We need as many Monica Vitti movies on Blu-ray as possible. Just sayin'.

Wonder what the lag time for the Shochiku-Ozu films will be for Criterion? Some sort of book/blu-ray collection is supposed to be released (presumably in Japan) this April and Berlinale had a restored Tokyo Story showing yesterday.

Sure, but thats not the reason I watch them. I consider Antonioni to be one of the greats, on par with Hitchcock, Fellini, Kurosawa, DW Griffith....

Speaking of Antonioni, my copy of Once upon a time in Anatolia arrived I've never seen Ceylan's films, but Ive read slot about him.

I must sheepishly admit that a big reason why I enjoy L'Avventura, L'Ecclisse, and Red Desert is because of Monica Vitti. I completely agree with your thoughts about Antonioni, though! I really need to get Identification of a Woman.

Antonioni is more about the contrast between characters and the environment, the space engulfing them. Sarris' nickname for him, Antonennui, is crude but apt.

I think BFI have supplied some/all of the HD transfers for the films that they have released so far. Based on the last few BFI releases (which have been DVD sets), I would think that Criterion has at least a couple of Eclipse sets that they could release. The recent outcrop of Ozu on Hulu leads me to believe that most of the remaining films are available.

His Gangster films are coming out next month (DVD) and they've released his student films (DVD) and another set of his silents (Melodrama/DVD) within the last year.

Naruse films have also shown up recently on Hulu, so I'm hoping another DVD/BD set is on the table for release.

I posted in the KINO thread, but I haven't received any responses, so I figured I'd ask it here.

How are the Sophia Loren films?

Shell, those are very good predictions, I think your first two are almost definite...
I also think Eraserhead may finally rear its ugly head...

By the way, to anyone that lives in the Chicago area, the Music Box is having a 70mm film festival. I have posted the article below. If you have never seen a 70mm print on the big screen, you are in for a treat!! Criterion related, Playtime is being shown on the list. I know Octagon live in the area and I believe has been to the BOX before, but anyone in the area, treat yourself to an amazing experience, as the BOX has a great presentation...

The Sophia Loren films in the KINO collection are some of my favorites -- all from the brilliant filmmaker Vittorio De Sica. Marcello Mastroianni also gives great performances in each film. I like to think of them as being the work resulting from these three greats: Loren, Mastroianni, De Sica. Sophia Loren is at the center -- and she's a brilliant actress in each of these roles-- but these films have greatness all around them.

If you are a fan of some of the Italian films (or De Sica films) in the Criterion Collection, I'd imagine that these films would also worth your time. They are beautiful examples of film-making.

I went to Barnes & Noble during lunch break, since today was payday, and scored both of these for $48 total, since I also used a 20% Valentine's coupon.

I was hoping to grab 8 1/2 from the sale rack, since I saw it there last week, but it took me by surprise seeing The Seventh Seal for sale as well today. I did not want to pass up this deal. I got a lot of mileage out of the DVD editions of these movies, and I'm expecting a lot of fun times with these Blu-rays, since I've heard that the transfers are incredible for both.
As far as Fellini films go, I prefer I Vitelloni and La Dolce Vita, but those are not around on Blu-ray yet. As is, 8 1/2 is a must for the collection in any format.

Sadly, I did not have enough cash left over in my wallet to grab the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, but that will be available in stores for quite a while.

Regarding On The Waterfront.. kind of surprised the title has been stuck at about 41.00ish since end of Dec. on amazon. I would have almost thought they would have had another price drop since it is a high profile catalog title. (I totally didn't do an early pre-order on this one! lol)

Also GREATOWL Seventh Seal looks great in HD I love the FILM GRAIN on that one!

Oddly enough I saw Vertigo there several years ago though not in 70mm. Perhaps it's time to see it again.

And yeah, I love the Music Box. I don't get there as much as I used to but their midnight movie and matinee series are great.

I ordered mine on Criterion.com and it ended up being 41. with shipping. Works out better IMO because I accumulate points towards the $50. credit with them.
