Melancholia is now at $14.99, it's lowest price ever. Perhaps a good time to pick it up.

I skip most of the popular horror films these days, but I do love it when a horror film comes along that truly blows me away.

Criterion has excelled so far when it comes to underrated horror cinema.
The world really, really needs a Blu-ray transfer of Eyes Without A Face. I hope that Criterion can upgrade this one someday, because I love the DVD edition.

I agree with all three of those points. The majority of horror I like would be older films. These days, there are plenty that come along that I like, but definitely all unconventional, non-popular ones..... aaand Eyes without a face is definitely one of my most wanted upgrades.

I've only seen Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.

I own Elephant Man, Twin Peaks Series, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVDs, as well as the Blue Velvet, Dune, Inland Empire, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive Blu-rays, but I never got around to watching them.

Wild At Heart is on my Wish List and I'm going to pick up Eraserhead when it's announced by Criterion.
Aaahh, Twin Peaks, it starts off very strong, in fact the Pilot is the most intriguing stretch of TV I have ever seen, but then it steadily goes downhill. It's hard to say what's worse Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me or Twin Peaks Season 2?

I would love to upgrade my DVD box set of The Val Lewton Horror Collection to Blu-ray one day, because I still believe that those films represent a pinnacle of horror cinema. This does not strike me as Criterion fare, but high definition transfers of the Val Lewton movies should be a reality someday.

After watching Barbara Steele in Fellini's 8 1/2 earlier tonight, I'd like to revisit some Mario Bava horror films. That's way over the horizon on my to-do list, but it might make for a fun weekend in October.

When I think of horror, I think of films that would either make me not sleep at night or films that would not make me stop thinking post-watching.

A lot of the horror films, especially in the 80s, in my opinion, are more cheesy thrillers than frightening films. A lot of the elements that they used back then just don't appeal to me and seem somewhat humorous. It seems like some of the horror films nowadays are reverting back to this style - see House Of The Devil, for example. Sure, the last 15 minutes were creepy, but the rest of the film was just a flop, in my opinion.

The only film that truly scared me was "The Sixth Sense". I was fascinated by ghosts and that film didn't settle right with me. I was scared a good few years after seeing it. I think the reason was because of the scenes with the ghosts visiting him at night / terrorizing him at various locations. I was new to the horror scene back then too, so that's what did it for me.

I guess if I watched "The Exorcist", I would be frightened beyond belief, but I don't think I'll be seeing it anytime soon

The Exorcist had never really frightened me. Probably because I made the mistake of watching the Leslie Nielsen takeoff, Repossessed, first.

A great "recent" horror film is the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, starring Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams (Days of Heaven). It's one of the best Blu-ray editions of a 1970s film, because the picture really brings out the best in the uneasy cinematography. It's a freakish film of the highest order.

The last 15 minutes? I thought that was where the film went downhill, I love everything that comes before it...some amazing atmosphere that I was disappointed to see go at the end.

..I've never been scared by a film, though I guess everyone has a different definition of what scared is..

Nahh, I don't think so. After all the years of it becoming so firmly established in our popular culture, a lot of the shock has worn off. I saw it for the first time last year and didn't see the big deal about it .

I honestly think that America's Most Wanted scared me more than the horror films. I used to watch it and Cops when I was very young and some of the criminals on AMW really got to me

Also, I find that films that were based on true stories have more of an impact on me for some reason

BRONSON is an odd, disconcerting, but powerful film in that vein.

I remember the first time I watched Leprechaun when I was little. That movie freaking terrified me as a child. I watched it at my friends and I had to walk home in the dark and I thought I was going to start crying because I was so scared. I remember falling asleep in my dark little room with a flashlight on cause I thought that tiny little bastard was gonna pop out of my closet and kill me.

Also Jaws has limited me to be very cautious when swimming in the ocean. I'm not good with horror movies.

I loved Bronson. This reminds me I need to rewatch it. Gotta love Tom Hardy. He had to put on so much muscle to play him.

Disagree about the Exorcist, but agree about House of The Devil. It's an exceedingly great exercise in building and sustaining atmosphere while undercutting it with humor and 80's nostalgia (a chief example being the seemingly random use of Fixx's 'One Thing Leads to Another.') Give Ti West a million dollars and he'll put most genre directors to shame. I haven't seen The Innkeepers yet though.

I remember Child's Play used to terrify me. I always thought dolls were creepy as hell. I watched it several years later and I laughed throughout

On a side note, is this February sale still possible in the next week or so?

I read Lynch on Lynch about a month ago, which I can't recommend enough. The book is sourced completely from one-on-one interviews, and covers each respective era of the visionary auteur's distinguished career.

Yeah, it takes a very skilled craftsman to pull horror off and even when it does work they are superficial thrills. One moment that nearly gives me a heart attack every time is the Dumpster scene in Mulholland Drive and the glimpses of "the blonde" on the bed. I nearly have to look away

iScottie, I can't wait till you review Salo for us, it's scary in a completely different way. I don't think it's fun for the whole family though.

Ohhh, it's definitely not, that's good advice. I think that's even more effective as horror.

Yeah, those two moments in particular were creepy for me. I'll make Salo a priority in the near future and I will definitely give you all my take on it

I've heard a lot about some of the things in the film. I guess I should have an empty stomach, huh? Sounds like the OG version of 2 girls, 1 cup
