't mean that the 90s saw them producing that quality. I had a zenith tv and VCR that were both terrible. Not just from a build quality standpoint, but that was an issue as well, but from PQ standpoint. I didn't know better when I bought it then, but looking at equivalently priced TVs at the time after the fact, I realized how crappy my zenith stuff was.
