As far as that Mizoguchi, I'm regretting that I hesitated on pulling the trigger on three eclipse sets during the 50% off/2 for 3 sale. Ive been quite stunned by his 50's work and would love to see them.
I did all of my gen eds during my freshman year and now I'm stuck taking freshman filler courses due to the major courses that I need not being available. I have to meet with my advisor next week to see if I'm on the right track because I feel like I'm getting screwed.

On a side note, during the next Barnes 'N Noble sale, I'm going to try to buy some Eclipse sets.

I feel your pain. They definitely like throwing every obstacle humanly possible at you. Adding prerequisites to classes, prerequisites for graduation....

I've been eyeing the Mizoguchi, Kurosawa and Oshima sets for quite some time. It would be a hell of a score to be able to find these used at a better price point.

Thanks Cinemach! Actually just noting that Olive Films are releasing Beyond the Clouds (DVD) on the 26th listed on Amazon at $24.99. Tough decision, as I haven't even considered purchasing DVD for a very long time now. A tougher decision is the $90.00 Amazon pop for the Decalogue DVD, for the same reason. Quick aside, in the 'now I've seen it all department' got briefly excited when I saw the same Facets release listed at Amazon.uk for 30 pounds. Turned out to be a third-party seller with a 'used-acceptable' listing; a 'used-like new' copy is going for 198 quid!!

Guess there's no way of tracking down the Criterion rumors. What a spectacular release that could be!

I need 120 credits to graduate. This is broken up into 30 credits for the major, 18 credits for the minor, 33 credits for the gen eds (it's usually 39 but because my degree doesn't require foreign language, I only need 33), and 39 credits of electives. I only have 82 out of 120 credits. I should have all of my major requirements done after this semester, but I can't take the final two courses that I need. One is rarely offered so everybody signs up and the professor won't give out permission numbers. I can't take the other one without taking the rare one first, as it's a pre-requisite. So I'm basically screwed. I was going to minor in Digital Forensics but the way the classes must be taken are weird. First one in the summer, second in the fall, third in the spring, fourth in the fall. Plus it's more about building a computer than actually testing things. Therefore, I decided to do psychology, but I haven't declared it yet, so I need 15 credits to complete that.

As far as Eclipse goes, I don't know which ones appeal to me the most yet, as I haven't done much research, but hopefully I'll figure out soon.

That's the reasonable way to do it... I make the terrible decisions to have back-to-back classes during a 48 hour period of the week and become way too exhausted from it as a result.

Edit: Ok, I read that incorrectly..you aren't taking 2 days off, you're taking 2 days of them......

The two Akira Kurosawa Eclipse sets are both marvelous. One Wonderful Sunday is an emotional tour-de-force.

I am really loving the When Horror Came To Shochiku set right now, though. The Living Skeleton is a fine piece of J-horror, and Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell is just...just incredible.

Aww man that sucks

Freshman year I took classes 5 days a week, so a typical day MWF was 9-12, and a typical TTH was 8-2. Talk about overbearing.

Yours sound short-ish if you're done so soon....mine tend to be 3 to 3 1/2 hours each, so with a wait in between usually, I'm never done in 5-ish hours....tends to be the whole day....which is why I think of it as my 'marathon' of classes, when they're all back-to-back.

I loved those two, but I wasn't a big fan of the other two films....still a very fun set, though.

That sounds a lot like where I was 20 years or so ago. Sadly, I never went to school to study film, but to this day, film making still fascinates me.

I thought that Genocide was pretty innovative and rather ambitious for its time. The X from Outer Space was a fun popcorn movie with a couple of actresses that were good eye candy.

The Eclipse set of Larisa Shepitko's movies looks amazing. That will probably be my next Eclipse purchase.

The same. I specialized in Molecular Genetics early in college, but had an epiphany and realized that I disliked laboratory work. I branched off into environmental biology shortly before graduation, and that's where I ended up. I've worked for government in environmental enforcement for the past 16 years. It's not as fascinating as filmmaking would probably be, but it's a good gig that gives me plenty of time off to run my ultramarathon races and such.

Any profession that you choose will be what you make of it. Akira Kurosawa became burned out and tried to commit suicide at one point, but there are several garbage collectors who have fun at their jobs every day.

Like others here, I also became immersed in movies during college, although I spent just as much time listening to great music and going to concerts. College was just a great time for the exchange of ideas in general.

I never stopped collecting great movies, but I am experiencing the movie preoccupation again right now, of course, as I spend my minor midlife crisis getting into the world of Blu-rays. It's fun. I also needed some down time from my running to let an injury heal. As spring kicks into gear, though, I'll be spending a lot more time outdoors.

Can't agree more with this. I'd say 4 out of the 5 films are better than his mainline released films.

A few pages back I mentioned that Maggie Cheung was the most beautiful woman in the Criterion Collection.
I just wanted to say, I put on In The Mood For Love late last night for a few scenes and I'm happy to confirm that I was correct: she is the most beautiful in the Collection.
That's not to say that the other actresses mentioned aren't gorgeous, but I just wanted everyone to be clear on the facts.

Yep. Sometimes 4 year plans start with a certain freshman class. For example my cousin started school in 07 but the freshman class it was geared towards started in 05/06, so it took him much longer to graduate because he was too late for one set of courses and too early for another.

Anyways, I hear the Nikkatsu Noir is the most accessible one, but I still haven't dove in I'm still trying to watch all my Christmas blind buys.

There's no doubt about it, I'm getting this as soon as a sale hits. The two Oshima films have really stuck with me. As a matter of fact ITROTS is a masterpiece, even if it's too much for some. I find it's sociological take fascinating, as well as how deep it dives into the human desire for more.

I also think Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is excellent. Oshima brings out the repressed sexuality in what would otherwise be a conventional POW narrative. Which is vital because the film is about depraved, misguided masculinity resulting in annihilation. I can certainly see why people think it's flawed, but the subtext, the flashbacks, and the score create a completely memorable and enriching experience.

Same here. There was one art house in San Jose at the time. I remember many Friday nights sitting in the theater watching Fellini, Kurosawa or Bergman with about 15 people. When the movie ended I would walk outside and see SJ State students lined up around the block waiting to see Rocky Horror Picture Show. That's how the theater made its money so the owner could show the kind of films he really wanted to show.

The fact that so many of those films are available to me in the Criterion collection is a great joy in my life.
