iScottie, I hope you get into the Kino and Olive releases, they have plenty of great releases.

I highly recommend you see Antonioni's 60's work before you see Identification. I think it's an excellent film, but it's kind of like Popping your Kubrick cherry with Eyes Wide Shut.

By the way, have you seen any Wong Kar Wai, yet? I think you would really take to his films. His films are perfect mixes of genre excitement and art house style.

Agreed on Identification...I had a very different reaction to that one, so I wouldn't recommend it as an intro either.

I myself am hugely inspired by the film...I regularly watch it every couple months.
I'm still unpacking the first half in my head, much less the second. Repeat Viewings necessary.

A boxset of Benjamin Christensen's work would be great, even as an Eclipse set, the man did a lot of Gothic type work back in the 20's with silent film...would love to see specifically Haxan and Seven Footprints to Satan. Drudge me from a curious breed....and interested in the occult I know...that and it's not even Halloween yet!

It's excellent though and it shows up on TCM pretty regularly. It's well worth a watch or five.
I will have to check it out. I just realized that we have TCM so I'm pretty excited!

I have not seen any Wong Kar Wai films, but I will have to make a mental note about that. Eyes Wide Shut is such a fantastic film. It's one of my favorites. I've only seen a couple Kubrick films, although I own them all (minus Barry Lyndon). I still need to watch 2001 and A Clockwork Orange

As far as Kino and Olive goes, I hope to purchase Scarlet Street, Secret Beyond The Door, The Stranger, and The Ultimate Buster Keaton Collection. I'd like to get all of the U.S. StudioCanal Releases, although the only ones I'm truly in dire need of wanting to see are Contempt, La Grande Illusion, and That Obscure Object Of Desire.

I'm still trying to complete all of the Criterions. I went Criterion happy last week and bought quite a bunch, but I scored a decent deal so I can't complain.

TCM is a great resource

As for Kubrick, Amazon UK has had it super cheap recently, as low as $30 if I'm not mistaken.

Also, what kind of Criterion score?

Edit: as far as nabbing other arthouse/olive fare, importcds is the cheapest way to go.

Dear Criterion obsessives:

Pretty decent deals on recent foreign language cinema at

DVDPlanet

Incindies, A Prophet, Secret in Their Eyes, Lives of Others, etc. plus cheapest Lawrence uber box price I've seen. Free shipping on orders over 35 bucks. Bear in mind this site fiddles with prices during sales.

Props to newginafets who properly posted in the deals subforum.

Great selection, great theme programming, far more regard to OAR than any other broadcasters out there and on top of everything else they've got Robert Osborne.

They've really come a long way from their 'superstation version of the late, late show' roots.

A guy listed some Criterions for pretty cheap on eBay and the bidding was getting pretty high, so I asked him if I could buy a bulk of films. I gave him my entire list of films that I was missing and he managed to have all of them except for the December 2012+ releases (to which I owned all but The Qatsi Trilogy already).

All the films ended up being $20 apiece (all are brand new, factory sealed) - even the By Brakhage and David Lean sets

Oh! Thanks for the heads-up! DVDPlanet doesn't sell used, do they?

The content is violent and degrading and there are scenes you'll wish later you had not seen:
[Show spoiler]a nun gets raped, a detective masturbates in public in front of two young girls he has been harassing.
It will leave you with an unpleasant feeling in the end (and that's putting it mildly).

I realize some may defend the film using words like "brave" and "uncompromising" to describe the directors vision or Keitel's performance. So rent it if you must. It has zero replay value in my opinion.
Ugh. I'll stick with Nic Cage hallucinating iguanas.

Wong Kar-Wai is very well represented on blu-ray, including two Criterions: Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love.
Kino have Happy Together and Fallen Angels (plus, a package of both films together).
Artificial Eye have a few good UK edition of Ashes of Time.
There are also a couple from MegaStar in Hong Kong.
Wong Kar-Wai is probably not for all tastes, so try before you buy...
Personally, I love his films and he's easily one of my favourite filmmakers. I would probably put In The Mood For Love in my all time top ten.

I tried a handful of different titles with no luck. The buy-one-get-one selection is limited.

Yeah, I tried it on a few but it didn't work. I didn't go through the full list, but looking at the first few pages of the bestselling ones, the prices were kinda high. That's a pretty decent price on those two for someone that doesn't own them, though.
