A copy of this can be found on DVD for very cheaply.

Have you tried your local library? I've checked out a couple of the discs from our system (though it made me laugh when the clerk said she couldn't find some of them because they were "lost").

The Facets Video set released domestically is fairly expensive - not necessarily for the content, maybe, but perhaps moreso than one would want to today for its (standard def) presentation. Though they're said to be inferior to the Facets set, I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on the Artificial Eye DVD sets released in the UK for considerably cheaper.

But this rumor of a Criterion release intrigues me.

Hey,

I am wondering if you can expan ethos more. Are you inferring that Binoche is not a good person (in person) or typically you do not feel she is agood actor?

Not trying to bait you into a debate, just wondering if you could expand on this more. For the record, I think Binoche is a great actress but have no idea what her public persona is like.

Has everyone seen Criterion's facebook page clip of Peter Sellers performing "A Hard Day's Night" as Richard III?

Enjoy.

I tend to lump Breathless in with Jean-Pierre Melville's early gangster films (Le Doulos, etc.). This makes no sense, aside from the fact that I purchased the DVDs around the same time, when I was in a mad rush to buy French crime films from that era.

The movie that I have seen more than four times so far is Vivre sa Vie. I think it is very interesting how Godard's film is told in chapters. The use of shadows and odd angles are great too. Overall, there is more thought in the narrative of Vivre sa Vie than his other films. Also I like the fact that Anna Karina is the main protagonist.

I think sometimes the "chaotic insanity" in his later films work well, for example Pierrot Le Fou. It is a bit whimsical, surreal but the imagery is fantastic. I love the color scheme. Pierrot Le Fou is a boiling pot of genres.
I like Pierrot Le Fou, because the sheer charisma of Belmondo and Karina pull it through. I love the scene where they are in the car, and Belmondo breaks down the fourth wall by talking to the audience.

Vivre sa Vie is a beautifully majestic film, despite the downward spiral of the subject matter. I should have included it in my list of priority upgrades, because it's cheap around here, and I'll probably buy it soon if I get another B&N coupon.

Weekend, however, is another story. I won't say that I disliked Weekend, because I didn't, but it's not one of the Criterion DVDs that I'm in a big hurry to upgrade. (Sort of like Louis Malle's Black Moon).

Sophie Marceau was in Lost & Found with David Spade. I used to own this on DVD, and, in truth, I wish that I still owned it. It was one of the DVDs that was destroyed in the 2009 flood that wrecked my apartment.

If you've never heard of Lost & Found, I'll go ahead and ruin the suspense. That film probably won't be appearing as a Criterion title. It's right good fun, though.

I get my Sophie Marceau fix these days from watching The World is Not Enough. (This reminds me... Tuesday, February 12 will be a non-Criterion purchase day for me, since Skyfall lands that day.)

Not far removed from Sophie Marceau....

I am hoping that Terrence Malick's upcoming film, To The Wonder, sees a Criterion release, because that will mark the Criterion debut of Olga Kurylenko, who wins my vote for most beautiful actress of the 2000s.
(I've given up hope that Hitman will be picked up as a Criterion title.)

Could not agree with you more about Pierrot Le Fou and Vivre sa Vie (especially "beautifully majestic")

The other Godard films I have seen are Alphaville, A Woman is a Woman, Contempt, and Band of Outsiders. I have not seen Weekend. At one point I was going to blind buy it. After your comment, I will rent it from netflix first.

Band of Outsiders is my second favorite Godard flick after Breathless. I suspect that John Hughes was influenced by this movie when he made Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The mannerisms and dress style of the three characters from both movies are strangely similar.

Vivre sa Vie...

Yes, I shall upgrade this to Blu-ray in the not-too-distant future.

Thank you for posting these!

I'm not a huge fan of the cardboard slide-out Criterion cases, but I'll conceded that it's probably better than the alternative when it comes to multiple-disc packages. This one looks good.

Since On the Waterfront is an American film, I expect that Best Buy will probably have it on sale for a few dollars less than one can find it at most stores.

You are very welcome. The booklet is rather big/thick. A normal case would not have worked.

Regarding the film, that was probably the most beautiful part in the movie.

[Show spoiler]The children's story at the end of the film really was something special. It really helped explain to the viewer and to Veronique how she had a special connection with Weronika. They were both born on the same day, but in different cities, yet they had a mysterious special connection with one another. The fact that Alexandre had two marionettes was interesting, as well. When one "falls" and gets "damaged" like Weronika did, then he can use the other one, or Veronique. It was truly a great symbol for these two women.

Throughout the film, both girls felt that they were not alone in the world. When Veronique sees the performance at the school for the first time, I feel like it showed how Weronika collapsed through the use of the marionettes. Weronika had a heart condition and through the act of "transforming into a butterfly", she was free of her disease and she was also feel of this feeling of not being alone that has been with her for a while.

Not sure if that is the right analysis, but that's how it appeared to me

Thank you for clarifying and thank you
Oh yeah, there are fascinating metaphysics going on where I feel like ANY other film would have come short. Few filmmakers can imbue the themes of "interconnectedness and chance" with such grace and intelligence. Kieslowski pulls this off so effortlessly. To think he made the Decalogue, Three Colors and Double Life within a span of six years or so BLOWS MY MIND.

As much as I love a film like Cloud Atlas it's certainly not a film that expresses the same themes with any "depth." which is no slap in the face to that film, I think The Wachowskis/Tom Tykkwer knew exactly what they were trying to accomplish and did so in spades (spectacle and technical wonder).

I'm currently studying Civil Engineering, but as soon as I finish this year, I will be looking into film schools. I'm fascinated with all of the behind the scenes aspects: camera placement, movement, film editing, sound mixing...but hopefully I will get into film editing.

Alright folks, I've asked this once and I'll ask it again.

What is up with Eclipse Series 13: Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women? It appears to be $80-$120+ everywhere and it isn't even listed as OOP.

Film seems more up your alley

When I was a hardcore gamer nerd, I used to record video game footage and edit it. It was ridiculously fun and I learned a lot. From effects, to making montages, etc., it was great.

Hopefully we'll see The Decalogue on Blu-ray soon?

I really reccomend both Weekend and 2 or 3 things I know about her. Those are probably the two most mindbending early Godard films and probably his most politically charged too.

I'm no expert on late Godard, so one of these days I've got to fix that. Also, a crazy few consider 'late' Godard the best (as crazy as that sounds).

I'm sure my professors will give me automatic Fs when they hear this, but studying Engineering gave me quite a bit of free time to see two or three films per day and I dove into soooooo many classic films in this time. College is truly the place where you discover what you love.

I figure my know how on Math, Physics and design will give me an interesting slant when it comes to film. As a matter of fact Shane Carruth has been able to put his Engineering background to great use in film and I hear his latest, Upstream Color, really knocks it out of the Park.

Tested on PS3 - The Ballad of Narayama stutter problem is present.

It reminds of those old dual layer DVD's that would stop for a split second to switch layers. This slow-up lasts for 20 or so seconds and it's not as bad as I thought it would be at all.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I pick my classes and the times and days I go so I typically have classes 2 days a week for about 5-6 hours and then I'm off the rest.

Same here. A couple school days, a couple work days and quite a bit of free time. Well, less this semester, but damn do I ever have fond memories of cruising through undergrad work then checking out a couple foreign flicks. It was the life.

As far as that Mizoguchi, I'm regretting that I hesitated on pulling the trigger on three eclipse sets during the 50% off/2 for 3 sale. Ive been quite stunned by his 50's work and would love to see them.
