A very under-appreciated film that's for sure, though it is undoubtedly his most inaccessible work. Since the first time I saw it, I was mesmerized by it, a truly unshakable experience.

I still haven't watched my David Lynch Blu-ray collection yet.

I threw in Lost Highway a month ago or so. After about 5 minutes, I finally figured out that there was an English track that I could change - herp.

I had a bit of a headache and the intro with all of the lights didn't help so I turned it off

Some of those moments really got to me the first time even if I was a bit baffled. As a matter of fact, the atmosphere is as palpable as his best work due to the sound design and the harshness and intimacy of shooting on handheld.

It's definitely "advanced" level Lynch and one you only see after you've seen most of his work.

I've only seen my blu ray on a 16" screen with headphones, I need to check it out on my 55" TV. How bad does it look on a decent setup? I can't imagine it making the film look any better.

I personally think the first act ranks among Lynch's best work, the rest is effective and truly head scratching, but no where near as potent. It too was one of the Lynch films I didn't fall in love with at first, but damn did it ever get under my skin.

I always forget to turn on the English sdk until they speak, it totally ruins the atmosphere that was accruing up till that point.

You can get it for about a buck or so cheaper, if you're a B & N member. It's priced $44.99 in store. You can then use an $8 coupon (as it's $40 or more) to bring it down to $36.99. Then factor in the 10% membership discount and it's down to $33.30. That is how I bought my copy today.

.
Ranks *right* behind Mulholland Drive in Lynch's oeuvre for me. I see your point about the first act, but I don't think the film lets up at all even after that: there's just a deft change of mood as it transitions.

[An interesting observation: the latter part of Lost Highway strikes me in parts as a warped riff on Double Indemnity, much like Mulholland Drive sees Lynch filtering elements from Sunset Boulevard in its cocktail.]

I'm definitely going to rewatch it as I heard it was great.

On a side note, let the opening of the Criterions begin

Look at it this way...a rare opportunity to see a number of films you may have never seen for free. A way to expand your horizons and figure out which films are worth a second viewing. THAT is the very reason I justified spending $7.99 a month for a paid account. I streamed Narayama and then wound up buying it yesterday. You can also watch something today and wait to buy it, when it's a lot cheaper.

I thought it translated very well to home media, that is after viewing the German Concorde release on a 58" Panasonic Plasma.

I could not agree more with your sentiments regarding the effectiveness of the film's sound design and cinematography. For me, the most unforgettable sequences in Lynch's films are often defined by the juxtaposition between music and imagery.

From Amazon? I can't seem to find a better place to buy from--really wanted this one (Waterfront).

Default A good day!

I was able to purchase The Tree of Life today at Best Buy using their guaranteed price match with Amazon's latest low price.

It cost me a total of $10.66 (tax included.)

I still haven't seen it--and feel like I should sometime, but I'm really put off it by all of the arguments surrounding it from people who hate it/love it/love to argue about hating it

I watched Colombiana (I do watch popcorn flicks once in a while) a month ago, when I saw a similar bird cage with the same type of bird (finch). Definitely a homage to Le Samourai.
Thanks!

In all honesty... If you replace the bird cage with a 32'' LG LCD 1080p television and remove the cigarette smoke from the air, then the avatar looks just like me in my own apartment.

Speaking of avatars, I revisited Fellini's 8 1/2 the other night (and wrote a rather clumsy analysis). Such a great film that I want to pause at random spots to drink in the splendor of the still frames.

Wow! You need to watch it.

It's fantastic and there's so much room for interpretation. This is probably his most "out there" film, but I feel it's his most important to date.

Also, if you think the quality of The Thin Red Line, for example, is stunning - just wait until you see Tree Of Life!

The American, my favorite movie of 2010, is the best Melville film that Melville never directed.

The American takes elements from Melville's Le Samouraï, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and Léon Morin, Priest, then rolls them all into one great big ball of awesome.

Anton Corbijn, the director of The American, also made another recent film that I'm dying to see on Blu-ray someday, Control. Control is about the life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division who committed suicide in 1980 (and the film is largely based on Touching from a Distance, the book written by Ian Curtis's widow, Deborah Curtis).
Anton Corbijn has actually impacted my life in quite a few ways, since he is responsible for the cover art of U2's The Joshua Tree, as well as several videos by U2, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others.

I concur with everyone else that your "Criterion Haul" photo is pretty awesome. Some great finds there!
