I don't gravitate specifically to one nationality, but I tend to go towards French language films a lot. It's strange for me, since I took French for 12 years, with very little interest in it during my high school years, but now I love the language. Really wish I had appreciated it more when I was younger.

Anyway, it seems that the murder was the backdrop to the entire story. I'm curious, whose story do you find to be the real one?
I was going to caution against watching Rashomon as an intro because it was my first Kurosawa and I did not like it at all. Fortunately, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Seven Samurai are much better (in that order).

I found Rashomon really boring and although innovative at the time, I've seen the story structure so frequently that it wasn't enough to hold my interest. I'm glad you liked it though!!

I finally watched Blow-Up for the first time last night.

The linear, rational, straight-laced part of my brain that likes linear, rational, straight-forward storytelling should have been a lot more bothered some some of the odder non-sequiturs and by David Hemmings behavior but oddly enough it wasn't. It also sometimes seemed like it was trying a little too hard to be quirky but for some reason it all kind of worked.

I'm still not completely sure I would say I liked it but the time-capsule aspect alone was pretty interesting and some of the visuals (the park at night in particular) were very powerful. I would definitely give it another look if it got a decent BD release.

Interesting question. My wish list is pretty heavily weighted toward US films but I don't know if I have any real regional/national tendencies with regard to purchases. I might tend to view French/Japanese films as somehow safer or more familiar but I don't know about any other affinities.

Looking at it from the other direction, I might also be a little less willing to take chances on films from places like India or Iran that strike me as a little more alien.

Hmmmm...

Don't know if its been posted previously but TCM is showing the 217-minute director's cut of Cimino's Heaven's Gate next Sunday night at 9:00 pm PST. Should be of considerable interest to anyone (with a PVR) still sitting on the fence despite the very positive review here.

Thank you - yeah I was a little worried too, because I saw that style as well in numerous films, but I found it enjoyable

Does Criterion the have rights to Les Vampires? They're listed as having blu-ray rights on IMDB (not the end all I know but they're right some times).

It is. You have to enter the promo code word that is displayed on the link when you put the movie in the cart. (Not sure what the ethics are as far as posting the codes here on this site, otherwise I'd post the code word myself.)

Got it. Should I just wait for B & N sale since I'm a member? Won't On the Waterfront be cheaper?

$25 is a solid awesome price on this website with this sale, although a 50% off sale at B&N with additional 10% members discount may have a similar result.

I'm sitting this one out, since I promised myself that I would make Badlands my 200th Blu-ray, but it's a great sale.

The code word is FLASHY. Why shouldn't we post it? Criterion sent it out themselves this morning, and it's in BIG block letters on their homepage.

SALE ON!

I have On the Waterfront coming in from Amazon (using a gift card). My next must-have title is Badlands, which is a pre-order so it's not included.

Was thinking about picking up the remaining Bergmans and The Tin Drum, but I'll wait for the B&N sale when I can get them all cheaper.

BBS America is a steal at that price. Five Easy Pieces worth the price of admission alone.
