I do not go as often these days, but I still enjoy it on occasion.

I live within walking distance of a theater that charges six dollars for pre-noon matinees, so I sometimes go to an early showing on Saturday or Sunday mornings after my training runs.

The last film that I saw was Django Unchained in late December, though. Nothing in 2013 has quickened my pulse, and, since the novelty of my Blu-ray player and HDTV still has not worn off, I'm happier at home watching movies.

RIP Alexei German

Quote:
In a 2012 article, critic Anton Dolin observed that "to many Russian critics, cinephiles, and viewers, German is their national cinema's foremost figure after (Andrei) Tarkovsky."

"Others insist that, in fact, he is more important and more original," Dolin wrote.

Three way tie: The Master/Once Upon a time in Anatolia/Zero Dark Thirty.

Next week my copy of Holy Motors comes in the mail

To swing it back to CC related dialogue, any chance a Leos Carax film will get a spine?

In contrast to films released in theaters last year, I believe last year was the best year for criterion blu ray releases so far.

What was everyone's favorite criterion release of 2012?

Probably my most disappointing film of last year, honestly...but I'd be interested in more, too.

I actually loved Prometheus.. I still remember how I felt when they landed on that big, desolate planet. Amazing

After several nights of watching Criterion movies, I am taking an off-night to watch one of my favorite films, The Shawshank Redemption, on Blu-ray for the first time.

I have loved The Shawshank Redemption since a friend and I saw it on opening night back in 1994. The theater was filled to just one-third capacity, and that's funny to imagine now. I've probably seen this film well over 100 times, and I love this sort of storytelling, where there is not a second wasted, despite the film's length.

I may be way off base here, but I could imagine Criterion releasing The Shawshank Redemption as a title in another decade or so in the same way that they occasionally pick up universally-acclaimed films like 12 Angry Men. This one has the pedigree, and its word-of-mouth gradual popularity makes for a great story in itself.

Letter Never Sent

This one makes a great double feature with The Grey.

EDIT: Might have to change my answer to The 39 Steps Blu-ray.

David Lean box set is great. It was awesome that Lawrence of Arabia (by Sony Pictures) was release on blu ray also in 2012.

Last year was very good.

Rosemary's Baby has been one of my favorite movies for decades and the BD looks and sounds fantastic so I gotta go with that.

The Lean/Coward set has been a pretty pleasant surprise though. I obviously expected the films to be good but to be honest I didn't really expect to like or enjoy them as much as I have (fyi to this point 'them' is still In Which We Serve and Brief Encounter).

Most of them were revisiting 2012 favorites I've seen 8 2013 releases (only two of them good)

Haha, yeah I typically don't go - even though there is one less than five minutes away from me

I agree. There isn't anything out that I have really been interested in. I wanted to go see Zero Dark Thirty, but I never got around to it. Plus it comes out on Blu-ray in another few weeks.

I actually sort of want to kind of see Safe Haven because I have a thing for Julianne Hough.

I usually just see limited-release films in theaters, so all my trips to the theater are in NY...so it's never just a quick trip like that even though I have one really nearby as well. Only nearby theater I went to for a film last year was Prometheus..which, as I mentioned last page...ehhh....

There were many great releases by criterion last year. It is very difficult for me to choose.

Three way tie (this is cheating, oh well):

Rashomon
Umberto D
David Lean box set

My ultimate favorite blu ray release (besides criterion) of 2012:

Lawrence of Arabia

One of the greatest scores and cinematography committed to film in surround sound and high definition was the best home theater film experience of last year.
