YIKES...

Band is a nice upgrade, and a definite upgrade, but we knew it was coming sooner or later.
Medium Cool would have made more sense to be released last October/November, but who knows about the license.
The Daves films seem more like something Olive would be all over.
More Leigh, what someone else posted a page ago, meh....

I guess after such a good month April will be, Criterion had to tone it down a little...

I wonder if the asteroid that passed earth (or even the meteorite that blew up over Russia) is a hint to a possible Armageddon upgrade?

Criterion, you sly dogs, you get craftier and craftier with your hints

The sad part is that now Leigh has 3 blu releases and Truffaut only 2...

If they start pairing up films again maybe we will get it along with either The Elephant Man or Mulholland Drive. The 2 Delmer Daves Westerns could be the start of a series of pairings again like last year. If that is the case hopefully we will see Le Samouraï and Le silence de la mer.

Maybe not the most exciting month ever, but I'm quite happy with all these releases.

2 Classic Westerns, My favorite Godard, Medium Cool and another Mike Leigh (who is so much more exciting to me after having seen both of the previous Leigh releases).

Also, it's ridiculous that people are already pissing themselves because Eraserhead hasn't been announced yet. It's taking months not years (although since they were going to originally release it on DVD years ago, I guess it really has taken years). People need to learn at least a little patience. It will be here soon enough.

Actually - though it's not literally as dark as NAKED - LIFE IS SWEET is a pretty hard-edged film, and probably the closest in tone to that film.

I have to admit, their May titles was just one giant MEH !
Give me Foreign Correspondant , more Hitchcock, Devils Backbone, upgrade some great titles like Great Expectations, Night and the City and keep giving into the cult horror titles

I am a little bit disappointed with May's releases, but at least some films have been knocked off the list

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed...but there's a couple titles I'm interested in, which is about the same as every month, so I'm good.

Rather underwhelming month for me. Already have the Gaumont Band of Outsiders, so just getting Medium Cool.

It's nice to have another Godard, and Medium Cool looks pretty, well, cool. The westerns look great too. Appears to be a month full of minor releases, but nice minor releases for sure. Another good job by Criterion.

And probably won't mean much to compulsive buyers here, but for those who like to sample first:

Criterion + Hulu =
This Valentine’s Day weekend, we have a sweet treat for you. From today, February 14, through Monday, February 18, all of the Criterion titles streaming on Hulu Plus, available to viewers in the U.S., will be free of charge to nonsubscribers (with advertisements). It’s the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the incredible array of our movies available for instant viewing—we now have 800-plus selections, including hundreds of rare titles from around the world that have never been released on DVD or Blu-ray in the U.S. And remember that if you sign up for Hulu Plus for just $7.99 a month, you can see them all the time, commercial-free!
Wow!--Now that they've taken away the only single solitary reason I would ever conceive of subscribing to Hulu Plus in the first place, I got me a weekend to catch up viewing!
Unfortunately, I can only watch on computer desktop, as the PS3 and Viera HuluPlus apps require trial memberships, but the Safari browser seems to stream "Kuroneko" nicely. Saw Kon Ichikawa's "Princess From the Moon" was also on the list, Chaplin's "The Kid" and "The Idle Class" (think we'll get a double feature with that January Kid hint), and MAYBE I'll have enough four-day weekend left for Haxan and Phantom Carriage. Maybe.

8-1/2 was autobiographical rumination, Chien was 20's Dada, but Eraserhead (and carried over a bit into The Elephant Man and maybe bits of Dune) was Lynch's attempt to do Dream Cinema, in as neurologically literal an attempt as anyone had yet done, except maybe for Orson Welles in "The Trial".
Remember when Agent Cooper had the dream about the midget in Twin Peaks?--Yyyeah. That's whatcha got here, only nobody dreams in color. If you woke up from a nightmare recently (y'know, burrito before bed, left the electric blanket on too long, etc.), try remembering the setup of shots, or the sound and dialogue, and THEN watch the movie again and tell us if any of this looks familiar.

I really wish he did---it was the first one I watched, and have been sort of disappointed that none of the other films feel the same..

It looks like, unless June has a box set of some sort, that #666 should hit in July. Begin the blind speculation!

The only two that I'm REALLY interested in are 3:10 To Yuma and Band Of Outsiders. I was actually contemplating purchasing the DVD of BOO a few months ago, but good thing I opted out of it.

You might find this piece to be a worthwhile read

http://www.cageyfilms.com/links/eraserhead/essay/

What has always fascinated me is how Lynch masterfully instills fear, paranoia, and anxiety within the audience. I have always had an appreciation for films which "stick with you" long after the initial viewing, and each time I revisit this film I find something new.

This is probably too mainstream. But why not Boiler Room?
