It really makes me wonder if Criterion will release versions of Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom in the future. For obvious reasons, though, I don't think they have because they don't have the license.

I highly doubt it.

There's also Maitresse too, in a scene which might not even be the most disturbing in the film.

The Wes Anderson film that's hated the most, I feel, was probably my most favorite by him.

I'd rank them as the following:

The Darjeeling Limited
The Royal Tenenbaums
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
Moonrise Kingdom

I haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox or The Life Aquatic (although I own it).

Has Criterion ever released an animated movie? I'm too lazy to browse through the film catalogue, but I've never seen an animated movie in the Criterion queue.

(I figure that, if they haven't released the awesomeness that is The Secret of NIMH, then they probably won't release anything animated. I could be wrong, though.)

Barnes & Noble had Wings of Desire for 30% off (40% off for members) when I was there during lunch break today.

I did not buy it, but I really came close. I sold my DVD over the holidays in anticipation of buying the Blu-ray one day. Maybe during the next 50% off.

I believed I asked this question before, someone responded no. There are so many great animated and stop motion films that criterion can release, for example:

Stop-motion
The Brothers Quay films
Svankmajer films (Alice has been released by BFI, true surrealism)

Animated:
Fantastic Planet (any film by Rene Laloux)

Heh, yeah..I do dislike that one the most, actually...although I really don't like any of them... I used to have a friend who was a huge fan of them so after watching a few to give multiple chances, I gave up on trying to like any of them, but I do know plenty of people that are fans.

I'm probably one of the few who thought The Royal Tenenbaums was really disappointing. I didn't hate it, but it just left me cold. Bottle Rocket was okay but nothing to write home about.

My personal favorite is The Life Aquatic. It just hit me like BAM! - no idea why. Rushmore is on the 2nd place and Moonrise Kingdom third. Haven't seen Darjeeling yet.

I personally think that you have to be in the mood for watching an aimless film with no real point to it. They're simple comedies with nothing really deep to them lol.

I think Darjeeling was his most powerful film.

Ahhhh....back in the old days.

I've never seen that movie, despite all the acclaim over the decades.

I honestly do not watch animated films often at all, but I was just curious. The Secret of NIMH is the only animated film that I own on Blu-ray and that's mainly for the sake of childhood nostalgia. (Of course, it is the source of my forum name as well.) I have the massive Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volumes 1-6 box set on DVD, but it's too much of an undertaking ever to upgrade it to Blu-ray.

Blu-ray.com seems to think that animated films are underrepresented in my collection, and it ranks me as such, but I do not lend any sort of serious thought to that.

Is the BD of NIMH better than the DVD? I haven't picked up NIMH but debating on it... I suppose I mean extras/ supplements between BD and DVD

There is something iconic with the art design of Ronald Topor. I really hope there is a region A release of Fantastic Planet soon, really an under appreciated animated film here in the states.

Everything is the same as far as supplements go. The Blu-ray looks noticeably better than the DVD in some parts, but there are still a lot of scratches and such. I'm not holding my breath for a full-scale restoration of that particular movie, though, and I'm glad that it's simply a high definition presentation of the way that it's always looked instead of being toyed over by the digital elves.

This is what pushed me to go region free. Once I knew MoC had released it on blu...I was sold. And I bought it when it was still a single disc release and not a dual format.

I don't find Anderson's movies funny at all, not even by accident. It doesn't help that he keeps casting the awful Wilson brothers and Bill Murray.

The mannered, artificial mise en scene of his movies is more irritating for me though than the lack of humour, and Darjeeling Limited was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Yeah, I don't find them funny either...I actually have no idea what I'm supposed to find funny, even. I literally have no idea where the humor even is.

..you know, I only just realized they don't really put out many 'comedies'...they do so really very rarely.

I guess to each his own. I would say that Anderson is far from my favorite director, but I find most of his films charming and Fantastic Mr. Fox a stop motion work of art. There aren't many directors embracing stop motion, other than Tim Burton, Nick Park, or Henry Selick.
