That movie is a sweet cookie full of arsenic. You're in for a treat. Instead of popcorn, I recommend either lemonheads... Or just a bowl of lemons.

I've never seen a rumor linking Diving Bell and Criterion. It seems like one of those common wishlist titles considering it's a well regarded foreign film that's not on Blu-ray in the US. It was distributed by Miramax in the US so Lionsgate should have the rights. I can't really think of a Lionsgate-licensed Criterion release. So I personally wouldn't get my hopes up. But the movie is in desperate need of a US Blu-ray.

I must have a very narrow definition of film noir because I keep seeing movies listed as noir that I don't consider noir.

i second that! WH is one of my personal favorites. i've still got the old AE dvd (one of the reasons i went region-free many years ago), but a blu upgrade would make my day. anything connecting tarr and the criterion collection would be welcome in my book.

side note: finally sat down and watched turin horse the other night (an xmas gift from pop), and can't say that i enjoyed quite as much as tarr's earlier output. slow, repetitive sequences (i would describe the film as 'meditative'), but beautiful camera work and patented choreographed long-takes. watching this along with haneke's amour in the same week has made me dread getting old, but has forced me to address my own mortality.

This is a pretty cool article about how the artwork developed.

I'm not a big artwork on the wall kind of guy but I'd grap a print of my avatar in a second if Criterion ever offered it.

Word of advice, don't watch a film, especially a silent film, when you're tired. I've been dozing in and out
Ooooh buddy, silent cinema is great! I find silent films to be the easiest to watch when tired.

They're great for apartment dwellers who are up at 3am too.

My neighbors seem to think so anyway.

It's a brilliant film.

The city driving scene early in the film is a favorite sequence of mine. It's so...soothing and mesmerizing.

I watch this for the first time last week. Excellent stuff!

Nut sure if I would call it Noir however.

I did have the blasphemous thought that this is one modern remake I would like to see. Ryan Gosling in the lead role...It definitely applies today with this bloated image of celebrity we have and all the slimy news gossip going on.

*leaves thread before getting shot*

Thanks for that link... it was fun to re-read. I'd also love a copy of that print. A shame it isn't one of the few Criterion offers.

Hi Pro-B,
Do you think their explanation clears things up?
Your own description sounds very much like a digital problem, whereas Criterion's explanation points to an analogue problem.
It also sounds like they should have provided an explanation in the transfer section of the booklet if they were aware of this problem.

Dear Criterion,

You're starting to upset the bird. Announce this movie already.

For minimal talking, it was a fantastic, in my opinion. I'll re-watch it in the near future as I fell asleep for a small chunk from the cafeteria until he started working at the department store and then I fell back asleep to when he working at the night club. I want to say it was about 15 minutes altogether I missed.

It was a good take about how the world was changing and how everybody had to adjust. For Chaplin, he had to adjust to modernization and fitting in in the world, while Goddard had to deal with being an orphan.

I'd recommend it. It was the first film I've seen by Chaplin and I can't wait to see TGD and TGR.
Next on your silent list should be some Buster Keaton, such as The General. Kino have a large Keaton, plus the titles are available individually.

I know that these would never all be announced together, but here's my Criterion "dream month"...

Le Samourai
Bob Le Flambeur
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
Elevator to the Gallows
The Vanishing
Sullivan's Travels
The Naked Prey
Rififi

It's a moral imperative to have Elevator to the Gallows on Blu-ray at some point, so that the Miles Davis improvisational score can be heard in high definition.

These were all high on my to-buy list around the time I switched to Blu. Would love to add them.

I'd also gladly upgrade Sullivan and Rififi

That would be a dream year.

And yes, Elevator to the Gallows would be a great upgrade. If I could get only one off that list it would be a very strong contender and that's obviously saying something.

Yes, that would be quite something. But as I'm sure you already know, these two are OOP and Criterion has no plans to upgrade any OOP titles at this moment.

Bob Le Flambeur
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi

Elevator to the Gallows is great, but I enjoyed the first half more.

Hilarious side note, but did anyone see the outrageous fight that just broke out in the Tree of Life thread?

It's closed now but read it quick before it gets cleaned out. It's like Star Wars fans arguing OT vs. PT.

Makes me nervous to leave the warm and fuzzy Criterion thread.
