Thanks. I've not seen Mrs. Brisby in ages I am getting this immediately.

I can't believe this came out a few months before I was born.

Zeitgeist Films is where I would point you to:

Kihachiro Kawamoto is someone I would recommend to any interested in stop motion puppet animation:

When I was in fourth grade, I read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

The Secret of NIMH came out in theaters the following year, with "Frisby" changed to "Brisby." I loved the movie and it goes without saying that The Great Owl made quite an impression on me.

There's more to the nickname, "The Great Owl", though.

A friend from high school and I were in the middle of a road trip several years ago, and we started talking about how fun it would be to create our own religion to see how many followers we could draw in. We jokingly decided that we were going to create a religion that worshiped The Great Owl and that we would spread the word about the wisdom of The Great Owl to the masses.
Even today, it's still an inside joke. We talked on the phone a few months back, and my friend said, "I'm glad that I did not spend $700,000 on a mortgage for a three-bedroom house in Atlanta back in 2004, like everyone was telling me to back then. The Great Owl told me that it was a bad idea."

I think Darjeeling was his most powerful film.
Agreed. Darjeeling is my favorite too. Love the cast, and the whole tempo and pace of the film too. Gorgeous production values and soundtrack.

Tho I would certainly not describe his films as "simple comedies, aimless and with no point." Maybe Bottle Rocket which I've only seen once, but easily my least favorite. The Life Aquatic being the only other one I dislike in his filmography.

Spidey...nice to see you!

My wife bought The Brothers Quay DVD set. A nice collection of stop motion films in some nice packaging.

The Kawamoto DVD sets look interesting. Any idea how much Zeitgeist is selling them for?

Why not? Animals get killed every day, what's the big deal if it's in a movie or not?

There's also tons of animals that die during filming (accidentally) too. The cat(s) from Milo and Otis drowned on set.

Men Behind the Sun had live rats set on fire (and probably a cat eaten alive although they denied this one was real)

Pink Flamingoes has a chicken killed

The Rules of the Game has rabbits getting shot

The Serpent's Egg they killed a horse

etc

I feel that way too---but only if it's not done JUST for the purpose of the film. Still, I don't want to see it so I'd rather it not be done, because..well...who DOES want to see it? I would hope the answer would be nobody.

I'm glad that show Luck got cancelled. They "accidentally" killed like several horses during filming.

Yup. Terrible, if you ask me.

On a side note, I watched The Gold Rush and I found it hilarious. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are definitely the original kings of comedy.

I'm all movied out now

rkish, do you recommend any region free player in particular.

I would also like to buy The Lost Weekend, Mizoguchi Collection and Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia (all region 2), which you probably have in your awesome blu ray collection.

Thank you for the information, Spiderbaby. I was aware of Brothers Quay collection and Svankmajer collection, but not Kawamoto's. I remember watching one of his films in the past. I have to check the rest of his films.

I am surprised that here in the US we have few stop-motion films on blu ray, especially with the success of Tim Burton produced films.

Svankmajer and the Quay Brothers are geniuses and very original. Their creativity is without boundaries.

No problem. I don't know exactly if Zeitgeist Films has or will re-release their previous releases on blu-ray, but these collections would be really great to do.

Thanks Fellini! I do have MoC's "The Lost Weekend" and the AE "Mizoguchi Collection" and they are both wonderful! I own the Momitsu 799 blu-ray player which is region free by punching in various codes using it's remote. I only use it for region B titles, so I never have to mess with changing the region setting. Unfortunately, they don't sell it anymore. I think I paid about $239 for it, when I bought it a few years ago.

I don't know how much money you want to spend, but I bought my Momitsu on EBay. Just put region free blu-ray player in the search and see what is available. The players that use remote codes are cheaper, but you have to watch out with installing any firmware updates, as these can sometimes disable the player's region free capabilities. If you buy one of these players, disable the network settings and/or any auto-update features.

There are also players that have hardware modifications to make them region free. Firmware updates will not affect the region free capabilities of that kind of player. These are also more expensive than remote code based players. The very best of these players are made by Oppo, but they are quite expensive.

Maybe some of the other posters that have bought players recently can give you feedback on models that they have had success with.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to complain about people who don't like seeing/knowing about animals dying in a movie.

I've only seen a few of his films and from what I can remember (this was awhile ago), they were nothing to write home about. I'm mainly annoyed that Criterion keeps releasing them on Blu-ray when there are more deserving directors whose catalogs deserve their treatment.

To the 3 or 4 of you that have mentioned it before/care about it.....

Tonight I watched Like Someone in Love and thought it was brilliant. I know a couple people here have seen it..so I'd love some other opinions on it...and I'd definitely like to know what others thought of the ending, which I'm still not sure I completely understood (still loved it though).

Wait until you watch Life Aquatic. You just might change your tune on both of these statements.
