I have to watch this film now, especially after coop's and your comment. Does the blu ray have the original cut too?

For me, it was Harold and Maude ... simply because it was the first Criterion bluray I ever bought ... which got the ball rolling for more.

Skyfall was another top-notch offering from 2012, and it's really a much better film than we Bond fans had a right to expect. The Blu-ray is a gift from the heavens, in terms of picture quality, audio, and extras.

I prefer Casino Royale (2006), personally, and I was not initially thrilled at seeing Bond as a bodyguard in the new film, but Skyfall is, nonetheless, a masterwork in the franchise. It was my second favorite 2012 film behind The Grey.

Rosemary's Baby, closely followed by Weekend (Godard's).

Welcome to criterion addicts anonymous. There is no turning back, after your first one. Harold and Maude is great movie to start your collection.

Being a new criterion fan, be attentive of sales at B n N, criterion store and amazon.

You must have been looking in the wrong places, there were at least a dozen films that wowed all the way through.

Adding to previous discussion from that other thread, I liked it slightly more watching it on blu-ray last week (knowing what to expect), but I still found the lack of chemistry frustrating throughout.

Couldn't agree more... The A/V presentation is a true marvel which is among the finest I've seen.

I take back the part about no action when I'm sitting here online...because there's been plenty now

Thank you. I'm loving the experience so far. Since June, I've picked up a total of 25 Criterion blurays. I've watched maybe 11 of them. I try to hold off buying until the 50% off sales ... whether the sale is at B&N or Amazon or anyplace else. Like many in here, I'm anxiously awaiting the next sale.

I haven't been to the cinema in at least a month. But when I go, I always always see at least two movies. (on a good day, if I am early enough, I can do 4). It's too expensive to go not to get at least one more movie out of it.

On the question of 2012, best movies I saw at the cinema:
  • Killer Joe
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • Silver Linings
  • Honorable Mention: Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein

(but I still need to see Amour, The Master, and Holy Motors)

I find boxers to often be too bunchy and regular briefs to be lame.

The hybrid for the win!

The sales at BN unfortunately may not last much longer as stores having been closing very frequently.

I agree with you, retablo. The only wows I got last year were in revisiting classic films released in high definition, for example (my favorite frame still in my whole criterion collection):

I know other people my age that prefer them...so maybe it's an age thing (although I have no idea how old Octagon is...so that may mean nothing)

My unofficial goal this year has been to pick up 2 Criterions a month. I haven't bought any before now because I basically discovered the collection last year through checking out DVDs from my library (I have Stagecoach checked out right now).

In January, I bought a used copy of Godard's Contempt and Ang Lee's The Ice Storm.

I am about to order some movies, prob this weekend, for my Feb Criterion acquisitions. I am leaning towards Rosemary's Baby and either Last Days of Disco, Modern Times, The Red Shoes, or Breathless. All four are personal favorites, so I need them eventually.

But then again, I borrowed Fanny & Alexander from the library, watched the first episode, felt blown away by the beauty of it, and returned it with plans to get the BD.
