It looks like Criterion will not be releasing Friedkin's Sorcerer:

I found the film itself to be wonderful. You have these really colourful backdrops with surreal lighting and theatrical sets that sometimes get pulled apart and span around to reveal another set. It also has this kabuki narration throughout and some traditional singing/dancing. I can't think of another film I've seen that really compares (maybe certain sections of Profound Desires of the Gods), it's like going to a theatre and watching an authentic kabuki play. I was surprised to enjoy it more than the Imamura version.

Awesome. I like different things like that. I've been meaning to grab and watch the Criterion release of The Mikado, have you watched that one? If so, would it be comparable style wise?

BTW, I was getting shit at work for buying this, because it was a Japanese film from 1958. Peter Pan was more acceptable amongst men between the ages of 56-67.

Thanks. too bad we didn't discuss this in Non-Western history. We did focus quite a bit on sati, which could arguably be linked to this as a fairly unsavvy custom used agaisnt women. I know, very different practices, but both essentially are not nice towards women. I'm veering into politics so I'll shaddup.

I see the Wiki on the film itself includes reference to this as well: Men of Tohoku by Shichirō Fukazawa. Anyone read that or know where I might dig that up?

It hasn't been discussed too much. I threw in my disc to see if the error was present and I found out that it was. From the few minutes I saw, the colors looked great.

What a bummer.

I haven't seen the film, but given it's popularity, I will buy it from whatever studio releases it.

The Seventh Seal was my first Bergman, but I do like Summer Interlude the best out of what Criterion has released on BD. I dind't pick F&A because of the length.

Wish they'd hurry and release The Virgin Spring already. Also, my friend would kill for Persona. Maybe he would actually watch his Criterions if they released it!

Wow. Just...wow.

[Show spoiler]First of all, the restoration of this Blu-ray blows my old Criterion DVD away. It's a night-and-day difference. The character close-ups and the European countryside landscapes are both stunning by today's standards, and that's remarkable for this 1937 film.

La Grande Illusion (Grand Illusion) deserves all its accolades, because so few films manage to entertain the viewer with laughter and tears by way of stories that are so multi-layered. La Grande Illusion is a prison escape movie, it is an anti-war movie that also conjures an offbeat nostalgia for wartime interactions, it is an observation on class distinctions, it is an ode to well-earned friendships, it is a love story, it is a riveting adventure, and it is a fun-spirited story that inspires a handful of belly laughs.

Jean Gabin is outstanding in the movie (although I prefer his too-cool-for-school role in Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, which was filmed decades later), but Pierre Fresnay and Erich von Stroheim keep pace every step of the way. Has there ever been a more sobering scene than Erich von Stroheim clipping the geranium? Dita Parlo, of course, is beautiful in such an understated way.

I've watched La Grande Illusion a couple of times before, by way of my old Criterion DVD, but it really hit me like a gut punch tonight as I watched it in high definition for the first time.

This Blu-ray has my highest recommendation
.
It's great movie but of course in my view it's hard not to enjoy a movie with Jean Gabin

I hope that Y Tu Mama Tambien is part of the release announcement on Friday (or Monday)

that way people will stop asking for it all the time

I feel you. The Virgin Spring sounds like the best Bergman film, in my opinion.

Unfortunately I haven't seen it, but from the clips I have seen they do seem to share a very theatrical style and experience. Several others I've thought of that compare in certain aspects are the colours of Gate of Hell and Mishima, and the staging of Double Suicide.

Ha I usually get the same for buying anything B&W, old or foreign, my sister always asks me (and other family members) why I watch "weird" films like that.

Persona is one of my favorite Bergman's film. It is one of his most surreal with iconic imagery. If criterion releases it, I would be very .

The Ballad of Narayama and The Kid with a Bike showed from Amazon today. Excited to watch the former and rewatch the latter.

Also got fed tons of pancakes, sausage, bacon, biscuits, and blueberry sauce at work, so today really is Fat Tuesday.

Anyone know where I might find a print copy of the story Narayama is based on? Random question, I know, but I like reading the source material for a lot of the films I watch if they are based on literary sources. this is a folktale, so there must be a print copy somewhere. I just read The Remains of the Day yesterday. Yes, the whole thing. The running joke amongst friends is that 600 pages is only "light reading" for me, as I tend to devour books.
1) Are you interested in seeing the 83 Version afterwards? I hear it's excellent.

2) have you seen the Merchant & Ivory adaptation of Remains?

1. I will if I ever watch this one, ebooks are bloody distracting
2. yes, and I actually enjoyed it more than the novel. The novel was well written but a bit dull.

Sorry to be a broken record, but any thoughts?

I'd love if anyone had an experience they could relate here.

Thanks as usual

You sent an email to Jon Mulvaney <mulvaney@criterion.com>? He/she/it is usually very prompt with responses.

Email him a second time and he should solve your problem. I told him about my Howards End and Seventh Seal blus not working and he sent the replacements without asking for the originals. I couldn't ask for more.

I'm happy and sad at the same time. I love The Wages of Fear so much that I have always wanted to see this Sorcerer remake. It's too bad that Criterion will not be involved, but I am pleased that Sorcerer is seeing the light of day in some form or fashion.

That is bad news for me. I hope who ever distributes the movie will make Tangerine Dream's score surround sound like the Vangelis score in Blade Runner.

I made this comment at my favorite film score thread ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=214424 ) minutes ago:

Great picks. When people talk about about film scores, usually no one mentions Wendy Carlos, which surprises me. I enjoyed her work on The Shining and Clockwork Orange.

I guess now is a great time to mention Tangerine Dream's classic electronic film score Sorcerer (remake of The Wages of Fear).

Yep. I sent another email to him. My first was on the 25th of January.

Here's hoping I hear back. I was pretty detailed in my original message to him.

Thanks
