I already said before (was earlier in this thread) that I was planning on buying the whole Blu-ray collection because I got in on the beginning. But if criterion were to release a movie I've seen and dislike, I'm not going to buy it!.
I do a lot of research when I make my purchases...I have no need to be a completest especially if there are other genres and other things you end up spending money on.

Even with the Masters of Cinema titles, only a few that I want and not all. I think the only one that I will probably go all out and getting everything is the Paramount Centennial Collection (there are not that many and hopefully they release them on Blu-ray but it's Paramount's Criterion-like treatment for their classic films esp. for Audrey Hepburn fans).

It could be worse, I could like those hardcore "Hot Wheels", "Transformers" or "Star Wars" collectors. Those collectors are intense.

Definitely awesome! Look forward to your thoughts on "Lola Montes"...

I totally agree with you and I'm doing the same thing.

I agree. I'm now to the point where I'd rather buy one new Criterion Blu-Ray at $22-26 than almost any two non-Criterion releases with a combined cost about the same. Almost all the Blu-Ray Criterions I've bought have been blind buys and I don't regret any of them. Even the worst film I've bought on Criterion (Benjamin Button) is still a slightly above-average film in my opinion. And unlike films from other studios I never have to worry about poor quality releases when I buy a Criterion. They get it right the first time.

Some Criterion releases like Paris,Texas I'd never even heard of until learning about Criterion from this forum and are now among my favorite films of all-time.

That's arguable. It's not the best but it's SURE better than some of the other.

You mean Benjamin Button? I didn't mean the worst of ALL Criterion Blu-Ray releases, just the worst of the lot I currently own and have watched. I only have about a dozen Criterion Blu's so far so I cannot speak for the others I have yet to see. I'm sure there are some others not as good as than Benjamin Button.

Fair enough but BB is one of my favorite Criterions. It's a film I'll watch every year for sure.

I'm pretty much in the same boat but for instance, my library had The Vanishing on dvd. I only checked it out because it was a criterion disc (that and 95% of the movies are standard mainstream titles) I wasn't crazy about the movie at first. Then I kept thinking about it while watching the special features and I started to appreciate it more as it sunk in.

If someone wants to own every piece of media that criterion releases, that's cool by me. I just think its a bit lame that people get so emotionally attached to a brand that they feel it needs to conform to exactly how they see fit. I read somewhere that people were buying the MoC editions of For All Mankind and M even though they're region locked (they're going to buy or already have the criterion) in order to have the full collection. If someone wants to spend around $60 on filler for their dvd shelf, you must realize its going to look in the very least as... eccentric.

The "Days Of Heaven" blu-ray is scheduled for a March 23rd release. The DVD release came earlier and was not a re-release of a previous version for Criterion.

And I really need to check out Bicycle Thieves. I always hear great things about it and hopefully it gets released on bluray. And is Days of Heaven supposed to be out? I saw the dvd in Barnes and Noble. Is Days of Heaven a re-release? It had the same art as the bluray.
Monsoon Wedding is definitely worthwhile, a very good film; but what I appreciated even more is the short films that were included as well. The shorts are worth the price of admission themselves IMO.

hmmm the wife and I enjoy Monsoon Wedding, but I haven't checked out the shorts yet.... I will give them a view!

My wife is obsessed with non-bollywood Hindi films (if that's the correct terminology)

We watched "Water" last night, and I would recommend it...... pretty good film.

I didn't know that there was really such a thing as non-bollywood Hindi films... The best Hindi (er, maybe Tamil or Telungu) films I've seen are Gaijini (the Memento remake), Billu, and Lucky By Chance. Never heard of Water, I'll pick up next time I'm back in Chennai.

The two non-fiction shorts are best from Nair IMO.

You thought Gaijini was good? That was a pure ripoff of Memento. It basically makes it happy at the end. So effin ridiculous.

It's hard to find good Indian movies, most of the time they're ripoffs of other popular movies. Can you believe they remade Fight Club as a musical?

And I thought Dil Se was decent and I've always been curious about Lagaan

I love Lagaan! Would love to have that on BD! I also have Water, but have not made it past the first 30 minutes. I guess I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it.

I like watching foreign films, and enjoy Indian movies (nope, am not one), but have not really gotten into the whole Bollywood thing (although Lagaan had a healthy dose of song and dance!).

I'm waiting for Monsoon Wedding to go on sale.

Its one of the best looks at human emotion and its presented in such an honest way its hard not to like it. Its shot beautifully, the acting is believeable and the pathos displayed is second to none...

All why surprising me at the plot turns but remaining grounded in reality and never feeling forced.

I can;t say enough about how outstanding this movie is...

I did enjoy Gaijini, it was so surreal to see the change in mood and tone from the original. And the acting is leaps and bounds from your typical Indian fare. They can make ANY movie into a musical!

Default Hunger subtitles?

I posted this in the Hunger thread but didn't recieve a response from anyone, so I thought I'd try here. Does anyone else see a subtitles option on their version of Hunger? The reviewer noted that it was an option, but my disc doesn't appear to have it, do I have a defective disc? I'd be surprised if that was the case; seems more likely that maybe they had subtitles on the screener versions but dropped from the actual release.
