Oh, I have a lot more Criterions on DVD. I've only been collecting Blu-rays for a few months.

Just counted. I have 65 Criterions on DVD and 26 Criterions on Blu-ray.

My DVD collection keeps growing smaller as I sell off DVDs to make room for Blu-ray upgrades, so most of the Criterion DVDs I have left are ones that do not have available Blu-rays on these shores.

I've had Trilogy of Life sitting on my shelf two months now and just haven't found the desire to watch it after seeing Salo. I actually popped in the first disc but changed films before even starting it. Only Criterion films in my collection I haven't seen yet.

The post in between ours is a pretty good recommendation--you may want to watch Salo first, to see if it's your thing...

(sorry, I don't really mean to be dissuading you or anything)

Trilogy of Life and Salo have zero appeal to me, but that's okay. God knows I've got enough Criterions on my want list right now.

My least favorite Criterion that I've actually owned is my DVD of Slacker, although that movie does have a charm of sorts when I'm in serious 1990s college-days nostalgia mode. I'll upgrade if it ever comes out on Blu-ray.

I imagine the likelihood of FISHING WITH JOHN coming to blu is not likely. I used to have the DVD and I miss it now.

If there is a flash sale this month I'm totally going with Heaven's Gate...been on my #1 wants as of late, and Christopher Walken IMO is up there with Harry Dean Stanton. Don't care how much flak this film got...I'm going to give it a chance!!!

Do it! I really think it's a good film (just know it's veeerry indulgent). It's sad to know Walken will probably never give us another great performance, he looked absolutely clueless in Stand Up Guys

Pacino, Arkin, Walken? How had I never heard of this film...now I have to see this!!!

Thanks Abdrewes...was the movie on a whole at least worth seeing once, then maybe I'll sneak a peak!

I'm impressed that most of you seem to like so many movies in the Criterion Collection. I've been watching a lot before the upcoming sale (I should be able to finish off my rental list by then) but not nearly enough because there just aren't a large number of titles that appeal to me. I'm not sure if that means my taste is too limited or what but on the upside, at least it doesn't put a huge dent in my wallet.

Which dovetails nicely into another point I wanted to make: I hate this attitude. I mean, if you have genuinely enjoyed every single Criterion film you've seen, then that's fantastic. I haven't experienced a lot of duds (although Rashomon comes to mind) but then again, I've probably only seen a fraction compared to you and others in this thread. But in no way would I recommend just any Criterion to a friend nor would I watch one at random.

I also think the reviewers on Blu-ray.com (and elsewhere I reckon) are too kind on Criterion releases sometimes. Granted, I haven't seen the bulk of their selection so I wouldn't know for sure but I doubt every single movie deserves a 4.0 - 5.0 grade.

Anyhoo, now it's finally time for me to watch Seven Samurai, which I've been putting off for awhile because it's so damn long. Fortunately, Yojimbo helped get me back into Kurosawa after the disappointment of the aforementioned Rashomon and Sanjuro was even better than its predecessor!

Maybe I wasn't very clear with the point that I was trying to make.

All of the Criterion films are decent in some aspect. Most, if not all, are worth at least one viewing. Would I watch every single one of them again? Probably not, but from the films that I have seen they were all entertaining. Some I liked more than others, but that's the way it is with everything.

Overall, I honestly don't think that Criterion has done a bad job with the film selections for their catalogue.

The only Criterion I was left cold by was House...what a ill fitting title for the collection. But some people enjoy it so whatevs.

I think one thing you have to realize about Criterion is that they are not exclusively making the gold standard of cinema, they are more of a Noha's Ark of distributors.

I'm going to wait until Second Sight release their Heavens Gate before I decide on which one I'll buy Second Sight have proven themselves as an extremely competent studio that care very much about fans of the films they release so I suspect it might beat Criterion by including the 75 minute documentary that Criterion didn't bother to include.

I hope so too. I have a $50 certificate for Criterion.com that I've been saving for just such a sale...

I can hope and dream that Pépé Le Moko and Touchez Pas Au Grisbi will see the light of day on Blu-ray at some point.

I'm going to shell out for the Olive Films release of Les Misérables, starring Jean Gabin, in the near future, but I will not watch it until I am finished reading Victor Hugo's novel. (I started reading the novel at the end of November, but put it down when I purchased my Blu-ray player and have only been revisiting it sporadically to read a few chapters at a time!)
Yes, please!
I already have the Touchez Pas Au Grisbi DVD, which is still good, but I love it so much I'd probably upgrade.
I've been hoping to see an upgrade of Pépé Le Moko so that I could avoid getting the DVD.
Yeah, I'll probably get that Olive release of Les Misérables...
Wasn't there a suggestion that Port of Shadows might be getting upgraded? I couldn't wait myself, so I got the Studio Canal release from the UK. Very happy with it

Yikes! I've been waiting for Les Vampires to drop in price at Amazon and I see that Import CDs has it for less than $22!
I'm holding you solely responsible for my next spending spree!

This looks like it could either be the greatest film ever made or a completely disappointing waste of time. I'm too afraid to find out for certain, because I do not want to spoil the illusion.

Both actresses seem to be past their prime around the time of this movie's release...
...meaning that they are still 100 times more beautiful than most people half their age.
Basically, Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceau in the same film is pornographic.
As for being past their prime, I say they're like fine wine
