Yeah, I felt this was the case too.

Why on Earth would they address it to the attention of Jean Gabin when he's been dead since 1976? Maybe they were trying to be funny with them

That's the real answer, methinks. My spider-sense goes into overdrive whenever I see any Criterion Facebook photo that could be construed as a hint, though.

Thanks Pro-B! I've seen her in Blue and heartily agree with you. Never seen Lovers On The Bridge, but just found out that I can stream it on Netflix.

Quick aside, in the 'now I've seen it all department' got briefly excited when I saw the same Facets release listed at Amazon.uk for 30 pounds. Turned out to be a third-party seller with a 'used-acceptable' listing; a 'used-like new' copy is going for 198 quid!!

Guess there's no way of tracking down the Criterion rumors. What a spectacular release that could be!

Feeding time...?
If you really want this DVD (or any Olive/Kino film)...Import CDs is your best friend. It's available for $14.99 right now.

That's not to say that the other actresses mentioned aren't gorgeous, but I just wanted everyone to be clear on the facts.
I told you...you wouldn't listen to me!

I'd like to see more of his films...I'll take that suggestion. As for Binoche, interestingly I'd seen some of her films (including Blue), but it wasn't until Certified Copy that I really loved her...something about the way her performance felt so natural, as if she wasn't acting at all, really impressed me.

Binoche is wonderful in this. Spent a happy sunny few moments a couple of years back just sitting in one of the Pont-Neuf alcoves thinking about her character. Love to have a blu up-date of this film. As far as best performance, I'd still be torn between her interplay with Daniel Day Lewis in 'Unbearable Lightness of Being' and her work in Horseman on the Roof where I was first hopelessly smitten...

That makes sense...I was confused there. I thought: "I've seen this twice, or was I imagining it?"

Sophie Marceau as a amazing career but it's not well known outside of the French speaking world. In general I don't think many of them come with English subs so they are not release outside of French speaking countries much

I can hope and dream that Pépé Le Moko and Touchez Pas Au Grisbi will see the light of day on Blu-ray at some point.

I'm going to shell out for the Olive Films release of Les Misérables, starring Jean Gabin, in the near future, but I will not watch it until I am finished reading Victor Hugo's novel. (I started reading the novel at the end of November, but put it down when I purchased my Blu-ray player and have only been revisiting it sporadically to read a few chapters at a time!)
In my own very humble opinion he was and still is the best Jean Valjean ever put on screen,

I'm not really collecting Criterion movies as much as I'm just picking up movies I want (as it's the only way to get them). My next pick will probably be The Blob.
THose are what I would call "safe" Criterion

If you want to start exploring a little more but still remain safe, I recommend Yojimbo or Seven Samurai. Two great movies to start exploring world cinema but still easy enough to digest so to speak

Actually, this isn't entirely true Pat

There are only a few of her early (big) films that are not subtitled in English, most notably Fanfan, L'étudiante, and the La Boum films.

As for nice English-friendly releases and films, I would suggest tracking some of these down. Her second film with Zulawski, in particular, is outstanding:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This is also a great thriller with an outstanding finale:

Pro-B

p.s. Polly Maggoo I included as it was mentioned above, but
Delphine Seyrig is practically non-existent there. You are not missing anything

Thanks Rkish. Time to look them up. Are they generally comparable to Amazon in terms of dependability, delivery times, customer support, care in packaging etc.?

Not really (I mean, I don't think many places can compete with Amazon because of their size, especially with customer support)...however, I personally have found ImportCds rather dependable...I've never had a problem with them...have taken advantage of some excellent prices from them...and received everything within a week usually. I'd recommend them.

There always great posters in the criterion thread. I have a thread going of favorite film scores, soundtracks and composers. Many criterion films have fantastic film scores. So feel free to contribute.

Days of Heaven by Ennio Morricone is just sublime.
