One of Lumet's that gets overlooked (imo, unfairly) is Fail Safe. I'd dearly love to see it given a restoration and BD transfer, though it may not be a candidate for Criterion's attention. (Although ...) People tend to think Kubrick's Strangelove nailed the genre, but I think Lumet's is by far the better film.

I don't think there will be a sale. Criterion doesn't want to deal with a site crash spilling into the weekend.

Wasn't the last sale (the flash one last Fall) announced at noon?

As someone mentioned, in the past the sales were announced before they started. The sale started at noon, if I remember correctly.

Right...I just checked my old emails and it was anounced the night before at 8-ish, then started at noon the day of.

That's what I thought...I remember sitting with my computer right as the sale started trying to get it to go through (although that might have been two sales ago)

To add to that, if you are too tired/lazy to read about films, I'd recommend watching the Chris Marker documentary One Day In The Life Of Andrei Arsenevich on Tarkovsky, really breaks down the recurring themes in his work and has some amazing video of his reunion with his family while exiled in Paris during his last days.

There are three different screen versions of On the Waterfront in the Criterion set, for reasons well-explained in the Blu-ray review on this site. It's definitely a gut punch as far as price goes, though.

This is not a Priority One purchase for me, but I do plan to buy it someday.

I'm with you. I will live with my DVD for now.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's announcements...hopefully some expected titles and some that come out of left field. I think we will probably get Grey Gardens finally.

I've ordered it despite the price but I've been waiting for this one for a while. I will assume however that Amazon will drop the price before release day. Just my opinion.

I've also been reading David Bordwell, the pieces I've read on Bergman, Antonioni & Nolan in the past two days have been very thought provoking.

Judging by their current Criterion prices, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm considering ordering On the Waterfront but it's $50 here in Canada! I'm wondering if its worth it, considering that the DVD is $10 and its on Netflix. Any thoughts?

I'm certainly waiting for On the Waterfront to drop.

Nearly every forum/reviewer recommends the 1.66:1 (I've only seen the movie in 1.33, so I cannot comment on which is best), so it doesn't sound like it's worth the price. Maybe they had to pay more to include all of them. Who knows? Either way, I'm only interested in the best presentation possible. I couldn't care less about having alternate versions just for the sake of it.

CC sales are great for things like this.

Be careful with this one. Scorsese's recommendation (which may have had a lot to do with Keitel, an actor who got his start with Scorcese) notwithstanding, this is a tough film to sit through. Think Se7en x 10, something like that.

I looked at my Criterion order history earlier and the sale was on Valentine's Day in 2012, but was on February 24th in 2011. I'd prefer it to be next week so we could hopefully get all the Feb titles included in the sale.
