I'll assume that you're talking about "On The Waterfront"...wasn't sure, as you had quoted the post about Badlands.

For those that are B & N members that are interested in OTW...I don't know if it is still the same price, but it was $44.99 when I bought it. If you factor in the $8 members coup and your 10% members discount, it comes to $32.49 before tax. With NYS/Dutchess County tax, my bottom line was $35.13.

Now...back to my OCD. Amazon sent a replacement copy of Sansho, after my last bubblepacked copy came all dinged. Well...they still don't get it. They sent the replacement in a bubblepack as well. Fortunately this one came sans the dings. I guess the odds go in your favor from time to time.

Well, technically the conversation ("Ahhh.... Nevermind, then.") was about OTW. He just mentioned Badlands at the end of the last post.

Check out criterion.com and if you go through the films, it'll say whether it's out of print or not...there's quite a few. I'm not sure if there's a quick resource that lists all of them...there's quite a few. I do love going to used record stores with Criterion sections, and coming across hard-to-find movies in the Criterion collection

The 'My Criterion' Wish List feature is great for this purpose. No pressure when you are adding, and when a flash sale comes up, just go right down the line adding to cart.

That said, it would be nice if you could set an account preference with etailers where you get an "Are You Sure..." message whenever you put a SD-DVD in your cart.

This is the 17 I narrowed it down too with

400, Paris Texas, Kiss Me Deadly, Ivan's Childhood, Traffic, Night of Hunter as virtual locks. Need 6 more. Leaning to Rashomon as one as it would be my first non-Godzilla Japanese classic film.Read wiki to Umberto and I think id like it too.
Beyond your locks, I highly recommend Rashomon, Umberto D. and Rules of the Game.

8 1/2 and Army of Shadows as well, but they are not for everyone.

I agree about 8 1/2 (although I did like it) but I would actually argue that Rashomon is not for everyone either. Now, I haven't watched it on Blu-ray, just Hulu plus.

I just finished Black Narcissus. It was definitely one of the most unique films that I've seen and I feel that it was way ahead of its time. The transitions in particular really struck me as technologically advanced for the period. I can't believe it's a 1947 film. The film looks like it's a 1960s-1970s film. The Criterion Collection did a really great job with the restoration.

It wasn't my favorite film, but I was still very entertained for a little over 90 minutes. I think the most ironic thing about the entire film is that
[Show spoiler]the nuns set up the convent in the mountains to help the people, but it only ended up costing them because they lost their minds.

Also, in regards to the film, Jean Simmons is beautiful. Holy crap. Nose ring or not, she looked great!

I'm going to watch Design For Living in a little bit

Since you're definitely getting The 400 Blows, Ivan's Childhood, Kiss Me Deadly, Night Of The Hunter, Paris, Texas, and Traffic, I'm going to recommend the following six as well:

8 1/2
Army Of Shadows
Blow Out
Down By Law (my favorite one on the list - I was laughing so hard I was crying)
Rashomon
Videodrome

Didn't you say you were getting a replacement of A Night To Remember because they screwed up your order? I'm not sure why you have it listed if that's true.

I know what ones are OOP, but I thought you said the six or so that I pulled out to watch the next couple days were OOP.

Out of those you pulled out, I say Black Moon/Design for Living would be a better, more palatable double feature.

Black Narcissus would have been the 16th Criterion film on that top 15 I posted. It's very impressive just how ahead of its time it is, which I'm glad you picked up. The cinematography was easily the factor that bumped the film from 'good' to 'greatest ever' territory for me. The color, particularly, was a huge part of that. It effectively helped the transition to the much darker ending, by that style feeling much more at home with that type of film it eventually became..if that makes sense.

On your spoiler: that's part of what makes the story so interesting. Essentially, it's about the way each individual has their own view of what a perfect society is, that they'd like to make a reality...and how it's entirely impossible to do so.

Great analysis, Coop!

Did you find the color to be a bit annoying, though? What I mean is I kept seeing various colors every second of a scene. I eventually stopped seeing it because I got used to it, but when I paid attention it was very noticeable.

There is so much to admire about Black Narcissus. The stunning photography of Jack Cardiff who created even the most majestic shots of the Himalayas on an indoor set; the way Deborah Kerr is introduced - first from behind in a nun's robes and then, seconds later, in one of cinema's most beautiful closeups; the unseen and unspoken influence of erotica on the sisters that evoked repressed memories and lost love; and of course the shocking and tragic transformation of Sister Ruth. This is, I think, the greatest of the P & P oeuvre.
