Agreed. I showed my little sister the shooting scene in "The High Sign" and she just rolled her eyes and left, while I sat there chuckling modestly. I love the fact that silent cinema crafstmen had to overcome the barrier of being dialogue free. Many great films had to work around their limitations and have been all the better for it.

I guess I'll watch People On Sunday and The Phantom Carriage for silent films next. I still have The Gold Rush and The Great Dictator (not sure if they're silent or not, but a handful of Chaplin's films were silent).

I think I'll check out City Girl, Sunrise, and The Ultimate Buster Keaton Collection.

Halfway done with The Last Temptation Of Christ right now.

At first, I thought that I might detest the on-screen violence, but Rosi really gives you an understanding of this cultural bloodsport. His filming agenda of not using a script and creating the story as he filmed reminded me of Jean Vigo's L'Atalante. Filled with big chunks of "cinema verite," this film comes highly recommended.
Do you know how much of the violence was real?, because for the life of me I couldn't tell what was and what wasn't.

iScottie - I am glad you watched and enjoyed Three Colors. You should really check out some of the special features though. There are some real treasure spread out across those 3 discs.

I'd also consider hunting down the Miramax DVDs, if only for the Insdorf commentaries (and to see Bleu properly framed).

I'm browsing the Masters Of Cinema catalogue and I'm wondering how the following Region Free films are:
  • Le Silence De La Mer
  • Une Femme Mariee

Worth an import or no?

I can only imagine

I will need to check them out when I get some more down time. Right now, I'm just trying to work my way through the films

I created a thread in the German section posing that exact same question. I've been looking to add Faces & Shadows to my collection for quite some time now, and if the German release is in fact region free, I'd go with that set over the UK versions.

Yeah - especially because it appears that only Shadows and Faces are the region free titles in the UK.

I really didn't care for the film...I think it's mainly because of the subject matter, but I really wasn't interested.

This! I was hesitant at first because I was sure I'd react badly to it, but I ended up surprised at how much I enjoyed the film.

Whoa, according the their cart I can get that shipped to the US for $36.02 total.

That's awfully freaking tempting. My only reservation is not being sure whether supplements are English-friendly.

Still, thirty-six bucks...

Do we not think Criterion may offer an upgrade at some point?

...although that's a pretty good price..

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it is Region Free, but I would really like some confirmation

Oh i can hope...and yeah I'd support Criterion before importing, granted there's news about an upgrade floating around out there...I may bite on this for that price, though!

I don't even there's that much 'may' about it. It seems like one of those 'only a matter of time' things.

How much time is another matter entirely though.

Would you guys recommend importing Elephant Man, Twin Peaks, and Wild At Heart from Germany?

If having English text on packaging matters to you, I'd go with the UK versions of both Elephant Man & Wild at Heart. The German release of Fire Walk With Me is the only region free release available.

That's what I thought..it's why I've put off the DVD set. If it's out elsewhere, I'm sure we'll get it someday.
