I like the early Godard stuff a lot better. Pierrot Le Fou is great as well, then Godard sort of stepped off the Kurtz boat and his methods became unsound.

Thanks all, looks like another to put on the list, I really loved Breathless and can't wait to watch Vivre sa Vie, looks like it's right up my alley.

Coop, I have only seen Breathless and Week End, and they are completely polar opposite films, I didn't hate Week End, but I prefer the early work no doubt.

Vivre Sa Vie is, for me personally, his best film. Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou would come shortly after. Weekend definitely felt completely different to me---a transition to much more political, free-of-form films that the very early works didn't portray as much. I'd personally recommend Vivre Sa Vie over Band of Outsiders. (Now that I'm thinking about it, I actually really liked the beginning of Weekend, just not the rest.)

Speaking of Vivre sa Vie, does anyone know why Amazon has it currently under review?

Never seen it but since I love Breathless, Le Mépris and Pierrot le fou, I think it should be a safe blind buy.

Without question, it's definitely Godard's most accessible film. I was first drawn to this film during the mid 90's when I read it was a huge influence on Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, to this day it remains my favorite film of his.

Gallipoli's great! Proof that Mel Gibson was most tolerable in the eighties. Its also very heartbreaking, I'm not ashamed to say I cried during a a stretch of the film

I like my Godard "headier" ala 2 or 3 Things I know about her, Weekend & Contempt. Earlier "fun Godard" is great, too.

I haven't seen his films from the mid seventies on, but been meaning to see Histoire du Cinema, I've heard noting but glowing opinions on it

Nice packaging Pro-B...I guess a thick booklet facilitated the need for the cardboard case?

Thanks for sharing that with us!

You are welcome, rkish.

Actually, the 'booklet' is essentially a small book.

Thank you!

Also, thanks in advance for the Malick review.

Sansho the Bailiff is a Criterion title that has always intrigued me, but I never did pull the trigger when I was collecting DVDs. The Blu-ray will not be a Day One purchase for me, but I might hit it during a Barnes & Noble sale months from now.

Out of the 11 films from his 60's era I've watched, it sites somewhere around 6th or 7th. It's a good film, but not near his best work.

On the subject of Band of Outsiders...

I've posted this before, but I suspect that John Hughes was influenced by Band of Outsiders to some extent when he filmed Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There are a few offbeat similarities in mannerism between the friends in both movies during their adventures.

Apparently some guy named Hellman confirmed that "The Shooting" and "Ride In The Whirlwind" are coming out.

Is that a recent comment by the director? They've been confirmed for several years now, but (as far as I know) nothing concrete has ever materialized.

I don't think so. I was reading comments on the Facebook page and somebody said Hellman confirmed they were coming via Criterion.

Hellman (not sure if you were joking with your "some guy named Hellman" comment but he's Monty Hellman, the director of the films) announced way back in 2008 that Criterion would be releasing them. Of course, it's a big step from owning the rights to releasing the disc, so I'm hoping we don't have to wait forever for these two.

Very excited to upgrade Sansho. Mizoguchi is my favorite of the Japanese masters.

What do you guys think the next "new release" we get will be? Last year had some great choices in Le Havre, Certified Copy, and Weekend, and this year hasn't started off too shabby with Pina and The Kid with a Bike.

I think we will see The Loneliest Planet, since the DVD comes out in just over a week with no sign of blu-ray right now. I could be ecstatic if it was added to the collection.

I just watched "Last Year At Marienbad". While it was a very eerie movie with a haunting score, I wasn't too won over by it. It definitely kept my interests and kept me engrossed throughout it, but I didn't understand it too well. I feel like this is a film with a lot of underlying themes that would require an additional viewing or two after understanding it better in order to appreciate it.

The following link helps me make sense of the film somewhat, but I would prefer it if somebody here could explain it better to me.

Personally, I feel that it could have been one of many scenarios. For example, it could have been a paranormal tale of them meeting in the afterlife or something along those lines. However, I think that it was either a story that was made up by the man in order to strike up a conversation with the woman, or the entire thing was a dream sequence. I want to say it was the latter. The scenes were very dreamlike with all of the frozen party guests, there were numerous quick scene jumps to different locations / wardrobes, and the fact that not either person was quite sure what was going on.

I mean it was good, but I think I will appreciate it better after some further understanding.

I'm sort of getting tired while typing this so I apologize if my sentences aren't structured very well.

Edit: This link and this link also makes sense. I'm sorting of appreciating this film a bit more because of all the possible scenarios that this could be. Unfortunately there's nothing really set in stone to determine what is true or not. I actually thought about 2, 6, 8, 11, 12 being possibilities from the first link and I really contemplated the entire plot from the latter link.

I honestly didn't know who it was. I actually thought it was a guy who worked for Criterion lol.
