The Rock is just as moronic (just smaller scaled).

As Armageddon? Absolutely not. The Rock is not art but it has Nic Cage and Sean Connery teaming up to kick ass. There's a certain poetry in that combination.

A Hitchcock Trilogy would be delicious....
Foreign Correspondent is known (as you say). Would not say 'no' to the others. Hopefully, CC, will also pursue the Hitchcock 9, esp. The Lodger.

It is a great combo. It's also Bay's funniest film (naked guitar playing Nicholas Csge gets me every time). I guess you've got a point Armageddon is billions of times more moronic (A Texas sized meteor vs. several missiles stationed at Alcatraz).

Being off work and crappy weather allowed me to have a mini Criterion film feat for myself today. Ended up watching:

Days of Heaven
Videodrome
Blow Out
Shallow Grave
39 Steps

Loved them all, seriously think Blow Out was my favorite ever so slightly.

Yeah, it's pretty great, isn't it?

That and Diabolique have made me very keen to see more Clouzot.

So I just pre-ordered/purchased Badlands, The Blob, Monsieur Verdoux and Le Circle Rouge.

All this Melville talk has me intrigued (I also have Army of Shadows on the way after Owls review).

I need to put the debit card down for a while.

I vaguely recall most of the British Hitchcocks being distributed by Janus back in the 1970s-80s, and a large majority of Criterion releases are Janus titles. I hope the new British restorations will look as good as THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and THE LADY VANISHES (haven't yet watched the Blu-ray edition of THE 39 STEPS, as I've seen it far more often).

While it's certainly interesting, I was never that crazy about SABOTAGE, whereas YOUNG AND INNOCENT is probably my favorite of all of Hitchock's British period, even more than THE 39 STEPS and THE LADY VANISHES (which tie for second place). Nova Pilbeam is a lot of fun and certainly grew up quite a bit in the three years since THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (I finally watched Criterion's new Blu of it tonight, and found better than I remembered, though Guillermo del Toro's discussion afterwards also helps appreciation and re-evaluation of it -- need to watch it again with the commentary soon).

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT is among the best of Hitchock's many great 1940s films. A Criterion Blu-ray box set of it with any other Hitchcock titles would obviously be an immediate must-buy!

Got my copy of On The Waterfront tonight. Can't wait to dig in in the next few days. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I love it.

I'm really hoping it's a good indicator that we'll get Criterion editions of It Happened One Night and From Here To Eternity.

Did anyone else find "Le Cercle Rouge" a little disappointing after seeing other Melville films? It just seems like a lesser version of Dassin's "Rififi" to me. It doesn't touch "Le Doulos", "Army of Shadows" or " Le Samourai". It lacks the emotional connection to the characters. I still have to see Bob le Flambuer. Un Flic, and "Le Deuxième Souffle" though.

I like Le Cercle Rouge and all the other Melville films I've seen, but I would say you are correct about LCR, it is a bit emotionally distant, though most Melville films are.

You HAVE to see Bob Le Flambeur which is my absolute favorite Melville. It has been a while since I saw it, but I remember it being much less chilly and with a great sense of fun yet still dramatic and exciting. Highly recommended.

I think the whole point of Le Cercle Rouge is that the protagonists are all shown emotionally distant and cold. They do not waste time with women, they do not ask questions, they do what is needed; they are professionals. Bob le flambeur is probably my favorite Melville as well, or Le deuxiemé souffle.

Re: Shallow Grave

That's too bad - it just builds and builds. Loved it.

Of the five listed, Videodrome disappointed me.
