I just finished White and I too enjoyed this entry in the Three Colors Trilogy. I can't wait to watch Red now. I love Irene Jacob.

Are there supposed to be some underlying themes to these films? I feel like they are just simply about the lives of three individuals in France and their connections to a color of a stripe on the French flag.

Blue (representing liberty) shows how Julie had her own freedom to come and go as she pleased. She essentially started her life anew and met various walks of life. Both parties, as a result, had an impact on each other.

White (representing equality) shows how Karol was able to get revenge on his ex-wife after the hell she put him through. He was mistreated for being Polish and for (I believe) having trouble consummating his relationship with his wife.

The thing I like the most about these two films was how the main characters were able to see the bright side of life amidst all of the turmoil, tragedy, and heartache going on in their lives.

Certified Copy
Bellflower

Tyrannosaur
Melancholia
A Separation
Shame
Take Shelter
After that...I have to go look at my collection to remember what comes next
Great choices. Other than Bellflower, which I haven't seen, the rest sit in my top 20 for the year. How come you don't have The Tree of Life? Didn't enjoy it or haven't seen it?

Much like the Dekalog, the central idea is a mere jumping off point. It's not strictly about the "idea" but rather how complicated and tangled those values are in real life. What the film defines as "equality" isnt what Kirslowski would like to teach us in a didactic kind of way, but rather show how twisted and morally neutral that value is represented in (then)modern times.

I think Kieslowski is such a great moralist because he doesnt have the solution for life's problems. He accepts that "cures" dont exactly exist. He honestly conveyed one small thing and places us within the action which in turn puts us in an inquisitive state of mind. If the question isnt asked, how can it be answered?

Thanks

I forgot to include The Skin I Live in I don't know how I left out such a huge one..

I'd highly recommend Bellflower...I just re-watched it a few days ago and I just find it so much more brilliant than it's given credit for.

I haven't seen The Tree of Life. Like I mentioned before, I do plan on seeing it, but I'm a bit put off of it by all the incredibly divisive reactions. The thread for it is brimming with people who praise it and people who want to rip it apart. I should get around to it sometime, though.

On the subject...there's a bunch of films always listed as 2011 because of festival releases, that received theatrical releases in 2012, so I list them as 2012. My top few of 2012 are all in that position (like Breathing or Himizu--which didn't even get a US release---so I often find breaking them into a specific year difficult. The same with Certified Copy, I count it as 2011, even though it first came out in 2010.)

Also, there's other ones that most people saw in 2012 that I saw in 2011..which also makes me unsure of what they count as. I saw Beyond the Black Rainbow in 2011, but it got all of its theatrical releases in 2012, so I've been counting it as one or the other sometimes...so it would also be included on my favorites list above.

The Skin I Live in is another great one, but it always slips my mind. It's one of only two Almodovar films I've seen, something that I need to change as well.

I do the same thing with releases. I base it all on their North American release dates. There are a handful of films I saw at TIFF back in September that I left off my end of the year list for that reason.

If I could only have one more Criterion release ever...it would be a boxed set of his early films. Well, actually, if I'm dreaming up a set...it would be of all his films..but I'm not pushing it.

If you liked both of them, there's a good chance you will like the rest. I've seen all of his films and love every single one, they all work within a very similar style.

Hey all, just bought my first Criterion blu-ray (Kurosawa's Seven Samurai), and I've yet to watch it, but nice to see a thread for this. Hopefully it'll warm me up to getting more titles.
